24 HOURS WITH 8 WEEK OLD GERMAN SHEPHERD PUPPY

24 Hours with an 8 Week Old German Shepherd Puppy.
We picked up a GSD and documented a full 24 hours with our new puppy! From getting up every 2 hours, playing all day and leaning to train Zeus. He has been keeping us very busy, and has become an awesome little member of the family.

Thank you for this. I lost my two German Shepherds, Olympia and Czarina, both 12 yrs, within 2-1/2 months of each other this year. I had them both since they were 10 wks old. This has brought back wonderful memories. I adopted a GSD, in March of this year. He was 9 mons and I was the 4th owner in 7 months of his life. What happens when people get in over their heads and overwhelmed by a GSD puppy. My other GSD I adopted last month, age 5 yrs. I miss the baby stage, but God has blessed me with two more beautiful GSDs who needed a home (and they are given plenty of love.)

Sorry to hear about the loss of your German Shepherds! They are such beautiful dogs and it’s so great that you continue to adopt them. I think a lot of people don’t do enough research when getting them. Someone had Zeus for a week before deciding to re home him!

Wow. I'm sorry to hear of your loss. I had to let my 12yo go in early Nov. Had her since 6weeks. I also adopted a 4-5yo GSD at the beginning of Dec. Pretty ironic. While I really wanted another Czech/DDR puppy, I just have too much on my plate right now to put in the time required (Read: Time REQUIRED) to end up with the GSD you when you start with a puppy. I'm just happy I was able to find a GSD rescue that is settling in really well and loves to train/learn.

My 2nd GSD, first one lived 14 years not a single vet visit except for injections as pup, my new one is 13 weeks old, we feed her kibble with joint supplement + good quality dog meat, check ingredients for wheat and corn, not great for the dog. She gets fish twice a week pilchards, sardines or maceral, egg and milk mixed and a small bit of natural yogurt. The fish is great for their coat and pups need calcium so egg and milk are good in small doses. We are introducing raw food soon into her diet.

Mine is currently five months old, and I describe her as an elephant without a trunk full of energy, wild and absolutely dangerous. She’s already broken my foot tripping me going up the stairs because she had to be first.😳… now I let her go first every time I don’t even try to get near the door until she’s in it. She’s also learned to jump on my back. If I turn my back to her note, I am only 5 foot she is already 3 ft.+ on her hind legs … I have a Shepherd collie mix, and I have rescued several shepherds from shelters but they were always full grown. I had no idea they were this crazy when they were young.😳

Damn right. Sometimes can be klutzy when they are a year old, but if you've already had experience with handling a dog, German Shepherd's are SO worth it, no matter what the internet or KZread says. It takes patience like handling a human infant/baby, including teaching what they should and shouldn't do. But wow are they so worth it in the end so long as you love and respect them, they'll do the same for you. Be stern with them when have to, but do so calmly. If you're excited/frustrated, they'll pick up on it and they will in turn get excited as well.

We never really had any issues with him eating grass or dirt for a while he was digging in dirt but that didn’t last too long! We were feeding him 3 times a day, breakfast being his main meal - which is kangaroo and dog biscuits and his lunch and dinner is just biscuits.

Brought my girl home and in to bed with me at night. Never have kenneled her unless i was gone too long. She is spoiled! I still get up 3 times a night and early in morning to let her out! I know i could change this but i think itll change soon enough. Shes 10 months now. She’ll do anything for a treat! Shes food guards is all. I dont like that and discourage it. Shell get over it. Sometimes barks for excitement only which cracks me up. Runs outside bark bark bark and nothing and nobody there! I dont like it very much but again….think she’ll settle down later. Even though i brushed her since a baby she still follows the brush with her mouth. I must not be the best trainer! Again. I think shell drip this in time. In fact she probably will! They get big but are still puppy. She has many good traits too! She listens. She doesnt tear up her toys. Just paper sometimes. She doesnt bother me to play with her too much. She “waits, not now” nicely and she doesnt pull on leash hardly ever. She is one born with anxiety and on top of that she has itchies. They are a lot better with omega three and quercitin. Still want to find the answer to its cause more. No wonder she has anxiety! Shes an all black long nosed girl. German shepherd that must have Belgian shepherd ( not teruvian….google) which arnusually smaller. Shes gonna be at least 85 lbs some day. Love …..you get puppy and only know basically id they are super high drive distractable crazy or able to settle and focus…..after that its all a developing surprise.

