There was a similar derailment in Ajax, Ontario (Canada) in Jan. 2019. C.P.R. crews had to deforest (cut down many trees) a property and bulldoze a road into the site so they could get two large cranes setup. Took 48 hours to cleanup and remove approx. 12 intermodal cars with upwards of 24 containers, and replace the track. Several of the train cars were cut up on site and sent to a metal recycler. All the train wheels were saved and loaded on flatbed tractor-trailers. It is amazing how fast these cleanup teams work.

@@galexander9857 christ did they use giant mobile cranes or something. Could of saved many trees if they just used telescoping crane master kind of mobile cranes. Unless there's was little to no trackside space to use? Why didn't they just widen the area alongside the tracks instead, less destruction, and already railroad owned property dir the most part? Of course I know Canadas land is a pandora box of different kinds, big, peat, tundra, marshy, permafrost frozen. So that very will could be a reason to.

There are dedicated companies that do train derailments, maintenance work, e.t.c. there may actually be only 1 company that does all train cleanups across America, this one, whose name is slipping my mind. Tracked boom cranes are small, compact, but versatile on many kinds of terrains and they can certainly lift a lot more then one might realize. Americans rails after not easily accessible or near roads so 90%of the time a mobile telescoping crane would not work. If you look closely, there are 2 cranes, at least being used. 1 or both maybe crawler ones, but I could of swore there's is in fact 1 of the cranes you mentioned here being used.

I imagine they'll be sold off, the ones that are still in reasonable condition, for on-site storage, and the rest will be scrapped. There were other tracked vehicles as well, the Heavy Lift cranes for example, which used the paved roads as well, so a dozer as well?, it doesn't matter in the over all scheme of the recovery. Beside the city or county or whatever, will eventually resurface the road when the budget allows. What matters firstly is getting the damaged/de-railed train away from causing more havoc, both to the area and the railroad asap, and if tracked vehicles are it, then so be it.

In the UK our intermodal/container trains are time tabled for a maximum speed of 75mph. We don't have double stackers like the US, the bridges and tunnels don't have the clearance. It's something to see one belt through a station at 75mph. It's always in the back of my mind, what if this derails, it going to make a hell of a mess. I see no one had the sense to use steadying lines on the lower corners of the containers to prevent same from spinning while being lifted or lowered. Would also prevent damage to the containers and others.

Michael F: Now imagine the gasoline for your car costs twice as much, because the supply chain between the oil field, the refinery, and the gas station is bottlenecked because Chicken Littles think the sky is falling. Petroleum products are, yes, inherently potentially dangerous for precisely the same reason they are useful: a great deal of chemical energy is packed into a relatively small and easily handled mass of liquid. You might as well suggest we give up driving cars because people die in accidents. People accept risks like this in their everyday lives because they come to understand that it is impossible to eliminate it without unacceptably compromising the quality of their lives. Also note that doubling fuel costs will hit everyone's pocketbook at many places besides when refueling your own vehicle. It would certainly be nice if we could do without transport hazards in fuel distribution, but one must consider all the consequences of trying to eliminate such risks. Rail transport is not perfect, to be sure, but lacking adequate pipeline capacity, it is the best and [relatively] safest choice. A pipeline! Horrors! Not In My Back Yard!
