I bought one very similar years ago. I "went through' it like you have, cleaned and brushed it. I own other RA's but this one is my favorite. So smooth and consistent. Great saw.

Thank you for the review. I have one very similar given to me 20 years ago, a north American 7740 model with motor made for Japan (single phase 100V 50/60Hz) . I replaced the motor bearings after a US American friend kindly brought back imperial-sized ones for me. The reset button failed and as I could not repair it I removed it and it works fine without it. I discovered that the motor needs a thick wire supply as a low amp source can't get the motor started; certainly it would be easier with 240V requiring thinner wire for the same amps. Mine has the kickback on the front rather than at the rear. I think this might be because in north America they cut on the pull, whereas in the UK they cut on the push (? could be wrong). There are after-service lower blade guards available for some models, before they became standard. Can't find any for mine but they look simple to make and fit. I use it for cross cutting only as it seems somewhat intractable for ripping - there are easier ways. Using a dado set seems quite dangerous so though it came with one I have never used it. I only had metric holed saws but could finally fit one with a saw hole adapter. Interestingly Japan has some saw benches that are metric apart from the arbour, usually 1/2inch !

Roger, Enjoy your videos. My father passed away in January, and in his garage is a DeWalt 7770 Radial Arm Saw which probably belonged to my Architect / Builder uncle and came to him by way of his sister, but both of them have passed as well. I turned it on and it hummed a steady tone like it was trying to turn the saw, but couldn't, so I shut it off. About a week ago, I did same and it didn't even hum. I ran the multi-meter on it and removed the housing as you did in your video, so I now know the switch is not faulty. I also bypassed the switch by connecting the wiring together by the switch, then plugging it in and it still doesn't turn over. I began to attempt to separate the case to test the internal wiring, but can't get the two halves apart. Also, the crank assemble bolts were bent, but I got one out and now can't seem to get the crank reassembled...time to donate to a local machine shop to rejuvenate and sell for a couple hundred bucks? (I was hoping could find/remove brushes or ?? as it's rather greasy/dirty and hoped to find the electrical short was dirt/grease related) Thanks for your thoughts, Jim

Well I am so pleased to see yet another example of someone who cares for older finely made equipment. I also recently found a DeWalt RAS bargain at a yard sale. I paid $40 for the gem. Yes I need to make a stand and a top for it. Mine is from the late '50 early 60'. Thanks for sharing your find.

Great job on your Nice radial arm saw. I have a Dewalt Black and Decker Model R1450. My neighbor who passed away had it and his son put it at the curb. I put new table wood on the back and upright wood. Also put on an 8 inch blade and taped up an area of 8 inches on each side of the blade to keep hands out. Be safe wood working!

Hi Roger .. I have found your video so helpful as I have recently bought that exact model machine . I have always wanted a radial arm saw and I am also restoring this old boy.. I would have liked to send you an pic of this one because the arm has been extended ( very proffesionaly) for whatever reason.. it was sitting in an old pawnshop when I saw it.. the motor and a few small things need to be restored.. But thanks for your video.. I am from Boksburg in South Africa.. Greetings from a fellow wood / tool fanatic..

I have the same saw but 120 volt for Canadian power supply. The anti kick back device is backwards and should be rotated 180°. The motor has ball bearings and they sound like they should be replaced. I purchased my saw new in 1972. I replaced the bearings several years ago and the motor runs better then new. I suspect that the new bearings are better quality then the manufacturers.

Hah, go figure, the one part of yours that worked is the one part of mine that is broken! I recently acquired this same model of machine, all in working condition-except for the brake. If it was just me using it, I wouldn’t be so bothered, but I’m going to have students in my shop and I’m really not comfortable letting them use the saw if it coasts. Any tips on how to repair (or even get into!) the manual brake?

