I 100% agree with what you were saying about the value of the life of plants. I think there’s way too much focus on just owning everything that we want these days and houseplants are no different. Don’t get me wrong it’s fun to collect different plants but I think if it gets to the point where people are buying it to just tick it off a list and then when you get it it then gets neglected while they move on to the next one they ‘need’. We need to appreciate the ones we have more and focus on nurturing them and growing them big and beautiful. That’s my focus for my collection this year for sure and not to overwhelm myself with more and more.

Couldn't have said it any better. I feel as though so many plantubers love their new baby and then somehow neglect it through forgetting about it or whatever so then they "hate" the plant now because they didn't water it.....geez! They kick it to the curb and off to Lowe's for a new thrill. Many have plant addiction and have to have the latest trending new houseplant on the market....ugh! It's quite sad to say the least!

one hundred percent this. I was like this in the beginning, the need to own everything. That backfired after a few months, caring for so many plants while working fulltime. I have a smaller collection, about 75 plants, I believe, and it's much more manageable AND enjoyable.

The alocasia dragon's breath is veryyy easy to care for in my experience, so I think it definitely aligns with your goals! Out of the 15 alocasia I own, I think it's the least fussy, probably because the leaves are so leathery.

@@tddas8008 Alocasia Dragon's Breath is a specific cultivar of Alocasia heterophylla. I've not heard of Heterophylla Silver but it's definitely possible that is just another name for Dragon's Breath if yours looks similar, that happens a lot in the plant market!

I definitely want more Hoya too. I have a Hoya Obovata that is ready to bloom for the first time ever, probably in the next week. I can’t wait. I’ve never had one bloom for me yet. Hoyas are quickly becoming my favorites out of all my houseplants.

I've taken a combined 4 months off last year for surgeries, and because I live alone, I couldn't take care of my 300+ plants, so lost many plants since my first surgery (replaced both knees) since last April:( We try, but sometimes it's beyond our control. The fun part is resupplying my addition, lol.

I LOVE small-leafed Hoyas! I have 24+ currently and have so many on my wish list. I love growing them from cuttings - makes me feel like I have a green thumb. They grow so fast, once they get established though and I'm running out room. 😆 I want the Scindapsus Tricolor, too. I love Scindapsus - such an easy-going plant and so, so beautiful! If I had a bigger place, maybe those large leaf plants would be in my collection. Right now, I'm satisfied looking at other people's collections online. 😍

I can understand not wanting to be stressed out so much by plants. I'm kinda grateful for not having too much space, because I only have around 30 plants. But that also means that I focus on them, give them opportunity to thrive and I can just decompress and relax while tending to them. I can put two hours of work a week into them, but I can also shorten it to just half an hour. I love that caring for plants is still a really peaceful and relaxing time for me

Yes, I too, have 30 plants and no more. I'm peaceful and relaxed because of it I think just like you. I don't want to be married to my plants and constantly stress about them when I'm here or gone. I stiil like my hobby and feel good at the end of the day:))

ZZ plant, bird of paradise, monstera adansonii and calathea zebrina are on their way to me right now and I cannot wait for them to arrive 😍 ZZ plant was on my wishlist for few years but I was very bad at taking care of plants so I didn't dare to get it. Now, I am ready. Last weekend I stayed at place where they had multiple pots with ZZ plants. I think that was like a green light for me because I finally bought one less than a week later. I am over the moon I will finally have it at home 😊

So the schismatoglottis, I’ve found, needs to be planted in a larger & deeper pot, which handles the needy watering. Also, any plant that gets mealybugs, if seasons allow, put outdoors and wasps (yes, wasps) will hunt down those buggers! I would love an Anthurium veitchii as well, and a variegated adansonii… oh Claire, that’s a dangerous question, my list has just gotten much longer! I got a Thai Constellation last spring, and it’s still probably one of my favorite plants!

The alocasia dragons breath is a stunning plant and I even just bought a second so I could pot them together and have a fuller pot. The Hoya guning gading is such a beautiful plant when sun stressed I find it is deceptive though in growing. The leaves are thin but really rigid and it at least for me is rather fussy with watering until you get the hang of it. Stellar list for the year and I would point you at the Hoya goldeneye if you like unusual looking Hoya.

