Overall good video. It's super hard to find any info on #3 buckshot in 20 gauge. I agree with you more or less about hearing protection in that the lives of your family are more important than losing any hearing. Myself I lost some hearing in the Army from both forgetting to put in my ear plugs a few times, and also from using explosives which most hearing protection doesn't protect against due to the lower frequencies. However I did have a 9mm negligent discharge (very shameful) a few years back indoors and that definitely robbed me of some of my hearing. I was using an ultra short-barreled (7") AR-15 for home defense in 5.56mm and I recently ended up switching to a 9mm upper and a Stern Defense magwell adapter that I put on my SBR'ed lower that I had previously used for the 5.56mm 7" upper. The main reason was because 5.56mm from an SBR is VASTLY louder so I knew I had have massive hearing loss if I ever had to use that for home defense. I live in a high crime neighborhood with multiple attempted home invasions on my home over the last decade. So for me it's a VERY real possibility that I'll have to use firearms to defend my home. So I decided that a reliable 9mm AR-9 setup would work. I got a TACFIRE AR-9 upper that thankfully worked perfectly on my SBR'ed PSA lower with that Stern Defense Glock mag magwell adapter. So far 300 rounds through it (FMJ and JHP) and not a single malfunction. So I'm just sticking with that. I could have gone with a suppressed .300 blk setup (and I do have a .300 upper) however heavy grain .300 BLK rounds still over-penetrate quite a bit. So I'm just sticking with Hornady 110 grain Civil Defense 9mm through the AR-9.

I greatly appreciate that you are reviewing "less powerful" firearm options like 20 gauge and bird shot. What you do is important, because most people now live in urban areas and many live in apartments where having ammo that is too powerful is as big an issue as ammo that is not powerful enough. Simply put, if you live in an apartment it is impossible to determine what is behind your target and if it is a multi story apartment their may be no safe direction to point a gun. In that situation an AR-15 or 12 ga 00 buck is dangerous and less powerful options are needed. Thank you.

You have described the exact situation I see many self proclaimed self defense experts ignore. Even in my single family home, I have houses on all 4 sides within a few yards. I can't go blasting off 223/5.56 rounds any which way. A 12G would be a good option for me. However, back in my "free" years, I lived in townhouses. There were kids in the units on both sides. Not going to be blasting 12G buckshot in that situation and not even going to consider AR.

@@phprofYT The big problem with the entire gun media is that they are more pro-gun sales than they are pro 2A. Because most old guns and almost all modern guns can do the job and will outlive their owners, the gun industry has an interest in conning gun owners and prospective owners that what they have or what they can readily buy is obsolete or will be shortly. That is why I am very appreciative of content producers like Kentucky Patriot because he is providing information rather than shilling for the gun industry.

IMO, A Shotgun, any shotgun at close range, 10 to 20+ ft, is a meat grinder with any size shot, of course some will argue about this or that, but I have 57 years of experience with firearms and was a LEO back in the early 80s, your rig would be devastating to anyone dumb enough to come in your home thinking It would easy pickings, Thank You KP, you have a well protected fine young man, and I'm sure you know this, and are quite proud of him, Stay Safe & 2A Strong. 👍 🇺🇸

I've given s lot of thought about using ear protection for home defense and I just don't think they'll be time in my situation . The times my ears really got rocked it wasnt from my gun , but the guy next to me . The orientation of the sound source in relation to your ear makes a big difference . Great video! I think we tend to underestimate the effective range of shotguns. I sure wouldn't want anybody shooting at me at any range but 00 buckshot out to about 50 yards would certainly scare me plenty. a random 33 cal pellet would leave a serious mark at that range i suspect.

Without having done a test I can almost guarantee 00 at 50 yards would be lethal. Lot's of factors would play into it like the overall spread but 1 pellet in the head at that distance would be game over. Thanks for watching 🙂

Some people don't realize that in just about any gauge shotgun a load of bird shot, buckshot, or a slug weighs just about the same and at 7 yards or less even out of an open bore barrel the pattern will remain relatively tight resulting in the bird shot causing nearly the damage and lethality of a slug or buck shot with the added benefit of dumping all its energy in the target with the least chance of over penetration and resulting in the added safety of innocents. Fire bird shot through a full choke like I do no way someone would survive that

Ear protection... I have been an avid shooter all my life. As a Marine grunt from '75 to '79, the only hearing protection we had was cigarette butts. Fast forward through my youth and invincible years as an underground miner in Colorado to now at the age of 67. I can't hear worth a dang! Do I wish I had protected my hearing better? Every single time I have to ask someone to repeat themselves!! All of that said, I will torch off whatever is on the night stand in a home defense situation without thinking about it. Active shooter at Walmart? My ears are gonna be ringing for a month!! However, at the range, I will wear ear plugs and over the ear muffs even when I shoot a .22. Gotta protect the little I have left. You are a young man. Don't waste your hearing like I did and especially look out for Catfish John's hearing. Love your videos!

#3 buck in a 20 gauge at 25 yards? That'll put a lot of hurt on whatever it hits, as long as it patterns well out of the gun. 25 Yards is probably longer that you'll need to shoot for home defense, so you should be fine. The no ear-pro demonstration was important. It's not best case to ever do that, but you may not always have time to do it in a practical situation. I do know a few guys who have electronic ear pro as part of their home protection set up, but not everybody is going to do that, I don't do it, I know more people who don't than who do.
