For Language Arts, my 2nd grader will be doing Reading Eggspress online as well as their Reading Eggs Book, Fix it Grammar, A Reason for Handwriting, and All About Spelling. For Math we are doing RightStart math and supplementing with Mathseeds workbook. For science we are doing A Reason For Science, The Good and the Beautiful Birds unit and Generation Genius online. For Social Studies we are doing My Story 2 from Masterbooks and Our 50 States from Notgrass. For Bible we are doing Word in Motion from Apolagia and Meeting with Jesus. We have been schooling with an Online public Charter School for 3 years so this will be our first year completely on our own! We are so ready!!!

Great choices! I am between Math u see or keep doing with TGTB Math which we still like. Can't decide.

Hard choice! We've never tried TGTB math, but I know people who use it and like it! If you are happy with what you're using, maybe that's best to stick with.

I'm using AOP Lifepac Language Arts with my grand daughter (6). We both really like it. Grade 1 went very well and we will start grade 2 in September. It helps a lot that she was an early reader (thanks to All About Reading) otherwise my job would would be much more challenging. For math, we use Math Mammoth. It's a very good program with a strong focus on mental math. I use Rocket Math for addition and subtraction drill ($5 a year).

So you’re using different curriculums, not just strictly The Good and the Beautiful? Would you recommend a secular program like Power Homeschool to go along with it? How would you grade your second grader?

We like to try different programs to see what's out there and what fits best! I've never heard of Power Homeschool actually - I'll have to look that one up! I'm not too worried about grades for my elementary-aged kids honestly. I know people have varying opinions on this 😄 If she struggles to complete assignments well (not because of distraction or attitude but truly bc of non-mastery of the subject matter), then we will slow down and work on that concept until she's mastered it and then move on. Testing isn't everyone's strong suit, so it's not always a great way to see how a child is truly understanding the concepts. Those are my 2 cents 🤷🏼‍♀️

Why didn't you go with RPC for him?

I didn't feel like his personality (or at least his current independent skills) was a good fit for watching a video lesson for reading/LA. I felt like he still needed me to go through the lessons with him and I like the content of TGTB!

Aiming to start homeschooling for the first time this coming June. He’s 5 but he’s doing 2nd grade work (he’s in an advanced program in a private school). Would you invest in a 2nd grade curriculum different from the ones he’s doing now (they use abeka) or invest in a 3rd grade one to get more use of it? Also, is there such thing as looking at the curriculums before purchasing? love your content!

WOW!!! That's incredible!! There are a lot of "flip through" videos of different curriculums on KZread that could help you get a feel for how well it would suit him before purchasing. The Good and the Beautiful offers their language arts courses as free pdf downloads! Homeschool conventions will have curriculum reps there with books you can leaf through! Has he been doing 2nd grade work this whole year?
