25 Things People Don't Realize Are Actually Quite Dangerous

Most of us have a pretty good idea of what is and isn't dangerous. Things like plane crashes for example. Those are definitely dangerous. Or animals with sharp teeth. How can those not be dangerous? Have you ever seen a shark? Yup, definitely dangerous (which is why they are in our 25 most dangerous animals list). The truth is that we are actually programmed to decipher dangerous situations. The reason people have phobias of heights is because throughout history such people have tended to live longer (they didn't usually fall off of cliffs for example). So heights are still a threat right? Well, yes, but the world we live in has changed significantly. For example, lets go back to the dangerous airplanes. People tend to think that airplanes are dangerous. Why? Well, in part because of our various phobias and built in mechanisms that we use to interpret danger around us (for example our fear of heights). The problem with this is that our built in phobias don't take modern engineering into account. We don't instinctively realize that driving is significantly more dangerous than flying. All our bodies know is that the plane is higher in the air, we don't have control of it, and it is moving very fast. Flying versus driving aren't the only activities in which we misjudge the danger. These are 25 things people don't realize are actually quite dangerous.

    +Andreas Harices There's only a few species that can be reborn. Sponges, some plants, starfish and some other animals can reproduce asexually, and if harmed in a way that rips enough of it away the pieces or leftovers can grow back to a full organism. There's also a kinda famous type of jellyfish that can go back to the hydra (premature) form if injured, allowing it to be reborn indefinitely.

    Rebekah Whitmore lol, im in Aussie now but have lived in nz for most of my life and i can tell you right now the only dangerous "animal" in nz is a wild ram or something haha, in aussie you can get fucked by not only spiders, snakes even a Caterpillars or ants etc and yes they are venomous but what about kangaroos, crocs, sharks, jellyfish, dingos... sure the terrain can be dangerous in nz but so can Aussie, try going for a drive in land and your car breaks down and you dont have much water when its 35+ degrees.... and yes.. the pavlova is yours

    I’m an equestrian and Equine Studies major and really appreciated what you said about domestic herbivores being dangerous. Way too many people don’t realise how much damage horses can do to people. I’ve heard stories of parents allowing their kids to pet or even sit on random horses without the owner’s consent, and last year my mom tried to pet the wrong horse (he was showing signs of anger/aggression, but she didn’t know that). She had a thick winter coat on and the bite still left a gigantic, dark purple and red bruise. People NEED to realize just how dangerous domestic animals can be!

    you really need to understand the importance each of these has in each other. this is one of the most common pieces of false knowledge I see. If you have a power supply that can supply enough amps to kill you 100s of times over but is limited to any common bench supply voltage max. you will be able to hold on to the lines coming right out of it forever with no problems. and if you have a supply that is limited to a small amp range (100mA is safe but painful) and can supply a few thousand volts, you will get a surge as the magnetic fields in the electronics collapse, but they don't contain enough energy to supply a lethal current dose before the voltage drops to what will make the power supplies amp limit flow through the load.

    When the current is low, it isn't dangerous at all. It can be dangerous if you are an idiot who is for some reason subjecting them self to any electrical current for an extended period of time. It's actually usually more dangerous when the voltage is low, because (generally) when the voltage is low the current Is higher. Not always, but often. Either way, low current isn't very dangerous at all.

  • @awesomejr1

    @awesomejr1

    7 жыл бұрын

    +cedrik pomerleau actually it's not a mix of both. amperage is a watts divided by volts. You can be shocked with any amount of watts and/or volts. If the amps is between .1 and .2 you can be killed. A shock over .2 amps isn't considered lethal however (as long as there's a defibrillator nearby) since the shock is strong enough to stop the heart before there's any damage to the tissue.

  • @lillianwalling9539

    @lillianwalling9539

    There are multiple formulas used to determine the voltage, resistance, current, and power of a circuit/wire. These are: P=I*E, E=P/I, I=P/E, E=I*R, I=E/R, and R=E/I Where P=Power(Watts), I=Current(Amps(Normally measured in miliamps)), E=Voltage(Volts), and R=Resistance(Ohms). When using a device such as a Tesla Coil or similar device, you can cause the voltage to become extremely high, without causing the current to go up. If it were a mix of both, I would be dead from the extreme voltage I've experienced, and so would anyone else who has used a powerful enough Tesla coil. Trust me, It's the current that kills.

  • @Lukemage
    @Lukemage7 жыл бұрын

    #16...... Voltage isn't dangerous in the same way Amperage is. Granted, you are right, don't work on anything electrical unless you know what you are doing, but 120v isn't dangerous on its own. Now, 120v at 8mA WILL kill you. You need to know more than just the voltage to determine if its dangerous or now.

  • @lillianwalling9539

    @lillianwalling9539

    7 жыл бұрын

    Exactly. In another comment thread (started by myself) There are people arguing that Its voltage that kills, or a combination of both. If it were, I'd be really dead right now. Playing with Tesla coils I've exceeded 1000000 volts, but the current is really low. Of course subjecting yourself to any amount of electricity (voltage or current) is a bad idea as it can have negative effects over the long term, but high voltage won't kill you.

