#29 How to make an inside out turned Christmas ornament | Create 2 make
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Merry Christmas to you all, this is the inside out Christmas ornament I made for the competition, unfortunately things happen and I missed the deadline. I still thought it was something I was proud of. So thanks to Carl Jacobson and Alan Stratton for the inspiration.

Hello Create 2 make. It's been a while since 2017, but I've only just seen your video. Here's a tip from me for gluing pieces of wood that you want to detach later, like in the first step of In and out turning: Use the paper-gluing method, between the two pieces of wood to be glued put a layer of paper, possibly newspaper, with wood glue. So wood, glue, paper, glue, and the second piece of wood on top. This can be easily removed later, better than pure hot glue. Otherwise a great video, thanks for the work. Greetings from northern Germany, stay healthy. George

Paul, this Awesome piece should be displayed more often than just at Christmas time. FYI: Please get, make a table saw push stick that does more than just than just push. It's best to have a longer one that provides more down force on the material as it pushes past the blade. My latest video shows my Mishap where I used my left hand as a pull stick, because my push stick only Pushed, BAD idea!

Thanks I was really pleased with it, I will take your advice on the push stick and make a better one
This video would be a lot better if there was a narrative to go along with the video. Would like to know what the measurements of the boards were when he glued them up

Thanks for the feedback, I understand that my style of video making 6 years ago was not the best. I will take it on board the next time I do a video like this again.
Nice piece. I think you definitely need to have a look at the headstock on your lathe, and tighten up on the other side of the shaft, as there’s no way you should have that much lateral movement.

Thanks, I have replaced the bearings since and the issue has gone away. Thanks for watching
Enjoyed the video but I agree with Laurie you seem to have some serious end float in your headstock bearings.

Thanks James, the lathe has been repaired since the video. Thanks for watching.
That is a gorgeous ornament. I've been wondering how to make one like that. I could swear I saw some wobble in your lathe though..might want to get that fixed before you have serious trouble.

Thank you for your feedback, I am glad you liked it. I hope you will give it a go, just take care when sanding. The lathe has been repaired since then, so it's all good now.

Why is that chuck floating like that? Looks dangerous to me... Awesome job on the ornament..

There was an issue at the time where the pulley had moved on the shaft. It's been sorted shortly after doing the ornament. Thanks for your feedback I appreciate it. Thanks for watching
I see your chuck wanders too, I have the same lathe, the little grub screw collar behind the belt pulley needs a shim behind it. Great work there though. Inspirering

What kind of glue did you use to glue pieces together.
@Create2make
3 жыл бұрын
I used normal pva wood glue. It held very well a it was a long grain joint on all sides.
Красивая ,сложная работа!!Но применение я ей не вижу.Может только на елку
Looks nice! What finish did you use?

@@Create2make Thanks for answering! The color looks really nice. Is it amber shellac? Did you mix it with oil or anything else? I tried clear shellac with linseed oil, but it's just slightly yellowish and doesn't have the richness like on your video, so I'm really curious how you got it so nice.
@Create2make
4 жыл бұрын
It was amber shellac, it was already mixed and that was the first time I had used it. It does make the wood pop really great
Have to say this is a beautiful piece, much nicer than mine although I've only been turning since March 1, 2019. My first video is an inside out ornament. Please check it out, I'd appreciate your feedback.

There is a trick to unglue hot glue aht you need to google to learn. On your finials, unless youturn them with a fingernail ground detail gouge you will not get a crisp transition. I noticed that carbide tool is all you use besides your spindle roughing gouge. I noticed that you are using the skew chisel on its side which is not recommended. that's why you are hving trouble to roll your beads. Watch Alen Batty's video as how to use skew chisel. Once you you get ahng of it then you can roll beads and using the detail gouge will allow you to have a sharp transition on the coves. Your work came out Ok, but its too big to be hanging from the tree and it is not proportionate with the body of the ornament. Hope you take this as a suggestion and not insult. From one turner to anther. Best of luck in turning.