Rodger, It was so nice to see this video. I have the one I think prior to this one and actually still in reasonable state. Only the up/down shaft that is slightly rusted and therefor a bit sticky up and down - So I eagerly watched what you did. Mine is "Commercial Duty" - Whatever that implies :-) I am very limited to working space o I want to build mine into a workbench with a router and perhaps a sanding wheel on the side (Maybe an upside down jigsaw too). I just have so many double tolls and do not get to use them any more as it is too much of a schlep to get them out. How about building a wooden bench for this saw? I still have the manual!!!!

Black decker radial arm saws are dewalt designs. As for all the other dewalt power tools ( chop saw, grinders circular saws drills drywall guns) they were actually black decker industrial line rebadged as dewalt. And dewalt routers are based off Elu routers, a Swiss company B&D also bought. Dewalt only ever designed RAS.

B&D used the DeWalt name as their defacto moniker because DeWalt enjoyed a bullet proof reputation as a very high end tool maker- B&D didn't have much respect amongst professionals, and enjoyed an undeserved bootstrap ride with that attached name recognition.

Hi I'm electrical contractor based in England... I was just looking at the plugtop with the broken earth pin... Can you still plug it in like that with these types of outlets? In the UK we use socket outlets to BS1363.... BS1363s are shuttered...the earth pin is slightly longer...so when you plug in it opens the shutters to phase & neutral.... If the earth pin is broken....you can't insert the plugtop...

Hi Kate, just had a look at my machines in my workshop about half are double insulated but still have an earth plug on them for exactly the reason you say. you would not see them on a 10 amp power point in your kitchen as most appliances don't have an earth pin as you say.

Alan Wright BS1363s are a fused plugtop... They take BS1362 fuses... These typically come in 3A, 5A, 10A & 13A... you can get 1A ones as well...although not common... The BS1363 plugtops and socket outlets are rated at up to 20A...

TIME MARCHES ON - 👀 that blade is the first thing to go. A new Freud will have a third the cutting effort, twice the accuracy - something the Radial Arm saws need for lack of inherent rigidity!

Hi Roger, I really like what you do and learn a lot from you, but your claim of 2HP motor is just not right. The closer answer is 1HP. I am sure you multiplied motor amps x motor voltage and got 1440 watts then decided by 746 (watts/hp) to get 1.93 which you called 2HP. But the 1440 is total power with units of KVA. A typical single phase motor of this size has a power factor value of about 0.53 PF. PF = KW/KVA. So, the KW = PF x KVA or 0.53 x 1440 = 763.2 KW or 1.02HP. Most of the time, the motor manufacturer never puts actual HP on the nameplate. If the did, nobody would buy it, claiming the motor is too small. So, they leave it off. Another example of deceptive claims are the HP ratings on shop vacs. Those tiny little motors that are only 4" dia x 4" long are nowhere near the "apparent" or "delivered" HP values quoted. If anyone wants to dispute my claims on motor HP, just Google 240V single phase 2HP motor and look at the nameplate data. You will see the motor HP is about 9Amps. According to Roger's calculations, that motor should be rated about 2200 watts or almost 3 HP. If you want to pursue this thinking further, Google Power Factor. You will probably see a triangle with the horizontal line labeled real power and the vertical line labeled imaginary or reactive power and the longest line labeled total power. Roger used the total power to calculate the HP, but in reality we should be using the real power value to calculate HP. The key to understanding the "why" for this is only the real power does any work. The imaginary or reactive power only magnetized the motor. It is called imaginary, not because it does not do any work, but because it is the imaginary part of a complex number. This is the time when you should have paid more attention in high school math class when they talked about real, imaginary, and complex numbers. If you have read this far, thank you for sticking with me. Google has a wealth of info on complex numbers and power factor. One more snag that always comes up and that is the "j" written beside the imaginary number. The "j" is used by electrical engineers and math people use an "i" to mean the same thing. The electrical engineers probably did not want the complex "i" to be confused with the "i" for current (amps). I will stop now as this will get to be real messy if I go on any longer. Please feel free to comment.
