My family had 2 Renault 5 in Spain. Everybody absolutely loved the car and it didn’t suffer from mechanical issues, it was very reliable. My cousin used to go for rally drives around the residential area because it was really quiet and far away - he was 15 at the time. We have so many good memories about it. I think it looks spectacular and it would sell like hot cakes, no doubt about it. This may be Renault’s pinnacle moment for EV sells

The '5' and the Citroen e-C3 are B segment cars, the Chinese don't really have anything on the market in Europe in that category. MG4, BYD Dolphin, Ora Cat are all C segment..so the French are getting a run at it before the Chinese arrive.

But looking at the overall European auto market, MG and Volvo/Polestar only make up a tiny fraction and that is after years of selling into EU.

I'm french & very critical of what our brands have been offering for the last 20 years. Affordable neo retro upgradable cars is exactly what will work for us (& European markets fond of that kind of cute things). The Citroën ë C3 & the E R5 are the most interesting products in a long time. They make our hearts beat faster which is something that rarely happens nowadays The Alpine is going to be the most beautiful little bomb & I want to see it racing.

@@bluequiltedness We can only hope so. I recall that in the 1960s and most of the 1970s, having a small car was a virtue signal that we cared about the environment and all that. Now that climate change is forcing people into more economical modes of travel (I use pedal bikes. I've had no motor vehicles for over a decade...we don't need 'em here...), you'd think people would be chomping at the bit and falling all over themselves to buy smaller EVs, wouldn't you? Alas...only places outside North America seem to have gotten the message. I COULD be wrong, though. Perhaps the media are playing up the obvious lie at ALL North Americans drive huge petrol-swilling monster trucks when, in fact, we don't. When I had a motor car, it was always a 4-cylinder compact car with a manual gearbox (except for my late, lamented Prius). I miss the push for smaller cars when we had the first OPEC-derived oil embargo. We all buckled down and curbed our appetites. Could this happen again? Who knows?

@@jimcabezola3051What annoys me is that the push for big pickups and SUVs has made it's way to EVs. GM discontinued the Chevy Bolt in order to retool for their Silverado EV and other larger EVs. These things need larger, more expensive batteries to get the same range as a compact EV with a much smaller/cheaper battery. I live in a cramped city, so I actually want a smaller car, even before considering the economic advantages. Let's hope European/Asian compact EVs make their way here

Here in France 'le cinq' is a legend, as the Mini is in the UK. The French love to buy their own products, especially when they're looking chic and priced right...so they should be a common sight on the roads by the end of this year. It will be interesting when the journos get to test drive them as the car has multi-link rear suspension, rare in a B segment car....could be fun to drive.... Interesting that so far the Chinese makers have only launched C segment cars so with the Renault 5 and Citroen e-C3 coming in at the €25,000 or less price bracket the French could do really well with these.

Not as fast or as big as a Model Y, Scenic is a well sized familly car, fitted for the european market. What's cool? It has far more range than a LR Model Y (+90km) and a bigger battery, is about 140kg lighter than a RWD Model Y! Really advanced Google automotive, and the best : this car, made in France (cells in Poland) is way cheaper than a LR Model Y! 47K € VS 50K. Better : 42K€ with the eco bonus, that is not possible with Model Y. Renault is back!

Double the size an inverter comes with a weight and cost penalty. Renault certainly balanced that against how often that capability is really needed... and decided against it. I kind of agree... I own a Tesla Model 3, which also has an 11 kW (not kWh) converter and, thinking about my past charging experience, there has been a handful of times (in 5 years) I could have used a higher capability, and zero time I would have really needed it. But other users, like yourself, certainly have different charging patterns. Would you care to share with me why exactly you regret that arbitrage?! It will be interesting to see if they can still make money on it with the downward pressure Chinese automakers put on prices as they use their excess capacity to sell into Europe you can already see cheaper Corsa variants being sold to compete. The used market will determine the true value of the design and if it will get a premium over competitors, many of us have memories of quite fragile Renault designs like the Megane that started to have big maintenance costs 6 years 70k miles. Reputation counts for a lot Chinese Automakers don't have one to lose.

The one pedal driving is in the works, for 2nd year of production. I personally would like to get rid of the back seats & have cargo space instead (with the possibility for an occasional extra seat).

WOW!!! Looks like a pure upgrade from the Zoe! I can see why they went in this direction since it’s probably a much better platform than the Leaf/Zoe was! Too bad Nissan doesn’t just import these to the US.

I doubt that Renault will be sold in the united states any time soon, mainly because they never had a foothold there and the dealership network is non existent. That doesn't stop them from making a Nissan EV on the same platform because of the dealership network and brand recognition.

If some say the price will be too high for them to afford the Renault 5, (or indeed any EV) then they may need to consider a used example, in 2 or 3 years time. You don't *have* to buy new.....

The price will go down in time (a deflation wave is behind the corner for EVs). People patient enough will be able to buy one for 20K € a few years from now, with better specs as cherry on top, exactly like with Teslas.

I really like the style of this Renault 5! However, I doubt we will see it in the US, where I believe Renault has not sold any vehicles for over 30 years. I believe the last Renault cars sold here were the US version of the Renault Medallion (sold as Renault 21 in Europe) and the Eagle (Chrysler) Premier and Dodge Monaco developed together with Renault (based on the Renault 25) sold until 1992. (ln fact, I don't believe ANY French cars from any French brands have been sold here for many decades, although I don't know why.)

Or maybe I'd forget electric and buy the new SAIC/MG3 Hybrid that offers great fuel economy and is the right size of small hatchback that Ford have chosen to discontinue and Opel/Vauxhall (Peugeot) have not really developed beyond a reskin of thier 208. The £20,000 MG3 looks like a huge winner with its hybrid offering and it will leave BYD's Dolphin for dead in the sales charts in the UK.

I think the Renault 5 looks alright but I'm extremely distrustful of price claims by any European EV maker. If they list a price at all it's "from" some figure and that figure will buy the EV with the garbage battery and motors and actually they want you to spend another 5 grand on the decent battery. And I think that will be exactly what happens with the Renault 5. On paper it'll be €25,000 but really they want you to spend €30,000 plus paint, cables and whatever else. Then it's not looking the bargain it initially was. Also, Renault has had some very serious safety shortcomings with the Zoe (zero star NCAP) and Dacia Spring (one star NCAP). While the Megane E-tech has a 5 star NCAP, I wonder what side of the fence the 5 will be on - will they equip all models with decent safety or cheap out and suffer a low rating.
