I first got the .270 from my Dad's 1969 Browning BAR. It didn't 'Thump' as hard as the 30'06, so I didn't 'Flinch' due to the heavier recoil... Semper Fidelis

Alaska on that 243 Winchester Barnes ttsx 80gr and IMR4064 39.5gr load. As I mentioned, I used the Lee collet neck die. I failed to tell you I did the second ¼ turn size on the brass that Lee mentions in his instructions. The .4 group could be much better I think. As I was shooting from a backpack on a picnic table. Temperatures here are rising towards 90's at times so soon as I get time i will be testing 40gr. IMR4064. There is a lot of argument about neck sizing, but from my experience it makes a difference. I think it helps your velocity stay more consistent while saving your brass some working. Just my own experience, but it is hands on and not just repeating someone else's thoughts. Which as you know is a plague on YT. Great job! Keep'em coming!

If you have a bore scope, I would recommend looking down the barrel and see what the shape of the bore is like. It may just need a really good cleaning or could possibly need to fire lap the barrel if you have tool marks left in the barrel. If you think you need to fire lap the barrel, I recommend cleaning the bore really well with a good copper killer and then bore cleaner. Fire lapping works really well on a bore that needs machining marks smoothed out but if the bore has copper in it, the fire lapping may not help that much just from my experience.

Glass bedding my Tikka really helped with going from 1in down to consistent .3/4 .5 groups. Also my Tikka .270 really responded well with seating depth test get a good consistent velocity charge don't worry about group size load to max mag length then after you have a good consistent velocity powder charge load a bunch of ammo with that charge and more it back 5 thousandths at time untill you see it shrink up your adjusting the harmonics by adjusting the seating depth

In my opinion the Nosler partition is still the perfect medium- large game bullet when used with a medium to large cartridge with sufficient horse power for the job. The focus on new ammo has been weight retention no matter the cost to its ability to stop the animal quickly. I don't agree with this at all. I prefer a bullet that loses 15-30% over the 1st 6-10'' of penetration followed by continued expansion, penetration and a large hole on the far side of the animal. In my experience this is what kills quickly. The Nosler partition bullets in proper loadings excel at this. In my experience using cartridges such as the 270, 7mm-08, 280 Remington, 7mm Rem Mag, 308, 30-06 and 300 Win Mag small - large white tail deer drop much more quickly than bullets that do not shed some weight. I would much rather lose a little more meat than track an animal longer knowing it is suffering that whole time. If we use average deer rifle cartridges with Nosler partition bullets at average ranges of 50-250 yards the penetration I've seen is always 100% Bullets of proper weight with this bullet design have no problem completely penetrating a 100-250lb animal even when raking shots require 20+'' of penetration. Sure bonded bullets and all copper bullets penetrate deeply and this is necessary depending on the cartridge chosen for the game at hand but most often when a proper cartridge is selected a Nosler partition will stop the animal more quickly. In my opinion marginal cartridges is where bonded bullets and all copper bullets really begin to overtake the Nosler partition. When a smaller cartridge such as a 243 is chosen and the shots taken may involve a long raking shot where 20+'' of muscle and bone must be penetrated then we need to retain as much weight as possible and sacrifice some damage to assure the bullet penetrates deep enough to be effective. However, stepping up to a larger cartridge and shooting a Nosler partition still provides a faster kill

270 hand loading Over the past 30 years I've used 4350 and RL 22 for 130gr Nosler partition and ballistic tip using different primers, and casings to reach the best sub MOA grouping out of my 2 Winchester 22 inch barrel featherweight rifles. Both rifles have been tuned up by gunsmith legions. I ended up with using 60 gr RL22 with Winchester primer and Winchester casing. Across the chronometer at 10 yards I'm getting an average of 3210 FPS. Yes I just noticed the current Nosler loading data is showing 58 gr of RL 22 is max, but my reloading manual from the early 90's showed the max of 60. I am able to use the same casing over and over, and I've never seen any signs of pressure issues. It should be noted that with the 150gr partition I found the CCI bench rest primer, gave me the best MOA grouping and while I have not loaded the new 140 gr I suspect it may be the same.

IME they shoot as well, or better than any other bullet, and my experience covers a LOT of CF rifle calibers.Maybe early on the partition was not that accurate due to how it was made and the equipment they had at that time to make them, but today........they shoot great and have for the last 40 years at least.

I haven't bought a Howa yet that couldn't shoot into half inch at 100 yards as well as my Weatherby Vanguards using factory ammunition. My experience using both has proven to me that these rifles require a minimum of 40 rounds to smooth the bore and fill in the imperfections with copper before they settle into tack driving mode. I always keep my rifles thoroughly clean after every trip to the ŕange and that's what it is.

