25th August 2022 - Sussex Storm

Ойын-сауық

A hot humid plume of air from the Continent (bringing temperatures in the high twenties on the 24th August) destabilises to produce thunderstorms early hours of the morning. Some uncertainty existed as to where the storms would hit and so I had originally travelled into Kent but was then drawn to head westwards as storms moving over the Channel seemed likely to hit the East Sussex coastline.

Three of the most violent, aggressive thunderstorms we experienced in the 80s and lasted all night were August 82 late August 85 and March 88. Not to mention summer 83 which was the worst ever.

I was born before all of them but a bit young to remember. I do remember some huge storms as a kid though.

The October 87 Storm was blamed for creating a local climate imbalance which led to a long run of snowless winters until 1991 across the south.

We had a storm break out today Monday September 5th at 1am here in Birmingham, it woke me up by overhead lightning and thunder , first time ones woke me up during the night for at least 5 years. I watched it for about 15 minutes and then went back to bed. There were two separate cells , one to the north east of Birmingham and one to the south east of Birmingham, multiple cloud to cloud flashes every 20 to 30 seconds illuminated the sky. The weather radar application on android 10 phone gave a yellow thunderstorms warning for most of south and west England .

Great video. One of your best and I have watched all of them. Here in north Kent we got hit around 3.30am but the 2nd wave you were driving through East Sussex at 5.30am died out before getting here.

Thank you. Hearing the pebbles being disturbed just to the side of me and not being able to see anyone did make me jump a bit, until I saw it wasn't someone sneaking up on me 😂

Thank you. I think Norfolk was hit by storms that developed to my north as I was heading south. They turned into very decent storms as they moved northeast across Norfolk.