    Heart condition doesn't matter, If the Current is extremely low. Of course a heart condition might change the limit, but by a negligible amount. The voltage does nothing to you that will kill you.

  • @Lukemage

    @Lukemage

    7 жыл бұрын

    Quijybo Janklebits A heart condition is irrelevant, as it is the electrical impulses from the brain to the heart that are disrupted by the amperage, stopping the heart in the process. A heart condition would neither increase, nor decrease, your vulnerability to the current. A Pacemaker might, and that is a very hazy might, increase your resistance, but by a negligible amount. Still not something to mess with, as 8mA isn't all that much, and the higher the Amperage, the greater the impact it has on your cellular structure.

    Number 21 is so right. I don't know what ever became of the situation, but I once had a girlfriend who was terrified of the dentist but had a tooth issue. One night she disappeared while texting me and I didn't think anything of it; maybe she was busy, taking care of her daughter, in the shower, anything. She finally texted me back saying she literally passed out from the pain of her toothache. She still didn't get it checked out, even with me trying to push her to see someone about it. This was only a little over a year ago, but I hope she did get it looked at.

    She must have the constitution of an ox if she can pass out from pain and still refuse help. If she had an infection the germs in the infection could travel to her heart and that would be the end of her. I have to take antibiotics when I go to the dentist because I have a stent in. If germs from having my teeth cleaned got into my system, the first place they travel to is the heart. Oh yeah, and my knee replacement. FYI not all dentists make you stay on antibiotics past the 6 mos mark.

    I can speak for the "leaving a toothache untreated". A broken tooth I used to have got infected. I did went to the dentist as soon as it started to hurt, but the infection spread really quickly through half of my face a week before my appointment to get the tooth extracted. I went to the hospital and they told me I'm in serious trouble. I had to wear a machine that injects me antibiotics every hour for 4 days. I seriously could've died.

    Dental care needs too be covered like medical care as there are lots of people that can’t afford dental care and can seriously die from dental infection as u said. I had one case that was almost too that point but thankfully I got to dentist that left me make payments on the extraction as he knew it was very serious. Affected the whole side of the face the tooth was on and required two rounds of antibiotics too kill Infection. Scary

    ***** . I'm not saying that it causes autism, but it does make people sick. It has mercury and lead in the flu vaccine. I have known people who take it every year, and straightaway take the flu every time. I've never had a flu shot and I'm as healthy as a horse. I may get a runny nose once in a while, but I almost never throw up.

    I drive 90 miles per day, Monday to Thursday. Add in the other drives I do and it's over 400 miles per week. I'm going to college to get a journalism degree... ...to be a car reviewer. Driving may be dangerous, but it's going to be the cornerstone of my career. At least I have a car with excellent crash test ratings (2011 Honda accord Sedan) and never text and drive, and haven't had a ticket or even a fender bender since I got my license on July 30, 2012. I better knock on some wood. August 26, 2016 4:36 am

    I hate that old platitude about flying being safer than driving which is entirely based on some sophistic skewing of statistics, it's incredible that people have been convinced that flying through the air at transonic speeds in a frail aluminium flown by a machine and overworked pilots is somehow safer than than driving down an open highway a little faster than a race horse. I bet if you drive like a grandmother in traffic while being as situationally aware as a fighter pilot, you're going to be safest person on the planet, you look in the rear view mirror, there is truck tailgating you, well, pull aside and let him pass, ice on the road, driver slower, crawl if it's necessary, slow down at green lights and look to your left and to your right, know how your car behaves in sub-optimal conditions. YOU ARE IN CONTROL, and though speedfreaks and drunk drivers are a danger, you can literally see them coming a mile down the road. Most dangerous situations I encounter are situations where people can't seem to assess risks correctly and instead of slowing down in an obscured curve they drive on the wrong side of the road. Well, you can be aware of this to and prepare yourself for an evasion, driving into a ditch suck but it's better than a head on collision. I actually think that this "flying is safer" myth is dangerous because people surrender subconsciously to the idea that safety behind the wheel is out of their control because there are so many idiots in traffic when they are in the best possible position to make traffic safer, unlike air travel where the only thing they can do pack lightly and listen to the safety instructions. A car is not likely to suffer such catastrophic failure on the road that it can't be brought to a safe stop, a few exotic conditions excluded.

  • @Ze8us

    @Ze8us

    ***** I drive my car several hundreds times a day and I haven't flown in 5 years and this is the experience of most people with a car which is one of several ways to skew the statistics, and depending on where you are in the world, it's not even that easy to get a drivers license and like I said, you as a driver can directly influence your safety on the road. Like I said, if you're sharp and alert in traffic, your car is in tip-top condition to the best of your knowledge, tiers are in good condition, oils are good, etc, you could almost drive to the end of eternity without anything bad happening to you. The skewed statistics are pure sophistry and it's laughable just how much resources go into making flying statistically safe versus driving a car and it's a dangerous myth because those idiots you mentioned who get drivers licences will take it as a pass to drive however they want because there is something inherently unsafe about traffic. If we spent half the safety resources on making traffic safe as we do making air travel safe, traffic deaths would plummet to zero while even if doubled the resources for air travel there would still be freak events where those air liners would come crashing out of the sky killing everyone on board.
