23rd-24th July 2021 - Hampshire and Wiltshire Storms

Ойын-сауық

An area of low pressure was moving slowly northwards from France and displacing an area of high pressure that had created a heatwave across the UK for the past week. Cooler air aloft was to destabilise a warm plume of air near the surface and this was likely to result in elevated thunderstorms developing in Northern France during the evening and then move north into the South of England overnight.

When I monitor electrical storm cells on Blitzortung, I find that the originally super-intense ones originating from Northern France lose much of their power once they have passed over the Channel and hit landfall on the coast of Southern Britain. Has anyone else notice this?

It is quite common for this to happen. The environment may only be suitable for storms on the other side of the Channel and once the storm moves out of this environment it quickly falls apart. The cool waters of the Channel can also cause storms to collapse as they require heat at the surface. If a storm is elevated (the base of the storm is long way from the surface) then they are unaffected by the Channel and more driven by instability higher up. Most storms we see move up from France and keep going are elevated storms. These storms were a good example of this.

Yeah, several times in recent years I've picked up some really nasty looking storms on the lightning tracker that have seemed to be heading our way only to find they've largely fizzled out by the time they get to our shores, the main exception appears to be those that clip the Kent coast while heading into the North Sea, Dover and Folkestone seem to get the brunt.

Another excellent video. Let’s hope we have more storms

It would be cool to obtain one of those rockets, with copper wire connected to them. Launch one from a safe distance and watch a thunder bolt find an easy route to earth via the copper wire (see the video: "Will James Be Able To Catch A Lightning Bolt? | James May's Man Lab")

super cell storms crossing northern france towards southern England looses its intensity deu to heat source that is triggering these storms as they cross the cooler waters of the channel they tend to loose intensity

It's quite often the case. Storms rage across France and then the weaker remains hit the south of the UK. Not always the case though and the cool waters have little effect on elevated storms, which produce some fantastic lightning displays.

Yeah I much prefer storms where I can hear the thunder. That's why I prefer to be outside rather than stuck in a car.