If you’re not to sure on how much you’re feeding I’d say speak with you vet, but they burn off the food so quickly anyways that we had no issues feeding 3-4 times a day with sometimes 2 training sessions a day. Boiled chicken is a good option for training treats as it is healthy and they love it! :)

@@annapakay thank you for responding so quickly, bringing my boy home this coming weekend and I’m continuing to learn as I’m sure I will through the entire process. Ok, so boiled chicken is a great option. I’ll make sure to add that into the rotation. What about treats from the stores and such? Also, socialization, when your pup was smaller would you let a lot of people just touch him or were you selective on that ? I’ve already payed out a dog socialization schedule with some close friends that have dogs and other friends that have cats, I figure the sooner he sees these elements the more comfortable he will be with them when he’s a big boy

  • @annapakay

    @annapakay

How exciting! Yes, I was constantly googling things when we first got Zeus! And i think that’s the best thing, trying to learn as much as you can. A lot of websites have conflicting information but I think just working out what works best for you and your pup - because you will know him best! Boiled chicken we found works great for teaching new tricks as he loved it so much and still does! Then we would use store bought treats when we would go over what he already knows. I started out buying the ‘better quality’ treats from the pet store when we were training more consistently. But now we just buy a cheaper packet from the grocery store. When he was younger, and still now, we are happy for anyone to come up and pet him, (it’s a bit annoying when they don’t ask), but we think it’s good for him to meet a lot of people. Especially young kids, as we want him to build up a bit of patience and i think it helped him become a bit more gentle. It’s a great idea to get them meeting different dogs/animals, different ages, sizes, breeds. We held off going to dog parks for a while, but we made sure he had a lot of interaction with friends dogs or dogs we would meet on our walks. It sounds like you have a pretty good idea! I think your new puppy will be very happy and loved!!

Hi, in this video we’re feeding cooked beef mince with rice and veg, with dog biscuits. But we switched that pretty quickly - for breakfast he gets raw kangaroo mince with Royal Canin dog biscuits and his lunch and dinner he just gets the biscuits. Every so often he will get Greek yoghurt on his biscuits, which he loves and it’s great for his stomach

Hi, No we don’t use a crate. For the first 2 weeks we used a ‘play pen’ which was very large only for the night time. While toilet training that way if he needed to pee in the night he would make noise rather than peeing by the door. But when we leave the house for long periods of time he is free in the house and he has never destroyed anything, never has accidents in the house. I don’t think you should feel pressured to crate train - I understand why people do it but it wasn’t something I wanted to do and we have had no issues :)

Hi, I think consistency is key! Puppies can only hold their bladder for a certain amount of time. So during the night I had alarms to remind me to take him outside, and during the day I would take him outside every 2-3 hours. We praised him every time he went outside. He had very little accidents in the house and he was toilet trained within the first 2 weeks! Patience and consistency :)

why not? puppies sleep a lot of hours per day and they need to pee before they go to bed so accidents don't happen

@@mollyxoxo6312 yea they need to sleep during the day, just not like 3 hours before bedtime to help them sleep though they night. also, part of the potty trainign process includes taking them out every 2 or 3 hours so they dont have accidents. (if you couldn't tell, i'm agreeing with you)

Haha definitely not vegan! That food he was being fed was us weaning him off what the previous owner was feeding him. And he gets a nice bit of kangaroo mince every morning!
