26 Film & TV with Gender-Queer Lesbians

Ойын-сауық

Feminine lesbians get most of the rep, so I put together a list of sapphics who deviate from the traditional feminine norm - call it sporty, boyish, masc, butch, stud, androgynous or gender-queer. Let me know the ones I missed in the comments!

I would love to see you do a separate review of "Blue Jean." All-lesbian creative team, diverse representation, intense relationship scenes, stellar acting, winner of multiple British Indie Film Awards. Political backdrop similar to what is happening in the US today where "Don't Say Gay" bills are being passed. Very powerful drama, now streaming.

Black masculine presenting women have long referred to themselves as ‘Studs’ Although, I believe some younger black gen z lesbians/queers also use the term ‘masc’ as well. Just something I thought of with the Pariah clip & seeing Rose Rollins ‘Tasha’ in the background in your L word Shane clips

The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love was the first sapphic flick I ever rented from the video rental store and I remember being terrified that someone in my town would know I rented it and out me. Fun times! Seeing LH later on in The L Word (and even later on in L Word: Gen Q) was definitely a punch in the feels. Love this list!

I like in Princess Cyd when she's being disrespectful and her aunt politely tells her off. Very satisfying seeing someone get put in their place with intellect and restraint over insults and arguing. The movie's worth watching for that scene alone.

Thanks for including some of the older ones. Have you seen Treading Water (not the swimming one)? One of the main characters has a more masc vibe and it has that indie early 2000s feel.

Same. Watching it felt like willingly subjecting myself to a hate crime. We really need to reckon with the idea that that show was just… bad. I get that it was revolutionary for its time, but…

Excellent video, as always! As to your comment on Anne Lister not having access to performing tasks such as conducting a business because of her being a woman, I just want to add that it's not because she was lived in "the past" in general; rather, it's because she lived in one specific past, the 19th century, in a Victorian England which, as you well know, was a very repressive period of history for women. At other periods, women were much more socially free and mobile-in the Middle Ages, for instance, women could and did run businesses, particularly due to the fact that so many men were constantly waging war. I realise that in such a short vid with a lot of very precious information, you could hardly go into too many details, and I'm not in the least blaming you. I just thought it would be interesting to suggest a more nuanced view of "the past". And again, I'm not trying to say that women were ever equal to men and weren't oppressed or hampered by society-absolutely not. Keep up the good work, Shipper! I love your vids and your clear, honest, well-informed comments, delivered with class and good humor 💋

Thanks for your comment. Very true, things have not been linear. I don't know too much about the middle ages, so interesting to hear that women had more freedom! Another factor would be that it would vary so much from country to country too. I'm glad you enjoy my vids, thanks for watching!

This is an excellent look at diverse representation. I only cringed a bit at the use of "masculine" in tandem with characteristics like "confidence" (related to Shane) or "body-building physique and tattoos" (the character in "Four More Shots Please"). I know that confidence, strength, athleticism, the ability to use tools, disdain for traditional feminine clothes, short or unruly hair, etc. have long been lesbian signifiers (and honorable ones), but why are these values and choices still perceived as inherently "masculine"? For all the talk of gender and breaking binaries, we continue to reinforce them in a sexist way. This is not meant to diss 100% Shipper, whose content is outstanding, or anyone's self-identity as masc lesbians or whatever anyone was, is or hopes to be. Love to all.

So what really are masc lesbians then? Just a question coming from a decidedly sapphic person who is always confused at all the new terms arising.

Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it. I tried my best to be respectful but struggled with how to frame things, I guess because there is a dominant binary bias that codifies activities, presentation etc into masculine and feminine that I am most certainly not immune to and a lack of vocabulary and knowledge to frame it better. I appreciate the perspective though and fully agree. I'll keep it in mind for next time!
