2x Broken SEGA MEGA DRIVE (Genesis) CLONES - Can I FIX Them???
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Here we have 2 portable Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) handheld gaming devices. One is my own and the other was purchased faulty from eBay. Can they both be fixed?
Merch is here!!!!! www.puddlt.com/my-mate-vince

Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

MEGA video, Vince! Those old PSP clones are still coming in handy... That has to be one of your best purchases, they just keep on giving!!! 👍

They really are, them and the Mega Joy 2000 have fixed the majority of my items🤣
I laughed out loud when the thing happened with the first one. Got Gameboy flashbacks, broke a few myself. Cracking video as always Vince 👍

Your videos are always a blessing to come home to. I even had my own mini fix today using an electric ratchet to replace my toilet seat. I recommend it 5 minute job. Thank you for keeping us entertained and helping us learn.
Excellent! Amazing discovery on that screen being the same one as used with that other MD portable!

Hahaha, oh no!!! You're in for a whole heap of pain with that lot of Diva's 🤣🤣🤣 Congrats though. They may need a healthy wack to get them started👍👍👍👍Cheers for letting me know.
you have come a very very long way sense the first videos i had seen you working on fixing things on . your getting to be a pro at fixing tech.
A big thanks to you Vince - your videos are fab. Just fixed my very first thing... a set of Bluetooth headphones... you’ve inspired me. Cheers 🍻
Great fixes. Those screens look good quality. Thank you also for the MMVFC plug. Got quite a few new members. The frog giveaway was on April 10th but we have more stuff in the works.
Very nice Vince, I enjoy your content. Just a suggestion, flux is your friend. A dab of flux will make your life easier and solder joints cleaner. The low melt alloy has no flux in it, and flux is mandatory for it to work properly.
Very great, amazing how do you fix all that stuff. And very amazing the ways you took to find the errors on all the stuff you fix. Thank you for all the videos.
That low melt solder looks the bees knees. Thanks for the tip on how to use it correctly.
Hi Vince, Glad you were able to get it working. I was hoping it was you who bought the item from my eBay listing, and that you would be able to get it fixed. I am glad I didnt try to repair it before selling as I would have made a real bugger of it I am sure. :) Cheers, and cracking video. Mike H.
My tip for low melt solder would be the Mechanic XW5 which has Bismuth in it to reduce the melting point It's melting point might be slightly higher than the chipquick, but it's still very low (140°C or less). You get a 40g roll for about 12€, which is like 1/5th of the price of ChipQuick.
Excellent video Vince! Cheap consoles but the fixes were entertaining
Nicely done as always 😁

hey sorry been away but watch 2 vids to try to catch up great vids as always
Great work vince, well done mate 👍💯
Great fix well done Vince
Nice fixes, really enjoyed it
Great video Vince thanks for sharing
They both work. Even if they are cheap clones they are not just landfill anymore.
Nice one, Vince!
Great video Vince. Sometimes it doesn't matter if they're cheap, it's fun to work on them. Keep it up bud 😁

