Which would you spend your hard earned on, hot hatch or sports car?

I've got an MX5 NB, and have had it for around 10 years ant put over 20 grand into it - no forced induction, just everything but including a full restoration. I've always had a daily as well, and for a period of time I used a MK7 GTI with a few mods, and over 300hp, and yeah... nothing I've experienced aside from a Westfield/Caterham quite gives you the enjoyment of an MX5. Everything else I've owned/own has eventually gone, or will go at some point, but not the MX5. That is staying.

Wow!! That sounds mega Ben 👌 Currently umming and ahhing about spending a few grand at either Roddissons or BBR on ours next. Like you can't ever see this car going anywhere now + Mrs Mid Life Motors loves it too, which is a bonus 😎

I have a 2017 RF. I've had loads of hot hatches eg Golf GTi, Astra VXR, Civic Type R, 5 GT Turbo, Alfa 147 GTA, Astra GTE, Megane RS260, not to mention a ton of tuned Saab turbos, a few V8s etc, and they were all great (apart from the VXR, which was shite), but none were designed from the ground up to be sports cars. I think that's the key detail missed by people who can't fathom out the MX5's appeal. It's been designed to be as much fun as possible, and anything else is a secondary consideration. You almost wear it as an extension of yourself when you're driving. I know that sounds a bit wanky, but it's true. So when I jump from the my work Mitsubishi 4x4 pickup into the RF, it's like being set free

Being 100% honest, our nd is my favourite car FULL STOP So I’m with you on that one. Nice car history btw 👍 Always did like an RS Megane 👌

I've recently brought the same polo GTI in limestone grey 😍 it's a lovely car!! I'm looking to buy a cat back exhaust with a stage 1 remap but unsure if the remap will do it long term damage as a friend said it will overheat and needs a upgraded intercooler?

Good choice 😉 It seems the engine is turned down in the polo, remember the same engine makes 245bhp in the golf, so stage 1 more or less just puts you back to normal. The APR set up doesn’t require any hardware changes for stage 1. The 2 Golfs in previous videos have been running APR stage 1 for years now with no issues.

I'm considering selling my MR2 for an ND so would actually love to see them compared. I'd also very much like to know how your SLK compares with the ND as they're such different yet awesome approaches to the 2 seater convertible thing. So there's 2 videos worth straight away (sorry) 😀

Thanks, ill get on it 👍 I do love the MR2, at the price point it's unbeatable IMO, but i'd let it go before the Mazda tbh. I think Mazda hit the sweet spot with the ND, much like Mercedes with the SLK55, no idea what i'd change it for. Manual, RWD, light, 2 seater, convertible, cheap to run, reliable...all these things are disappearing in this day and age!!

@@midlifemotors5050 Thanks v much 😊 You're quite right and that's why I'm thinking ND as it'll be easier to keep longer than the poor old MR2. I'd actually love an NC3 for the hydraulic steering feel but finding a minter will be tough with nearly all getting used year round

@@veefource I had an NC3.5 and it was good, steering feel was nice. But they do seem to rust a bit quicker than the ND and IMO the MK4 seems a lot more eagre to get up and go. I found sliding the Mk3 around easier, but that could be more down to the fact it was half the price 😁

I also own both those cars, tho my gti is a 17plate dsg Still can't decide which I like best, they both have strengths and weaknesses Long journeys or passengers - Polo Daily driver Mx5 That's a close as I can get it

It's the perfect 2 car combination 👌Why would you change either?? It'd just be change for change sake...and you'd have to spend a whole heap of money for something"better"... Pointless. Mrs Mid Life Motors and I like your current choice 😉

If you shift down using the paddles, would you not get engine braking?

So... Video car reviewers typically already own something meaningful in their car park. If you had to release whatever that vehicle that currently supports your lifestyle and had to choose one of these, which would it be?

Oh for me it'd be the MX5 I'd choose. No doubt. I've always prefered a sports car to a hot hatch and although the Polo would be much better suited to everyday (its Mrs Mid Life Motors' daily driver and she loves it) life I'd make the sacrifices to have the Mazda. I think that's what these cars come down to, personal choice. No-ones necessarily right or wrong, you just prefer what you prefer and life's too short not to be driving the car you prefer. Hope that makes some sort of sense 🤞

I love them both to be honest but I'd buy the 5 ... shockingly I know 😂

It does, it does. Different price points though. You can buy both of these for price of the SLK. SLK v Evora coming soon. That should be interesting 👍
