It was a callback to Jon Pertwee’s debut story Spearhead from Space, aired over four weeks in 1970. But with roughly double the run time of Rose it had far more time to develop the creepy concept of the alien Nestene consciousness with an affinity for plastic. In Rose it was treated as a returning monster and the exposition was much more rushed, played for laughs a lot of the time and then replaying iconic scenes of Autons (shop window dummies) killing shoppers that many viewers were too young to have seen The character building with Eccleston was great, but the rather brilliant classic monsters felt shortchanged in a squandered opportunity. If they’d been saved for a later episode when the lead characters were established I think the Autons would have been better served and made a much better impression. Plastic death traps has so much potential, but infamous sequences like Mickey getting swallowed by a badly CGIed burping wheelie bin turned them into a joke. I hope they get another chance to redeem themselves as a major villain one day

I've heard exactly this on the VHS dad recorded it on, about as many times as the average person wonders if we're alone in the universe per calendar month listening to the announcer unlocks the memory of the smell of warm plastic, the off-brand cardboard sleeve and the 'ka-clunk-click' of the player recieving a tape. Of all the homerecorded sit-coms and movies, Dr Who 05 Ser. 1 was the most pristine, and most loved. I was 10 and it was imagination meth. I even submitted an alien to the blue-peter challenge the following year. A year was such a long time back then. It was a kind of couch-sized maggot with 3 rows of teeth and non-newtonian skin that strengthened the harder you hit it, called a Grul, for all of you wondering x

Younger Who fans won’t remember how we sat before our TVs back in 2005 and watched this for the very first time not knowing what it was, perhaps your parents had watched and grown up with Classic Who, and decided to get you into it through the revived series. Little did I know how much it would engross and captivate my 6 year old mind at the time. A trip of a lifetime I’d kill to experience again.

Little did we know that eleven series later, it would all fall apart and become a shadow of its former self. The show, my all-time favourite, is utterly abysmal now and I am/was an avid viewer since Jon Pertwee's last series. I'd kill to have *DOCTOR WHO* back again, not this 'doctor who' in name only.

They used to show repeats of the old Who on BBC 1 during Saturday afternoons around 2002-2004. That's how I first got into the show as a 12 year old, so I kind of knew what to expect, but it was still incredibly exciting.

the first thing all fans did, in unison, was exclaim NO FACE! Every Doctor from the second to the seventh got at least one distinct title sequence and it always included his face. Instead we got the actor’s name credit instead. This was all in keeping with the Mcgann TV movie made by Fox, but somehow it felt more surprising when a BBC series headed by a self proclaimed fan made such a big break with tradition

Reaction to Rose in 2005 : Delighted by titles. Surprisingly impressed by Piper. Envious for the Classic series of the budget. Pleased by return of the Autons - but preferring the Pertwee stories. 45 minutes running time means first of many rushed endings. Verdict - cautiously hopeful for series (and increasingly impressed as series 1 progressed)

I remember this day. I remember, at 17, being fascinated by this popular TV figure from the past. Especially having watched the Paul McGann version nearly 10 years before, and having played "The Doctor" in an amateur dramatics musical where he happens to drop in. I remember being dressed in a colourful scarf, hat and long coat... I think I was 13? And offering a jelly baby, and saying these lines in a posh voice and everyone laughing at in-jokes I didn't yet get because I hadn't grown up with it. Y'know, people say representation in the media doesn't matter. But I'm pretty sure I kept watching it each week BECAUSE Eccleston was northern. It delighted me to see "other planets have a north". And delighted me even more, after reading Eccleston's autobiography, that he also enjoyed that subversion of stereotypical hero.

I don't mind classic Doctor Who but I have to say bringing it back to tv in the new millennium is a big mistake, especially for a Saturday night schedule on BBC One. It ruined the fantastic high quality Saturday night schedule of just gameshows such as Jim Davidson's Generation Game, Whatever You Want, Big Break Friends Like These, Dog Eat Dog, The National Lottery Stars, JetSet and Winning Lines, Casualty and Parkinson, only to be replaced by this and another crap show Strictly Come Dancing. It's all thanks to Lorraine Heggessey who ruined saturday nights on BBC One and she will never be forgiven for. Doctor Who should've moved to BBC Two and if I was to become controller of BBC One in the future, my first priority would be to axe this, and Strictly Come Dancing and Michael Mcintyre's big show and replace it with gameshows similar to 2001 and bring back The National Lottery. I would also axe The Graham Norton Show and bring children's programmes back to BBC One where they belong.