Try the Speer Grand Slam or Mag Tip bullets if you can get some. The blunt profile puts the driving band/ shank closer to the lands than pointier bullets. I had a a 7x64 Brenneke years ago that would put everything into 1.5 MOA except those Speer bullets (160gn). Those went into 0.7 MOA. The 7x64 has a very long throat, and getting great accuracy can be a challenge if you want to load to magazine length. I suspect the same thing is happening here. Just to confound the issue, my Tikka Forest .270 shoots cheap and cheerful Federal 130 gn PowerShok into 1.5" groups at 200 yards. I have yet to try handloads in it. I think we all owe a debt to John Nosler. He started the quest for better performance, and raised the bar for other companies, leading to a market full of good bullets. A veritable embarassment of riches. Just a thought, but what about 4350? Not sure if Varget or 4064 would be a little too fast. Don't have a burn rate chart handy. And of course there are the newer Enduron powders. I hear good things. I am sure with just a little experimentation you will find a great load with that and other bullets. Keep up the good work.

Hey Chuck, the expansion and weight retention you obtained are very good. One of my experiences with the Nosler reloading book, several years ago has been similar to yours, I tried to get the advertised velocity of a 150 grains 7 mm mag with a maximum book charge of 63 grains of IMR 4350 (supposedly 3243 fps) in a 24 inch barreled Sako that was almost new. The accuracy was phenomenal both with the Partition and the Ballistic tip but the speeds averaged 3055 fps... I've used Nosler bullets extensively and have usually come very close or exceeded their book's speeds. A longer barrel as you mention may make a substantial difference.

I have a Tikka T3 .243 stainless w laminated stock and the groups will open up after 3 shots. But that 1st cold barrell shot goes right where I aim. Hunting coyotes last winter in 10° to 40°f temps I'm 5 for 6 at 400-600 yards and the one I missed was my fault. Under 400yds I havent missed in over 2 years. When sighting it in I shoot 3, pull bolt out and let it cool down completely and repeat, that 1st shot is the most important. She is a cold barrel hunter not a bench rifle that needs a warm up shot. Btw I use Hornady superformance varmint 58g @3924 fps according to the box. Mean little pills!

Make sure she cycles and at that point start taking your rifles OAL down in .003 for say 5 groups of 3 rounds. The paper will tell you where your sweet spot is. Yeah, that's a little bit slow. But for some uses not really a problem. I've toyed with the idea of turning a .270 into a 7mm-08 by loading down deliberately. Under timber conditions for deer, a .270 running full throttle isn't as appropriate as several milder rounds in the 7mm-08 category.

Hey chuck so I don’t know if you remember or not but I commented on this bullet and how I got some 150s for my 270. Well I tested the bullet I don’t have a chronograph so I couldn’t test velocity but my buddy loaded them with 55gr h4831sc. The book said i should’ve gotten 2900 but I think the velocity is more around the neighborhood of 2770 and 2800. Anyway my bullet went through 5 jugs punched a hole in 6th and fell to the ground. I just used that load on a bull moose a few days ago bullet went 3.5 feet into lungs muscle and bone stopped in other side rib. My shot was in an angle behind his right shoulder so bullet travelled towards his neck and stopped in the rib meat. If you ask me that’s great performance on large game. We really do expect .270 to be pushing magnum speeds as a matter of its reputation. Is that totally fair or putting it to best use? I know of the deer I've killed with Hornady 140s it was a bit rough on the carcass with quartering shots. I could have used less speed and a bit tougher bullet under those conditions. Maybe those old slow round nose deer loads they once offered did make sense. They were not well received and dropped after a few years reportedly.

IMR 4831 has a slower burn rate than IMR 4350. IMR 4831 works beautifully in the medium type magnums (7mm Rem mag, 300 Win mag, .338 Wim mag) with heavier bullets. In a .270, a 24 in. barrel and a 140 gr. bullet, IMR 4350 (I think) will be better. I use IMR 4831 in my .300 win mag using 180 gr. bullets and it's a tack driver at a full 3000 fps. Now, if you had a .270 Win with a 26 in. barrel (yes they exist) and went with a 150 gr. bullet, IMR 4831 would be the cat's pajamas. So would RL-26. You'll need over 60 gr. of RL-26 but it will push a 150 gr. bullet at just over 3000 fps. That's magnum territory from a standard sized cartridge.

If the 270 has a long throat, like in the Tikkas, H4831 will give you a tad bit more velocity than H4350, but at the expense of like 10% more powder. But, I’ve always gotten better SD’s with 4831SC. Not experienced with R17, because it’s not temperature stable, and I live in the heat lol.

I'm a crappy shot so at the 40 yards I shoot at, I think that velocity and accuracy are fine.

The accuracy issues is because your not in the accuracy node for 140gr pills. Look for 2950 to 3050 velocity. You will find accuracy there. Do a proper load dev. Book maxes have been dropping like crazy over the years. 60+gr of H4895 would be the place to be. Maybe start at 59gr and go right up to 62gr.
