Being the precursor of the genre alone doesnt make them better. Hollow Knight has objectively more refined controls and movements, and lots of quality content. If you wanna discuss soundtracks or artstyle thats a more personal and subjective thing.

The term "Metroidvania" speaks for itself as the birth of the genre - any game that defines itself as such after SM and SotN is automatically paying homage.

All amazing choices. You can't go wrong with a single one. Love when I forget about one and you throw it in a video just to remind me that I still need to add one to the log.

Carrion was so much fun...I wish we could get a sequel or another game like it =( Blasphemous 2 was my game of the year for sure!!

I enjoyed the list. However I still think hollowknight should be in the seventh spot not first. Its good but that the artstyle, combat etc its not for entirely for me. Deaths gambit, last faith and blasphemous are my cup of tea.

Agreed those last three are my most fav besides last faith...I have yet to play the full game but the demo was just okay..Was the full game good?

You should have include skul. this is so underrated, the story is great, game play is awesome and the dificulty is one of a kind. you will play it non stop

I’m currently playing 8 Doors Arums Afterlife Adventure and I’m having a blast with it. Definite Hollow Knight Vibes to it.

Nice list. I´ve played maybe 20 % of the games mentioned and they definitely deserve a spot there. If these are ordered, I do think Astalon deserves to be way higher, at least top 10. They really nailed so many aspects of a good metroidvania.

ehhh.... i wouldnt say perfect, there are some games i would recommend for beginner rogue like players. some of these ones are pretty hard for anyone who doesnt play much rogue like games.

"AETERNA NOCTIS" For those who never played this game listen up: It's gorgeous and beautifully done but... it's one Hell of a game it is HARDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD don't touch it if you don't like real challenge! you'll end up destroying your PC/Console? gamepads because it does get on your nerves a lot!!!!!!!!!! TRUST ME!

Remove Shantae, Astlibra, Momodora, Carrion and replace them with Axiom Verge, HAAK, Yoku's Island Express, Steamworld Dig 2 and I can take this list seriously.

@@peterc504 I enjoyed Carrion as a game. But as a metroidvania it was meh. Didn't even have a map. Axiom Verge on the other hand was a lovely homage to Metroid with some fantastic abilities.

I agree with a lot of the games on the list, but they way out of order. Astalon and Aeterna Noctis should both be in the top 5.

ive played 4 outta these 25 games. Prince of persia: lost crown, it was decent, still could use some work on the controls and frame rates thou-8/10 for me, i looooved Blasphemous 2 everything about that game was solid-10/10, ori and the will of the wisp is really pretty and have some of the smoothest controls ive played in a rogue like, but the fact that they made the game pretty hard for beginners puts a damper on beginner rogue like players, who havent play much rogue like games-6/10 and Hollow knight is just a solid game, nothing really great about it nor bad.. its just a good rogue like game to pick up for any beginner rogue player. 10/10

Obvious top choice is obvious. To me, it personally ruined the simple perception of a Metroidvania game, making everyone expect it to be like the mentioned choice.

Overrated. One of the most essential aspects of a Metroid style game is environmental variety. Hollow Knight ain't it.

Dead Cells is not a Metroidvania, it's a roguelite/roguelike with some elements of metroidvania
