Trainspotting is honestly such a great book. I have an advantage when it comes to deciphering the language of the novel as I am Glaswegian. Since the slang words are spelled phonetically, it's easy for me to sound out and understand. Great video btw, I love the way you describe books

My Dark Vanessa is one of my favourite book of all time too!!! So intriguing and thought provoking

For an italian vibe, i would also recommend something by Pavese. I recently read “the beautiful summer” (la Bella estate) and it was amazing! I would also suggest something by Morante, for example “arturo’s island”. I honestly found it a bit boring because it’s really slow paced, but everyone who has read it, has loved it so idk. If you’re more into poetry Montale’s work is absolute exquisite, a bit hard tho

Omg could not agree with you more on Trainspotting, really prepared me for dialects of other ethnic writers like Hurston. Took me forever to get through Welsh’s disturbing details and highly coded dialogue.

i LOVED the secret history and i highly recommend if we were villains by m l rio for anyone who liked it! it follows a group of students at an arts school who perform shakespeare and its soooo good (and for english literature lovers, the way the boundaries between prose and verse are obscured really emphasise the motif of the transgression of the stage into reality, transgressions of morality etcetera) arguably i preferred it to the secret history but it’s phenomenal!

As a young adult equivalent of Kate Elisabeth Russel's 'My Dark Vanessa', I would recommend Sara Barnard's 'Goodbye, Perfect'. It follows quite a similar storyline (straight-A, perfect-in-all-means, fifteen-year-old girl in love with her teacher), but it's written from the perspective of her best friend who has previously been the polar opposite of her. It's a story which makes you deeply emerge in your own thoughts and perspectives on the whole situation, while it shows how the main character grows upon seeing her 'perfect' friend descend into a mess. It also has that wall-stare effect on the reader, but very likely more light-hearted than 'My Dark Vanessa' due to this being a YA contemporary. On a different note, great video, I loved it! 💕
