26 Vermeer

This lecture concludes the treatment of the Dutch Republic by turning to genre scene and landscape artists. With the Treaty of Munster of 1648, Dutch collectors turned from themes of war to domesticity. Thus genre scenes of the virtues of women in domestic interiors became popular. Artists like Terborch and Vermeer would popularize these themes in varying subliminal and ambiguous treatments. Ruisdael would be the most popular landscape painter in the north and create baroque landscapes akin to Rubens.
