20mm Ammo Can Stove

Ғылым және технология

Sorry for the long video, skip to 13:30 to see the test burn.
The first part of the video is showing the ammo can stove and it's features, as well as how I built it and tips for you if you are building one.
It is made out of a 20mm military surplus ammo can.
The chimney is a 4" airtight connector w/damper used as the collar. There is then a 4" to 3" reducer, and then 2 30" sections of 3" duct pipe.
Yes, I do know the dangers of using galvanized steel. I make a point of this in the first part of the video.
This is a fun project that can be done by any skill level, and can be done without welding or grinding, and with tools such as a power drill, nuts and bolts, screwdriver, wrenches, tin snips, and a file. (an angle grinder would definitely help for cutting holes). It is also a cheap project and can be done fairly easily with scrap lying around. Check out my new video on the updated test burn after leaving the stove to sit for a season.
Feel free to ask any questions you may have.
Enjoy!

Nice, I really like this one. You kept it nice and simple. The no welding thing actually made it more simple. Leaving the handle on was a good idea too. Plus if the door was too big, smoke would probably just come out anyway.

Looks good! The piping I would get in shorter lengths so you can stow it inside. Also if you have a rail yard near by....see if they'll let you grab a few chunks of coal. I've got about 10lbs that I wanna try.

Love the stove. Well done.. Ps the engineering is great, you could make these and sell them easy to camping entusiasts. How long did it take to make and what was the total cost if you had to buy all the bits? Love the project. Well done again.

You could use a couple washers and a spring on the damper to help keep it in the position without messing with the wing nut.

Great stove, nice work. The shaky handing and crappy lighting/focus take away from a great project.

I believe the discarded exhaust pipe from a muffler shop or salvage yard may work as an inexpensive or free stack.

Looks great, I really like the design. But just a heads up. This ammo can is for 20mm bullets used in guns like the M61A1 found in the F/A18. Rounds come in inert and explosive incendiary. keep up the great work.

You should change the 24ga. Sheet metal with at least 18ga or 16ga sheet metal. Reason being the 24 ga will burn out faster. Also just give the door a little 1/4" crimp on each side edges to help it sill the door better. Remove the green paint and spray high temp paint on it. To prevent the top warping use 1/4"x 1/4"x 1/8" steel angle. Use 3/16" steel plate for the baffle as you call it. It you are not able to weld it you can use 3/16"stainless steel pop rivets.

I've just been on Ebay and the average price here for a 20 c Ammo box is c. £30.00 give or take...there's a really cool German one but it's thick metal and it's more expensive (its a one off auction). The 50's and the 20's from NATO and other European countries look exactly the same but I want to go into a real live Army surplus shop so I can see what I am dealing with. Its difficult by pictures. ..cool name btw ;-) {cheeky foxie wink}.

Do thin fire bricks help with the bottom and wall from warping this way u can use it indoors I'm going to try them but slicing them might b a problem I will let you know.I want to try this in doors my trailer.put the box in a stain less steel double wall box. The door on the box should be insulated with fiber glass.I am experimenting with this if I get it right I will put it on you tube a lot of welding to no bolts maybe brass of brass copper r stainless steel and extended legs

Ah now someone is talking my language. ..welding is beyond my and I don't think I will be learning at this stage in my life. I love the stove...are they safe inside? I'm building a cabin and don't want to freeze but equally don't want to burn it down in the first week! Scottish weather has already set me back a month because of the concrete piers having to be done once the freezing temperatures are past (apparently they can crack or not set right. ..now you get the picture of my DIY level lol!).

Depending on the size of your cabin and whether you put a sheet of asbestos insulation behind the stove so that it won't let your wall get too hot, it should heat a small cabin, quite nicely! I don't have any idea of what your square footage will be so...But it should be able to heat an 800 or 900 square foot cabin/room well enough to ward off Scottish winds and cold! I live in Wyoming, USA and we get down to 40 degrees below zero Fahrenheit! It would work well enough here for a somewhat smaller size than 900 sq feet! If your cabin has a loft for sleeping or whatever, this kind of stove, for n all night burn should keep you warm in the loft while it might not keep the lower floor warm. I'm talking about warmth while you are sleeping as opposed to walking around downstairs because you won't want to burn the stove full blast at night or you will be up several times during the night to feed the fire! Best wishes! Check out the video lnk I left in the first reply to your above posted comment and you'll get some ideas for increasing the stove's efficiency!

Foxiepaws ACAnderson I would definitely NOT use this in a living space. I was thinking of making one to heat the garage (separate from the house), but it is just so so far out of code. Metal is thin, it's much too easy to tip over, it would heat a large space unless you're down south and only need a little warmth for the chill. Also if it was used heavily, the metal would probably just burn through.

Jim F Yes my sister said that I should get a proper cooking wood stove and I will probably try one like yours for the jewellery workshop I'm putting beside the cabin...I'm going to try making one of the kiln type ones too but you're right I can't mess about with fire where I am living. I think it would be great for the workshop though...it gets really freezing in Scotland!

Foxiepaws ACAnderson yeah, for sure in a work shop this is a great idea. I have to admit, I'm not too sure how thick the metal is though. For regular use, it need s to be pretty solid. As an occasional stove though, this is an awesome little idea. I really love it.

I dont understand what type of piping does one use? cant you use just plain old stove pipe? I am ready to do one of these and all these videos folks use this galvanized stuff that will kill you! what does one use for the pipe?? this is driving me mad!!

The black stove pipe will cost you more. Just use the galv. Pipe. Just make sure you have burned everything to season the whole stove. Then it should be ok.

  • @oldsstarfire

These stoves a re something you may use a hand full of times a year so rusting out is not a concern that's why the black painted pipe is over looked and the we don't care if the galv is burned off

smoke stack is the right way. bottom pipe has to go inside additional pipes as it goes up as to not leave spaces for smoke to exit. if bottom pipe went around outside of next pipe smoke would escape at each joint.
