$235 The Most Confusing One Michelin Star Seafood Restaurant ─ Aphotic
At Aphotic, Chef Peter Hemsley skillfully takes advantage of the abundant seafood along California's coast, sourcing high-quality ingredients from small, sustainable suppliers. By employing techniques such as dry aging and fermentation, he creates a seafood-tasting menu that has earned the restaurant a coveted Michelin star. But is it truly deserved?

It's very refreshing to see an honest review. Your criticisms seemed fair and you did praise the dishes that deserved it. After all that's how we grow as people and chefs.
Thank you for the honest review. It is refreshing to see someone share a non-sponsored opinion these days. The trout looked dry before you even mentioned it....
I love how critical you are

Haha, thank you!
Really though its so much better to have someone that gives an honest opinion
Agree with your assessment. Seeing the food, I would not even bother to eat there. For what it’s worth, Michelin guide rates restaurants on these five qualities, some of which are subjective: 1. Quality products 2. Mastery of flavours and cooking techniques - ie. highly technical 3. Chef’s personality - I guess flamboyant chef will get the nod? 4. Value for Money - clearly subjective but $235 for 13 course, well.. maybe? 5. Consistency - ie the same dish always looks and taste the same and the inspectors visit at least two or three times to judge this.

Thank you for agreeing with me!
Don't blame Jenny, blame the Michelin inspectors for giving out the 1-star to this restaurant.

Haha, no one is to blame here, but thank you for the backup!
I don't know. It's higher-end ingredients, done in an artisan way. So, whether it's anyone's specific preference, I don't think the price is wildly off. If it's not your thing, don't go there. I do appreciate Jenny's feedback, though, so don't misunderstand me. It's just the nature of this sort of restaurant that it can be slightly polarizing.

2 out of 5 just seems unreasonably low, though I'm obviously not tasting the dishes myself

True. After finding out that Aphotic is not my thing, I definitely would not visit again. Happy that you still appreciate my feedback
I think I know why you rarely enjoy fusion cuisine. This type of cuisine often hit and miss, especially seafood, which can be disastrous if you put too many, or even worse, wrong spices
Interesting... they've really changed up the menu since I last visited in October 2023, which was basically the same menu that had earned them the Michelin star. Our whole family enjoyed that menu and its offerings, but seeing the items they've substituted in, I can see why you weren't impressed. :(
Wow this restaurant seems a bit over the top in construction and design for just 1 Michelin star. In my city, we have so many 1 Michelin starred restaurants that are basic in design. Not to mention MUCH cheaper to dine at.