Spot on! One less item in the landfill.
As always a fun and relaxing video
Fun fix as always.
A pleasure to watch you videos Vince. To avoid breaking the plastic pin from the switch, you have to push the exterior button on one side, then the switch to the same matching position an place the board in an incline position at an angle to join the 2 parts the press the board on the other side.
Awesome job! Vinces' skills have evolved over time, still need to get more Nintendo Switches though!
Nice video altrough these are cheap emulators it nice to see that you put care in them its also fun to see what different manufacturers do the first one had an actions risc chip and the second one had a globtop i expected them to both have globtops but no
Hi vince 🙋♂️. I'm really enjoying this one as I love repairs to do with megadrive lots. I'm just wondering do you remember the megadrive console lot you put on a video and you choose which one to fix using a horse racing game? Well I'm hoping you will get around to featuring the others in an upcoming video. Big fan and been watching for years. All the best to you vince 👍💯⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
11:45 i've been there (so did many of us here), don't worry... it wasn't the surpreme "hm, it doesn't look quite right, i'll fix it better!" break, so be glad it just gave up while you still had it disassembled :D
Nice one Vince
Oh Tony no! Don't use that low temp crap! Regular 60:40 and good Goot braid on each chip as you go! Also only use fresh braid - cut anything that has any slight bit of solder on it. You will notice the difference
Also you should make a console out of the broken unit... you could make a full sized joystick tv game. It would make an interesting project!
I should print you a case for the ones with broken screens and an adapter to use regular gamepads and turn them into mini consoles.
Sonic the Gopher, lmao!
Oh my God that radioshack armatron just sparked a memory I didn't know I had of having one of those. Not sure what exactly I was supposed to do with it, but I definitely owned one as a child.
Great video👍
It's great to see the Armatron pulling its weight around the house.
MMV on twitch when? Would be pretty fun watching you play old games
Nice job well done
Nice fix. 👍
good job mate.
32:35 the very last pin on the left of the display connector looks like it has a track break on the left track that goes off to the left and runs under the 2 of the marker 'C21'. bet that got jumped on the subsequent reflow?
About time you did consoles again haha
Great video, did you notice that the battery spring connector on positive I think it was (lcd connector side) wasn't soldered properly and it looks like the trace went to the lcd connector. When you used the hot air it re soldered again. wonder if it was that?
As if they weren't broken enough with the sound being fucked on those, it is AtGames after all.
28:00 - omg I haven't seen that Radio Shack Armatron in decades! Didn't know they sold them across the pond as well.
you should try low melt solder paste instead of these expensive low melt sodler wire, it is soooo nice to use. for example you like to solder a multi pin cpu chip like on used in a master system just pull a line of solder past over all contacts, melt it with 180°C hot air only and it will suck right on to the pads with the perfect amount of solder it is sooooo much easyier to use. also available as higher melt not only low melt version. i do not use anything else anymore.
Put flux on the solder wick. Works a treat.
Gotta say I like watching your videos. Sometimes you’re like a bull in a china shop when you handle these devices. But overall, nice job on your repairs.
I own the orange model. Fun toy back in the day. The only downside is no ability to save your progress in the game. Also the music for a lot of the games is way off. Mine still works after so many years.
Oh I hate when the bit you just put in breaks!... I normally end up melting the switch... so I brought 25! 😆
I have the 3 button version and mine doesn't have the weird extra 'positive spring' in the last slot. Mine is just your normal pos contact
AT Games should give you a sponsorship for this.
I'm guessing liquid spill. Sometimes you can get away with a wash, sometimes you need to RnR the part to wash under it, ala L Rossmann, so as to remove the slight continuity of the liquid residue between parts.
awesome 👍👍👍👍👍
Marvellous!
1st class video to watch thank you take care kind regards from me kenneth
I still have mine which came out in 2008 and it still works that being the 3 button one which has more games that being not mega drive games sadly
The lithium battery in mine has puffed up dead and i have no idea where to get a replacement of the same make/model?
Had that switch problem years ago with a DS could not get a switch so cut a needle to size heated up and pushed in switch part worked perfectly for years until ex gave it away
Ive a white version works great but no sound i do get slight buzz from speaker it also wont play through headphone socket
At first I honestly though the board thought it was in AV mode but it was a backlight fault
The Sega Genesis Ultimate Portable Game Player could have been a decent handheld if: -The menu graphics were stylized with Sega flair -Every ROM was playable with the option to switch between regions -SRAM and save states were supported -An extra speaker was built in for stereo output -A better rechargable battery was installed -A lanyard with a Sega logo was included * Sigh * Neto Bootloader and battery mods can only go so far. Is there anyone on the net who has actually managed to fix/update the Firecore emulator itself?
Holy Cowabunga I heard Nelson haw haw👊🏽🤠
i have a white one with blue buttons that the charge port was broken on. the guy who i got it from soldered a usb cable to the battery terminal. I tried to replace the charge port and the traces completly lifted off the board lol
i actually had one of the red ones and it came with the speaker wires hanging out
Dry solder joint vince
Personally I'd just use the atgames screen to fix that nomad clone, even though you got it working. The at@ames megadrive/genesis machines are not worth the plastic they're made of =/ Now, their ATARI handheld, that is a decent machine. Even includes all the difficulty switches and BW/Color. Most dont.
Did you find out why the O ohms resistor (fuse) was connected to ground?
5:30 is hurting me soo much, just use some fluuuuux and a solder wick!
Do you have any spare screens for those ?
37:00 just spent 2 mins wiping a hair from the left top of my screen 🙃
Have got a challenge to fix a graphic card.
Are all those tinny rectangle capacitors be put on the wrong way making the backlight now work u know the screen is good plugging it into the other game

Yes that's the same model as the playpal and the coleco Sonic. The screens are cheap and die. I've been looking for years for a replacement for mine

You can find replacements for the Orange one (the Mega Drive / Gopher) on AliExpress. Search for 2.8" 240x320 TFT LCD. No touch, no red board on the back (just display and flat cable)

I have the orange one it works but the battery is starting to swell and it is not the battery it claims to be on the label. The contacts are in a different place so you cannot just replace it :(. God knows what type of battery it is.
can u fix a broken screen of this device mine wont turn on its a black screen if u could post a tutorial of this it’d be great
OMG Lol! My pvp is red! And doesn’t read the cartridge! Needs a deep dive.
Can't you glue the white bit?
What's up Vince, what kind of screw driver do I need to open my ps4 so I can clean it? It's overheating

Security T9 for the PS4 if I remember correctly
Battery connector looks broken. So the battery possibly isnt even making contact there.
Just plug something on P2 audio jack output to test the sound!!! Hahahah. You unsoldered the other device to test. This give a lot of anxiety. Hahahah
👍👍
Ok, but can you fix the unbearable sound on these?
Can n beat bit of golden axe
Lol QC 17 wants sacking xD
Oh, wow, Altered Beast sounds horrible but that's AtGames' fault, not yours. Usually when people are demonstrating the poor music emulation on AtGames consoles, they either use Streets of Rage 2 or Sonic the Hedgehog. This is the first time I've heard Altered Beast's music twisted through the AtGames wringer and, yeah, it sounds way off even taking into account that I'm only hearing an audio recording of a tiny speaker. And that's a pity because I otherwise really like the design and the screen (well, I'd prefer the one with six buttons, but the North American version of the Sega Genesis Mini had the three button problem as well when the fighting games on it were designed for six buttons but at least you can buy a 6-button controller for the Mini).
Those At Games handhelds have a terrible reputation, bad emulation of the Mega Drive, sound especially.
You really have to start using flux when soldering/desoldering mate..
Hi
Never even heard of these weird Mega Drive handheld clones. Must have been a UK/European thing.

I have an AtGames Genesis handheld here in America.
Use flux when soldering
I actually have one of these
I'm going to guess that it is a backlight power issue.
2:07 you sound annoyed! 😳
what's the difference between one of these and a Game Gear?
@andrewsawesome
2 жыл бұрын
These are emulators whereas Game Gears are a real game console, however, Game Gears can't play Genesis games, only Master System Games. If you get the Sega Nomad, that's a real handheld console that can play Genesis games.

No, mate. You can't fix those things as they were broken before they left the factory.
When will you start using plastic tools where appropriate...
