21 STRUGGLES IN MEXICO

Living in a new country is HARD! These are the struggles we faced over the past 2 years of living and traveling in Mexico.

On this very sunny day in Puerto Morelos, we're chatting about the struggles we never anticipated before coming to Mexico. Although we did tons of research before moving to Mexico, there were still countless moments in our daily life that threw us off.
Some of today's topics include:
1. Learning new customs (ex: when to tip and how much)
2. Understanding immigration policies;
3. Figuring out how to get gas (and how to avoid scams)
4. Driving in Mexico;
5. Navigating a new currency;
6. Finding certain products in Mexico;
7. Getting over our preconceived notions and misconceptions;
8. and 15 more!
Once we got to talking, we started remembering more struggles we had when first traveling in Mexico. That's why we'll be making a Part 2 (maybe even a Part 3) of this video, "Unexpected Struggles for Foreigners in Mexico."

ABOUT US (MADDIE & JORDAN)
In January 2018, we sold everything we owned in the US (except our husky Laska & what fit in our tiny, tangerine Prius C3) to travel the world-starting with Mexico. Since then, we've been making travel videos about our life in Mexico and the new experiences we encounter while traveling the world. If you'd like to join our shenanigans, subscribe to our KZread channel. You can also poke around our social media to find out what we’re up to each week.

    My struggle in PM was remembering they didn't have plastic bags. I think I bought about 100 of those fabric bags and always left them in the car or at the airbnb...... they got ice all locked up! There is a process to getting ice. How about left turns from the far right lane in Puerto Vallarta? Dialing Mexico numbers from a US phone. It took me 10 minutes to figure out how to dial I wanna pizza. PS- glad to see the PM beach shots showing the beach so clean. You should do some more videos and mention the beach since it gets a bad rep. You should also do a video in a grocery store bakery. Pastries in Mexico are magical and trying to figure out what to do is a little funny/crazy with getting the pan etc. I luv mexico.

    What you call overeasy can be "Huevos volteados", which means they fry the egg and then they flip it to cook the second side for a few seconds to not have raw parts but still have the yolk liquid. Not everyone will understand if you ask for "huevos volteados". In my experience, places like Sanborns and Toks get it right, but most little kitchens always overcook the eggs if you ask that.

    Hey guys, I’m Mexican and I have been living in Asia for 6 years already. I would say that the best advice to know about scams, how to avoid them and many other tips is to try to make friends with local people in the place you are living in as they will share with you the best way of doing the things you want to do: where to fill up the gas tank, where to go see a doctor, what food to eat, etc. That’s the way most of the people do it here. I’m from Mexico City by the way. Good luck with your adventures!

    I try to pay gas in cash. Once, I paid by credit card, and the attendant took it away, and I noticed he was writing something off my card. Thought is was a little odd, but I didn't think that much of it. The next day, I had a charge on my card for something ordered on the internet. Fortunately, the credit card company reversed the charge for me. --- (Also, unrelated, note that Oxxo is pronounced "ohk so." Remember, "o" in Spanish is always long.)

    I love the fact that fresh fruit and/or fresh squeezed juice is usually served with breakfast in Mexico. I normally cook a late breakfast at our condo now so we only eat out for late lunch or early dinner (which is extremely affordable) but I sometimes forget to buy fruit and I don't have a juicer yet so I miss breakfasts out! My funniest struggle was finding laundry soap! I was apparently looking in the wrong area of MEGA and mistakenly bought stain remover. I normally use Myers natural products in the U.S. and have yet to find any equivalent in Mexico. So far all I see is foca, persil or tide. Still, all in all, it's all worth it as in time I will figure things out and Mexico has done wonders for lowering my high blood pressure and stress. BTW: Our electric and water bills offer automatic pay options from our bank account. Mail in Mexico is slow, like by weeks or months sometimes, I will encourage my family and friends to just wait for a visit and we can exchange birthday or other gifts in person instead. (Chances are it's actually quicker anyway) Embrace the challenges my friends, it's all a learning experience!

If you ever get extraordinary service You may want to tip a little bit extra. Aldo, absolutelly, sunny side up is huevos estrellados. Anything else is pretty much how you want your huevos estrellados cooked. Hope this helps. Also, btw, you may want to try huevos divorciados, which are two huevos estrellados on the same plate, one with red sauce and the otherone with salsa verde. God bless

    Been here (PA) about a month now and I'm not sure we'd call this a 'struggle' but as you pointed out certain familiar foods are just harder to find. Things like regular dill pickles or brown sugar! We're told the local Chedraui carries regular pickles sometimes but they go fast. I can make pretty good BBQ sauce but without molasses or brown sugar it just ain't the same. So far just little stuff like that and compared to the immeasurable improvement in our day to day life, no complaints here! Cheers

    Yes, I drive a LOT in Mexico and it's sometimes hard to understand the "three lane highway" where cars going both directions yeild to the curb so a car can pass in the middle of the road making a 2 way into a 3 lane highway (if they have shoulders and most roads don't). Well, the main highways are paved, but most side secondary road may be gravel or dirt roads.

    Tip in restaurants: 10% (18% might be expected for a party of 6 or more). Eggs: “estrellados con la yema blanda”. Gas: pay attention pump screen it’s zeros then ask: For full “lleno por favor”, if not just the amount of pesos you want to add, then tip 5-10 pesos if they checked oils levels and tire pressure. Vitamins: GNC or any supermarket. Cheese: try Panela or Fresco, manchego, Gouda. Driving: use Waze (for short trips I would use Taxi or Uber availability now in many cities). Have fun in Mexico!

    23:57 It depends what you have to pay and what state you are. Most of services in CDMX can be paid only and in the backside of the bill it tells where you can pay it. For in case you lose or the bill doesn't arrive you can use an older bill with the same account number. Most of services have lax rules if you don't pay for a month (depending on the amount), you won't be out of service (except celphones), they can give another month for you to get up to date with your bills. 28:00 Is it the fist time Jordan is driving the Tangerine?

    Omg tipping is confusing everywhere. I had to call someone to help me change my tire (in the US...We pay for a membership)...it took him 5 minutes and then he reached awkwardly to shake my hand...I shook his hand, said ‘bye’ and thought ‘weird guy’... Of course it hit me that I’m an idiot and he was expecting a tip and I googled it and yes you always tip roadside assistance...how are you supposed to know these things, argh!!!

    Yes, make an entire video on living, shopping, eating, traveling, lodging, money, etc, etc in Mexico. Things have probably changed since I was last there, and I no longer have my Mexican-American BF 🙁, so I need all the help I can get. They used to have old American RR trains you could travel all the way to Mexico City. So cool, but of course, they are no longer. Too bad. They were nice and safe. Thanks for the videos.

    So, one of the new things you can do at Oxxo is that you can actually have stuff from Amazon Mexico delivered there. Just in case you won't be home to receive a package they can drop it off there for you, Oxxo charges a fee of course but you can go pick it up later. Yet another "convenience" or the convenience store.
