2WD vs 4WD, Do You NEED 4WD/ AWD? | AnthonyJ350

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video we discuss if you NEED Four Wheel Drive/ 4WD or All Wheel Drive/ AWD. Having all wheels drive the vehicle is superior in low traction situations, but it might not be necessary. What you might want to focus on are tires, ground clearance and a traction device to help distribute power to the wheels that have traction.
We take our 2WD Chevy Silverado through a variety of environments to see how well it does.

Ground clearance, a good set of tires and maybe a locker make a huge difference in a 2wd vehicle's offroad performance. My first vehicle was a 2wd jeep cherokee xj, I put a 3 inch lift on, selectable rear locker and 31 x10.50 bfg mts and took that jeep places it never was meant to go. I have owned nothing but 4wd vehicles over the last 15 years but for all intents and purposes that jeep performed well enough for most hunting, camping, fishing, and light offroad situations.

@@privatezeron It's 2 years later but idc. The biggest challenge with 2wd offroad is getting flexy with less weight on one wheel, you'll just sit there and spin. An LSD will help with that a bit, but a locker (auto or selectable) is what you really want. Insure both wheels get power and there wont be much you can't do. Even with just my LSD right now, I've gotten my truck through some sketchy stuff. Mud, snow, ice, rocks, you name it. Momentum is key, especially without a locker. You'll use more skinny pedal offroading a 2wd, but it'll do most of what a 4x4 will.

I put a Lock-Right in my stock hight 2wd 93 Toyota on 195/75-14 snow tires and loved it! Best bang for the buck Offroad mod for a daily driver 2wd. It was quite capable. That being said, Offroading a 2wd is about tire placement, choosing your line, carrying momentum and knowing there are some places you're just not going to go. A lot of people might want a selectabl locker though.

The clutch differential is my fave. Aka posi-trac or just a posi. They need a friction modifier to help the clutches slip a little. The helical is also called a torque bias or thorsen style if memory serves. They use thorsen in awd instead of a transfer case. G80 isn’t made to take sudden hard stress like an old style posi. Tires make a huge difference too. Throw some aggressive mud grips and you hardly need 4wd unless you high center it. Thanks for posting!

Oh for sure, if I were to buy a new truck now I would get 4WD. Easy for me to afford now, but my truck still gets the job done and I save so much money if I keep running it. I would do a locker in the rear and a hellical LSD up front. I like having the front wheels being able to spin at different speeds. Again depends on the terrain you're going to be using the truck.

Thanks. This was better info, but does the Yukon LSD cause any kind of chirping or bucking driving on normal dry pavement. The ability for one wheel to spin at a different rate is really what all these diffs are about. I have a Rubicon JK with air lockers. It climbs chain-link fences with its 4:1 transfer case. However, any locking on dry pavement turns it into Mr. Toad's wild ride. Now I also have an older 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 with a LSD. It does great burnouts, but on wet payment, the hemi motor puts down too much power. With no weight in the rear, it slides big time. So much so, I can't pull out in front of anyone. The reason for all of this, I am having a new OLD 1974 Chevy K5 Blazer being delivered. It's retired, so no off-roading. However, we do live in wet Washington State and it does snow. The open diff it has now will not work 365-days a year, so I want a LSD that truly works without drivability issues during nice weather. The K5 makes a nice sound with the 383 stroker, but no racing. Just pleasure driving. The Yukon LSD is recommended, or do you have a better solution? Thank you!!

It was the saddest thing because I did the same thing with a 1998 Saturn SL1 sedan and I was fine. Stock tires. Brand new truck. In the dry you will be fine, but trucks RWD suck because there is no weight in the bed.

In my younger days I had 2WD pickups. Never again! In Alaska, 4WD/AWD is a no brainer. I have a 2019 Silverado 1500 and my wife has a 2018 Subaru Outback. Neither has a lift and none is needed for city driving and I don't off road my truck. The Outback has pretty decent clearance and can be used for mild off roading, although my wife will never let that happen to her baby. My truck is more used for towing our travel trailer. I took it to Arizona for the winter and at Quartzsite a few weeks overflow parking for the RV show was in Tyson Wash. I saw lots of FWD and 2WD vehicles stuck in the soft sand. With 4WD I was able to easily make it through the soft sand. For Arizona I have a 2015 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon that I take off road all the time. It's my play toy to go explore old trails. My 2016 Silverado 1500 is going to be moved down to Arizona this summer and I know the 4WD system will get a workout at times. Having a 4WD truck down there will give me the flexibility to go anywhere in the US during the winter months that I'm down there. Quite frankly, there is no room for a FWD or 2WD vehicle in my fleet.

Low range is also so you’re not putting too much stress on your diffs, gears, and Axels. When you’re I 4H you’re engine is working hard and not getting as much torque, causing it to bind up, which causes breakages (some of which are very expensive). You can go a lot of places with 2wd, but you’ll never get everywhere a 4wd will get. It just depends on what your needs are as a driver

What kind of tires are on the truck? One thing you can do is reduce the tire pressure up front to help the front end float on top. An Eaton True Trac or Yukon Gear Duragrip will really help (way cheaper than an ongoing truck payment). But if you're in muddy areas for work a lot and you're alone, 4WD might be a necessity.

50+ years of driving back country roads, many quite sketchy and ... No! You don't really need 4WD. Whether it was a 2WD or 4WD I always ordered my vehicles with a traction diff when available. 4WD's with traction diffs front and back. I found that the vehicles with 2WD & a traction diff were sufficiently capable except in the most extreme situations one should avoid. My Suburbans, 2WD or 4WD, with traction diffs were superior to pickups. You pay a big penalty with 4WD in fuel MPG and other wear. Another costly item that I too often had and little used except to pull other people out of a predicament was a winch. An interesting thing is that my old 1950 Chevy 1/2-ton with open diff was a traction monster on the farm or the beach or muddy back roads harvesting firewood or rock. Yes it had Compound Low and Town & Country's, but there must have been something about the differential design that must of contributed to its Goat like behavior. And my old VW's would go just about anywhere and the Baja's or Dunebuggies with the split emergency brakes were almost unstoppable. I found that with any vehicle a little application of the emergency brake would help engage differential action to the un-engaged dead wheel. Always wanted to split the emergency brakes on my and other rigs, but never did I just applied a little emergency brake and tried to remember it was on. In summation my 81' GMC 2500HD Crewcab 2WD with a traction diff went over 500,000 miles of muddy work from the Beaufort Sea to Belize through muddy jungle and deep snowy roads and fording rivers and never got stuck. That is a testament to 2WD and a traction diff.
