2025 Mazda CX-70 First Look | Wait, That’s Not a CX-90? | Interior, Tech, Powertrains & More

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 is an all-new nameplate, but it’s not exactly an all-new model since it’s nearly identical to the three-row CX-90. In this first look video, Edmunds' Clint Simone gives you an overview of the CX-70, including its available powertrains, interior, and what makes it different - and not so different - from the CX-90.

Like many others have said, this is simply a CX-90 with a different trim. Major fail on Mazda's part. They could have designed something with a size between the 50 and 90 while pushing the "lux" factor a bit more, yet we're looking at the same design and feel as every other Mazda SUV. A midsize 2-row SUV should not be a long as a minivan.

It may not be competing at the same level of Mercedes or BMW, but I see Mazda trying to take away some market shares from the non performance trims in Mercedes, BMW or the like. To me a more direct comparison would be Volvo. Not quite in the same league as the luxury German cars but definitely above the mass market cheaper commuter cars.

I think this is a pretty good move. I noticed a lot of CX90 buyers are empty-nesters. They don't really need 7 seats. Neither does my small family. But, I like the room. I agree with Clint that the key is to undercut the CX90 significantly, while leaving that car to people who actually need 3 rows more than a small fraction of the time. $5-7K less at the top end would make this very attractive to me. As for the comments about marketing here, with repect, most people do not know or care about the lineage. They have no "purist's conception" of what a CX70 should look like. They will see this, conclude that it looks SWEET, and that's about it. Thanks for the review!

Fail for me. Own a CX-5. Wanted something slightly larger but not as large as the CX-90 since sliding that into my garage is too tight. Hard to have enough room to walk around the car and be able to open the trunk with the garage closed (2022 X5 I tested was barely doable with it's split tailgate and it's 6" shorter..) The CX5 is my 3rd Mazda but sadly the replacement won't be another Mazda. CX5 is 180", CX70/90 is 200". If only they had chopped of about 8-10" off the car we would have had a winner.

You’re right about the pricing, but another reviewer said that the CX70 will only have higher trims, meaning that it will be more expensive than the starting price for a CX90. Personally, I have yet to hear a reviewer mention whether or not the 2nd row on the 70 is further back than the one in the CX90. Without the 3rd row, it would make sense that the 2nd row of the CX70 would be further back than that on the CX90…which should also provide more legroom for the front row seats to travel further back as well. As far as the design, I’m happy they kept the size and space of the CX90, but I think without the 3rd row they could’ve redesigned the rear hatch a little bit to make it a bit sportier and less like it’s got a bubble butt.

I'd like some facts/figures behind the statement that with the third row folded, the CX-90 and CX-70 have the same cargo capacity. Those teeny tiny 3rd rows that they jam into SUVs actually take up a large degree of cargo space when folded. Of course, Mazda is infamous for relatively cramped cargo and passenger areas in compared to their competition, so it wouldn't surprise me if they somehow figured out a way to keep the same amount of cargo space in the 70 despite it missing two whole seats from the 90.

I don't know for sure but I don't think it's a matter of cost. I'm guessing the cost to build to way less than the sales price. So they can price it at any price they want.

@@showwhite7320 That's true, there's definitely some marketing involved in deciding on a price. But there *is* a Bill Of Materials (BOM) that drives the cost too, and Mazda must make a profit on each vehicle; they can't make it a "loss leader" where they actually loose money to get people to buy other products. I have NO idea though what the BOM is, or what a typical multiplier is. And of course there's also the hundreds of millions of dollars the factory costs, plus electricity, and labor, probably the largest cost next to the BOM.

I'm disappointed. I will be looking for a new vehicle at the end of this year or first of next year. I got my wife a CX-5 this past year and have become a Mazda fanboy. I was hoping for a larger CX-50 (more rear seat room and a little more cargo space) with the inline 6 power train instead of a CX-90 without the rear seat. They should have just called in the CX-90 sport edition or something instead of trying say it is a different model altogether.

Yep. I think they are making a huge mistake in going for the luxury market. Major mistake. A Mazda is simply not the same as a Lexus or Audi but they want to command a smilar price. The build quality is simply not there. Customers don't see it yet due to the nice interior but they probably will. They may become bitter and complain. They should have just stuck with beating Honda and destroying them. They could have by beating them on price while providing more features. I think the CEO made a big mistake.

These are some major problems with Mazda's cars. PRICE The price on Mazda's has gone insane. I remember when the CX-90 was $30k 3 years ago. The price on Mazdas have skyrocketed (more than just due to COVID). The price increase stems from Mazda's management's decision to pivot towards the luxury market (BMW, Mercedes, Lexus). But the entire appeal of Mazda's was it's competitive price over Honda's. ENGINE SOUND When you're inside the car, it's loud and the interior shakes due to the engine. This is both the CX-50 and the CX-90. (I have one and test-drove the other.) SPACE Even though the CX-50's exterior is bigger than the Honda, the interior is actually smaller! How is that possible? Poor design and engineering? 😃 SMOOTHNESS Although the interior looks nice, the drive is very hard. This is due to Mazda's management. They are trying to capture every market even though if it doesn't make sense. They want to get the young sports car market so they got large rims with a turbo engine. But they also want to get the older, upscale-luxury market. The two don't mix. I don't know what Mazda's management was thinking. I don't know who's running things at Mazda but they need to get a new CEO.

Less utility for a new model is ONE OF THE LAZIEST UNVEILINGS EVER! The CX90 is 200.8 inches long. The CX5 is 180 inches. The CX70 should have been 190 inches to fill in the gap. Either the engineering team is lazy, or the planning/marketing team is supremely incompetent/ignorant. Mazda dropped the ball here.

that the whole industry moves towards touchscreen does not necessarily means it is the way to go contrary to Mazda's dial clicker. Car reviewers are also not capable of telling me long / term and wear and tear problems of cars. Once we figure out that using a touchscreen in the car gives the same distraction as a phone and we all kinda looked the other way on that one, we will see touch dials and buttons coming back, since they can be operated blindly after routine kicks in, a touchscreen will always force you to move your eyes from traffic to navigate your fingers and then read the menu.

This is interesting. To all those saying its a cx90, it is very much so but with more room in the cabin and better fuel economy/handling and towing due to less weight on the rear axle and overall lower curb weight. This could be a banger if enough people try them out. I also love the idea of no touchscreen, we had an Audi with that knob and it worked flawlessly, no fingerprint smudges and it worked well in the cold days on cold starts. Love how they market the powertrain on their website on the first page rather than apple carplay and android auto, without a hint on the powertrain which is significantly more important. You can always replace the infotainment system later on if needed, not so much on the drivetrain. RWD biased I6 turbo with a mild hybrid system, what a combo. Cant wait to drive one. ***Now that its available in Canada, the 70 is 4k more than the base 90, also once you reach the high output versions (340hp) the 70 requires 93 octance where as its not stated on the 90, so long story short, this is not the homerun I was hoping for, the pricing is the other way around for less features. The 70 can tow 1500lbs more.***

I drove a CX-30 this weekend and was not impressed. Very buzzy engine off the line around town. Much better on the highway. The cabin was very cramped and the backseat beyond ridiculously tight! The CX-5 was much better off the line, even with less horsepower than the CX-30. I assume this was the result of different tuning. Seating position way better as well. I felt like I was sunk down too low in the 30. That being said, I am not sure of the attraction to Mazda and it's range of vehicles. Some nice interiors, but nowhere near luxury as other KZreadrs have claimed. The engines are just meh! They need turbos or faster hybrid engines. Also, Mazda needs to consolidate and simply their trim levels. Way too many!
