2x jbl xtreme 2s in stereo and party mode - vs single xtreme

Two JBL Xtreme 2s in stereo and party mode compared to a single JBL Xtreme 2. It is great fun to be able to play these JBL Xtreme speakers separated out to give a wide stereo image. It adds a sension of dimension to the music. It is not all win win though. Watch my video to see how they stack up in party mode and stereo mode including sound test at maximum volume and half volume. The JBL Xtreme 2 bluetooth speaker offers good bass extension in a very portable form factor.

    Hi! I noticed that I lose the stereo connection in some point of listening the music. The mode goes back to party although I’ve set it in stereo. Then I go back to JBL connect app, it’s out of sync and cannot find the other speaker. I use iPhone with xtreme2s. This has been really frustrating since I bought 2nd one since the stereo mode was advertised and I wanted that to get a bit better stereo image. I’ve contacted JBL, they suggest to send both to service company... I believe this is a sw bug. Or does the stereo mode remain others thoughout the listening session?

    Alan thank you for this great review. I have an Extreme 2, which I bought in Canada for $250 new last NY's Eve, on sale and now they are $390. So not in a hurry for another BUT if they drop down to that $250 price I will snap one up given the "stereo presence" not the volume the other will provide. I have a question I bet you can answer. What happens if I leave the Unit plugged in and playing? I. Some folks say it is hard on the battery. Or is it just when you leave it plugged after it is fully charged. I was hoping it would act like the old AC Boom Boxes but don't want to shorten the life of the battery. Thanks again your knowledge and in depth look was appreciated!!

    Hi Alan. Your videos are awesome, and I can say your videos are the exact reason why I pursued JBL bluetooth speakers. Maybe you can answer this. I have had two Charge 4's for 5 months now. I use them in a decent sized room, on opposite sides of the room, in stereo mode using JBL Connect+. The quality is awesome. However, I wanted to see if I get it better (lol, never satisfied!). So I got an Xtreme 2. I entered it in the mix of the charge 4's. The Xtreme 2 sounds real good all by itself, but it makes everything sound "blah" when connected to the Charge 4 speakers. I think it's because I cannot set the Charge 4's to stereo mode when the xtreme 2 is in the mix. So.... the Charge 4s in Stereo has the true separation of left/right and the "fullness" is great. If I decide to get another xtreme 2, will it truly do the stereo thing between the two xtreme 2's utilizing connect+? If the answer is...both Xtreme 2's will each be in stereo, no left and right channel separation between the two like the Charge 4 will do. If the anwser is it won't do that ... then I'll be getting rid of xtreme 2.... Thank you for everything you do and for reading this!

  • @alanrossreviews

    @alanrossreviews

    3 жыл бұрын

    the thing to remember is party mode can be between multiple different model speakers. stereo only works for two same model speakers. so if you had the charge 4s in stereo then connected the x2 then all three will now be in party mode. if you get a second x2 and only connect those two x2 AND set them as stereo in the app then they will be in stereo.

    ha! that was my plan for my next video. i have just tried some quick frequency sweeps and there seems to be no difference. a tiny volume drop when connect is on but no change in the frequency response. @@alanrossreviews I found the answer. I was connecting two Xtreme 2's to the phone via Bluetooth. (I had to manually connect the second). So two Xtreme 2's showed up in my Phone Bluetooth connections. That was wrong! You only connect one speaker via Bluetooth. The second speaker gets its signal from the first, and the App determines the mode and, if Stereo, the channel of each speaker (when the connect button on the speakers is active/visible). That was not obvious in the docs (what little there were). Now I have a GOOD GOOD setup!! Two Xtreme 2's beat two Charges any day, and probably are better than a single JBL Boombox, especially for stereo!

