24 - Walnut and Maple Star of David Wall Clock - Manhattan Wood Project

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I was asked by the Los Alamos Chapter President of Hadassah to make something nice for a silent auction. I thought I would make an 18" tall maple/walnut clock in the shape of a Star of David. I also placed a silent (winning) bid of $200, which gave me a great gift for my wife this Hanukkah.

AdventuresInDIY Thank you! I may end up replacing the clock mechanism with one that automatically updates for daylight savings though, since I hate changing the time every 6 months. :)

You're a regular Richard Dreyfus... The clock looks great! And I'm pretty sure that's purpleheart. It explains the hardness.

Peter Brown Richard Dreyfus on a little smaller budget... :)I was thinking it was purpleheart too, but the USFS lab results said it was in family "Juglans", which is walnut. I wish it kept the purple color, but that seemed to disappear pretty quickly. My saws may be a bit dull too, since they're probably >15 years old and have never been sharpened.

Excellent project doing that clock, I'm sure your wife loves it and of course you too ha ha, also I like the way you did those half lap joints on the router table and all the awkward ways you had to fit it all together. Well done in the end. Happy Christmas and New Year to you and your family. Thanks. Barry from England.

Symon Fobbester Thanks, I suspect I first heard about the coin trick from ***** a couple years back, and it just seemed fitting.I'm curious how many will get the mashed potato thing too, especially since I had to butcher it a bit for length. The girls didn't get it, but they did a great job.

Well Done. A surprise for your home ! you challenged your skills and something you can look at with true memories of a woodworker " I made that.." and brag about it. It makes those tool investments worth more each time. Waiting for #26. Thanks. I like your projects and workshop since like most homeowners you don't have an overdone shop, yes a few extra tools but small space and well explained projects. I made adirondack chairs( woodsmith) in my basement shop and to take them out had to take the arms off to go out the side door. Now in a single car garage shop #5, I still have to think about tool arrangement even with the Shopsmith and tool stands. Thats why guys relate and watch certain utube shows. How you did something and what can help them. Keep it Safe. Hals Wood Shop

...Double-sided tape is real-good at holding the cauls in place, instead of gluing the cauls on. Try a test application and see if you agree; if not...tell me to go back from where I came...LOL Great-job keep up the good-work. Please keep your fingers clear of all things that spin my friend. Just remember this...if your gut-feeling is hesitant regarding a / an operation you are about to perform, take heed; do it another way and avoid personal-injury.

  • @ManhattanWoodProject

Normally I'd use double-sided tape, but I had run out. I didn't do a good job explaining it, but I glued a piece of paper between the cauls and the clock to make removal easier. No worries about the fingers, my digits are very important. I usually do a run-through with my cuts to make sure I know where my hands will be, where the wood will end up, etc. I have yet to pick a camera angle that doesn't make it look like I'm barely missing my fingers... :)

Thanks, and your welcome! I believe there is zero- woodworkers that do not make any screw-ups... However, the most-important thing that separates the veteran's from other's, is the ability to get out of the error, and make it known to "only 'you! I know you know exactly what I mean. lol It is also important to come-up with answers to situational-problems on the fly.