Congratulations on your baby A. veitchii. It is so much fun to grow aroids from seedlings. As exciting as it is to buy a mature plant, I have noticed that in the time it takes a mature import to recover from the shock and acclimate, a well cared for seedling can equal its size in about a year. In my experience, the domestically grown seedlings I buy usually do not come with pests or disease and acclimate to ambient home conditions within a few months. There are so many pros to a seedling. I just love growing them and watching their leaves change through maturity. They are so satisfying to grow. 💚

I attended two plant swaps last year, and was gifted so many beautiful specimens by more experienced growers and I can't wait to be able to return the favor. Dear Claire, I hope that all plants from this list will come your way soon. People use to say :"Third time is a charm". Please don't give up, no matter what number this attempt has. The key word is TIME, not a third. I do not have a written wish list. But I love a challenge. If someone (to whom I listen) says something like "it's not worthy", "never again" or "impossible to grow as a houseplant" - that's it, I want it, and somehow it will find me. Best wishes to you, Joli and your plants.

I met the owner of ecuagenera and asked him for advice on my anthurium waroqueanum and he told me it’s fine in household conditions (mine is around 50% humidity give or take) and keep it in super super super chunky mix and keep it in a tray with water at all times. My Frosted Heart grows like a weed even in low light and low humidity. The root system is massive! You should stick yours in an aroid mix. I love love love Syngoniums and I might get the pure green chiapense. Not all of them have arrow leaves, for example syngonium steyermarkii.

Question for everyone--is there a reason ppl choose to say "sp" when naming certain plants vs others? As far as I can tell "sp" just means "species" so anytime we're naming a type of Hoya, Philodendron, etc., "sp" technically precedes the specific name of any of them.

Last year for me it was the year of hoyas and I feel like this year it's going to be the year of succulents since I find myself looking and researching huernia, stapelia, less common euphorbia etc

I think wishlists are wonderful way to do window shopping because after you write that plant on your wishlist, you can continue on your life without having to buy anything immediately, or ever. I keep a long long list of plants on my phone and I feel no pressure to get anything from there. It's the list of wants, not needs😌 I should declutter or sell plants before I could possibly buy new ones. I am pregnant and I've already started to think that I definitely need to make room for other things too and not just plants. Do I really need to take growlight out from the bedroom?!😬🤭 I love balcony gardening and next summer I probably can't carry 20 litres of water there every day, so painful cuts needs to be made in what comes to my yearly vegetable jungle... I've basically grown as much things on my balcony as I can fit there and now it might be too much work, although that's the work I absolutely love.

Maybe veitchii if its a good price. But I already narrowed my list down, I got a gageana aurea variegata, anthurium crystallinum, philodendron painted lady and snowdrift three weeks ago :D

I enjoyed this video very much! I've been in plant purgatory this winter, with lots of plants dying and others just looking... crappy. I've passed the obsession stage now, and am much more relaxed about my plants. I did invest in grow lights, but have yet to find the right fixtures for them. I'm trying to keep the plants I have left alive, and hope to get some new ones this spring. I want cheap and easy plants: euphorbia acruensis, some cactae, Chinese money plant, asparagus fern, a Philodendron or two, a jewel alocasia, and a new Monstera.

Love your videos, first time I’ve ever posted any comment on KZread but just wanted to leave a note about the Syngonium chiapense, when I did my research I discovered that the frosted heart was not a chiapense but was classed as Syngonium maccrophylum? Anyway, I’ve recently just bought a chiapense cutting so crossing my fingers you get one soon and we can grow them together 😊👍🤞

thank you. i’m so tired of hearing that Frosted Heart is a variegated Chiapense. The two plants have a completely different growth pattern among other things. i appreciate you doing research on the matter. 💚

I didn't know they are different species! More of an excuse then to get the chiapense. I don't see much of a difference in growth pattern though.

I have an alocasia heterophylla (dragons breath) and it is the EASIEST alocasia I have next to my frydek. Literally I just ignore it, water it when I water everyone else, it loves to be in a smaller pot (I have had mine for like 2 years and I have not yet repotted it). Like it’s just such a cool and pretty plant that is so easygoing. Edit: I have a sarian and WHEWWWWW GIRL it was tough to get going but now that it has it’s also p easy. It loves pon, and the petioles are super long, so FYI lol.

I'm in my Anthurium era at the moment so this year is all about buying very few plants but making sure they are something extra special (because Anthuriums get BIG and my house is not). I'm on a mission to grow them all in ambient humidity, which isn't too much of an ask in Auckland where it is normally above 50% year-round. I do start tiny babies (which is normally all I can afford) in a mini-greenhouse but they don't go into my cabinet because then I'll just have to transition them back out five or six leaves later, lol. My last two acquisitions, just before new year, were a dark forgetii x luxurians and a dark narrow form warocqueanum and they are teeny weeny but I can see their amazing potential. I love to grow them from babies, although it's important to remember not to fill my space because they won't stay that size!
