    Why do Americans ( even farmers, who should know better ) refer to soil as dirt ? Dirt means filth, waste, something nasty and useless. Soil might make you dirty but it is NOT dirt

    Designed and Manufactured with Ingenuity is what it said on my DMI plow. The hitch on mine lacked 'Integrity' so the local welding shop/ part time farmer rebuilt it to withstand 300 hp (5 bottom) No reason to have to fix things more than once was his motto.

  • @heatmoon

    @heatmoon

    We pulled a DMI 12 bottom with our 300hp or so 8550. What we had they called "over engineered," it was huge, really overly heavy duty. It was a site to behold. Hard to imagine something didn't go wrong during production of yours for a hitch of all things to need welding. That must have been a big job

  • @lynwessel2471

    @lynwessel2471

    @@heatmoon 8-18s was a good match for our 8650 in our soils.There were a lot of older (white) small ones that the front end ripped out, center beam was butted up against a much thicker flat plate and welded on.The hitch offset and pulling from below not hard to see why some failed. The welding shop had just finished doing another one before mine. Had a 4440 on it when it let go. Flat steel where 2 large angled pieces tying it together made it much stronger.

    Nice on the DMI. The reason is so wet is this was a plow day planned for the last weekend in July on the Saturday and it rained 3 inches the night before so it was postponed until the next day and it was just about dry enough to run out there. People traveled from all over the country to be there and they wanted to try to run surprisingly they ran a Degelman pro-till right behind the plows and the ground melted out pretty good with just one pass

I had a 4-53 N in a Dynahoe 190-4 and I got it near the redline once and thought I was going to rip a hole in spacetime. It was a great engine though. It could sit for 6 months and would be running within 5 seconds of hitting the starter.

  • @jamesmurney1374

    @jamesmurney1374

    Greatly depends on the ground and the crop. Organic crops are getting more popular and those farmers use tillage to help control weeds.

    Basically tillage is expensive... just with diesel alone....no till saves a ton of diesel cost...that being said....I don't know the current cost benefit of till vs no till.

  • @999pr1

    @999pr1

    6 ай бұрын

    So much depends on the soil, the climate, and the values of the farmer. Tillage is easy, and does a good job of covering up mistakes. On level ground, it may not be too detrimental, especially in more northern areas. On lighter, more rolling soils, properly done no till will do a better job of maintaining soil health and gives good yields, but it take more intensive management and it is harder to hide mistakes.

  • @justthings6405

    @justthings6405

    Ай бұрын

    @@samb7652 No till requires a lot of chemicals to control heavy weed pressure and more fungicides to control foliar leaf diseases that are always left on top of soil surface after harvest. Several diseases overwinter on the soil and are ready to overtake the field the following year. Examples are tan spot in the wheat and white mold in beans. If you leave diseases and weeds to keep reproducing, then the weeds get "smart" and resistance is the next problem. No right or wrong answer, just depends on your crop rotation and type of soil.

    I like this video especially because you included a look at the other tractors owners had use to pull this plow. They were debating how much horsepower the current Big Bud needed to pull the plow. A rule of thumb for handling a plow is one draw bar horsepower for every inch of plow width. If this plow can be widened to plow a swath 40 feet wide (480 inches) at minimum the tractor pulling it would need 500 hp at the draw bar. Likely 650 engine horsepower. That's a lot of tractor and power to put on the ground.

    This was filmed at a plow day open to the public. That is why there are so many people watching. In my other videos I just ask the farmer if I can film them at work. So far I have not been turned away.

    Do we not use large (oversized) tractor and attachment like the Big Bud/ DMI 21 bottom? What would be the reason for not building Big Bud/ and other large attachments for it? -Cost? -Maintenance difficulty? - weight/ material stresses? Sorry if foolish question? Richmond, VA

    Good question. In the 1970’s farm equipment was getting bigger and bigger. Plowing was the main form of tillage. By the early 1980’s tractors reached a peak in horse power as crop prices fell, drought reduced yields and high interest rates hurt sales. Plowing quickly gave way to faster paced conservation chisel plows and no-till. By 1985 the 500-600 hp tractors all ceased production. 380 hp became top end for a decade until the mid 90’s.

    The 650/50 has 75,000 pound axles. They were not set up for a differential. Even if they were the tractor has so much power you would run a great risk of just tearing up the axle. The best bet is to just power through the mud. This field had 3 inches rain on it the day before.

    You might want to mic up the interviewee next time. And maybe a wind screen. Otherwise good video.

    Yes the wind was unfortunate for the sound as the walk around went on. It was also a big plus to see the plow run. I drive 6 hours on a Saturday morning leaving at 2:00 am to see the plow and it rained 3 inches on the field just as I arrived. The interview was conducted trying to show the plow and navigate the pool of mud around it. Luckily the wind dried the field and by Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm field was mostly dry enough to plow.

    You definitely work harder than I would. The only time that I'm up at 2am is if I haven't been to bed yet. They do need to get some drainage tile in that field.