    regarding the mains vs battery power on the extreme 2, i work in electronics and i think i know whats actually going on and why you dont hear a difference, i think the instantanious current draw on the battery is limited by software, what this means is that because watts is a product of voltage and amps, so higher volts less amps = same watts, so when the battery is full (higher voltage) the amp draw on the battery is lower so probably at anything less than full volume you will get the full output, the software is smart it reduces certain frequencys and moves the low bass response to keep the amp draw in check, its very subtle when the batteries are full, but as the battery runs down the amp draw increases and the software starts to limit bass frequency, because bass drops take a large amount of instantanious current its more noticable on heavy bass songs. i suspect its done to either protect the battery from over current, or to make sure the battery lasts the advertised time, i suspect this limiting will become more noticable as the battery ages and is throttled more often. also the frequency dip in party mode, probably phase cancellation from having 2 stereo speakers outputs intefearing with each other, rather than when you have a true left and right channel.

    Sounds like a glitch in the pairing app. I’ve had pairing Bluetooth speakers for at least five years now and never a problem. These are the only set I’ve needed to download an app to play together.

    @@loadedfun4764 well I did keep them and discovered it was my apple watch interfering , for no apparent reason (not paired to watch ) now I turn Bluetooth off on watch while listening , also I use an old apple device with the JBL app permanently open and in stereo mode (screen permanently on while speakers in use ) and this works , still a rediculous workaround but I like the sound 👍🏼

    The dip can change with volume, that is the famous bell curve of eq to save people's ears at higher volumes. Look up human hearing sensitivity and spl and see how they relate. 2.5khz-4khz is harsh and horrible if left untamed.

    I don't think it has anything to do with careful eqing by the jbl engineers but more an effect of the processing with connect. It is something that is consistent with all their speakers that I have. It is independent of volume, sound signature and speaker. It goes beyond taming a track and into clarity loss territory. Just my personal take on it.

    @@Joniyah444 ok, i personally preferred the original 1.2 but 1.6 and 1.9 took of the power limit 20w>30w on battery so if loudness was an issue its a decent fix and a bit more bass. I preferred the clarity and smoother sound at lower volumes with the 1.2.

    It's now 2023, I blew 400.00 on 2 extreme 2's ok? Seems pretty much everything the gentleman says is still true, but may I add more issues? I could not understand the instructions on how to add the second speaker to play in real stereo mode. I had to Google/KZread several posting's to get a clue. AFTER I finally got the units paired AND in stereo, I learned they do dumb things. First is terrible latency. Even when driving the master speaker with an analog patch cable from my computer sound card, there is a big delay when adjusting volume using the computers volume control (NOT the button on the speaker). That's not a problem, unless your watching a video through the JBL's, then it's crazy. Next, once the speakers are finally sync'd in stereo mode, if they shut off (or sleep), it's back to party mode! Stereo mode is NOT remembered! Must open the stupid Connect+ app and reset them! Yes, the other speaker wants nothing more that go to sleep asap! If there is silence (no music) for over 10 seconds, there is a 10 second delay before it plays again! Stupid. Even when on AC power, once it goes to sleep, you pretty much have to go through the whole proceedure to make them work in stereo again! It's just amazing JBL hasn't addressed this after all these years! They cheated on the lack of actual buttons to perform functions that you must use the app for. Big $, poor support. I spent over hrs. recently chatting online w/a JBL tech, anytime I mentioned these issues, he had no clue. What ever firmware MY units have, had addressed and shut off ability to allow full band of frequencies to pass to speakers. There is now a sharp cutoff of frequencies below 50Hz. No problem, cause the unit can't reproduce them anyway. They make up for it by designing a huge bump right at the 50Hz mark to fake you out for strong low bass! LOL. Once I use a software EQ to atten band from 60Hz and lower, the speakers sound more natural and allows the mid's and hi's to clear up a bit. BTW, yes, having 2 units operating in stereo with some distance between them on the floor, against a wall sounds pretty decent for their size, but can't touch any decent standard hi fi loudspeaker! Thx
