After much anticipation, the BMW M4 CS has arrived, positioned strategically between the M4 Competition and the CSL. This model brings enhanced power and reduced weight, accelerating the legacy of BMW's M series.
Similar to the M3 CS, the new two-door M4 CS boasts a 543-horsepower engine from its twin-turbocharged inline-six. It also features a peak torque of 479 pound-feet, transmitted to the wheels through BMW's M xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The only available transmission is an eight-speed Steptronic automatic, which allows the car to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds, with a top speed capped at 188 mph.
The M4 CS sheds about 45 pounds compared to the M4 Competition. This weight reduction is achieved through the use of carbon fiber reinforced plastic in several components, including the hood, front splitter, and rear diffuser. The interior doesn't miss out on this lightweight approach either; components such as the center console, paddle shifters, and other trim pieces also benefit from this material. Even the exhaust system has been lightened by eight pounds.
The tuning of the chassis and suspension is unique to the CS model, optimizing it for sharper cornering abilities. While it doesn't surpass the CSL on the Nürburgring, it comes very close, with an official lap time of 7 minutes and 21.99 seconds, just 1.5 seconds behind the CSL.
For those aiming to maximize track performance, BMW offers track or "ultra-track" tires at no extra cost. These tires are fitted on uniquely staggered M alloy wheels, available in black or gold, sized 19 inches in the front and 20 inches in the rear.
The interior of the M4 CS features a sleek black theme with red accents, covered in a mix of leather and Alcantara. At launch, the exterior is available in two colors: Riviera Blue and Frozen Isle of Man Green, both of which are set off by exposed carbon fiber and distinctive yellow running lights in the headlights. Branding includes CS markings on the seats, center console, and door sills, as well as on the trunk and grille. The familiar kidney grille is now frameless, a change that reduces weight and adds a dash of red to distinguish it from the standard M4.
Despite the reduction in weight, the M4 CS comes with a significant price tag. Starting at $124,675, including a $1,175 destination charge, this model commands a $35,200 premium over the M4 Competition xDrive. Production is set to begin in July, with deliveries expected later in the year.
