You are so right - especially about Napa. It's all about the experience as you can easily buy wines from Bordeaux at 1/3 price and who would not prefer Pape Clemente or Pontet Canet to most 300 dollar Napa wines that all seem to taste the same? Right bank, Chile and various Spanish wines are even better values coming in at 35 to 65 bucks. By the way, I really like the introduction to your videos with the fist pumping music and rocket launch.

I agree Tom, thanks for the heads up. The hope that both France & California wineries wake up soon. I'm getting old so I will most likely only buy 2022 Rhone wines. I just had the 2019 Guigal Cote du Rhone and it was excellent.

Indeed! As a Bordeaux lover, look up the older vintages. Last weekend a Bordeaux Supérieur tasted from 1991. I know, a bad year and low-classified wine and yet the wine was magnificent for its class! A convincing and lively fragrance. Tasteful, layered and with a lot of depth. Very drinkable, elegant, dried fruit of cherries, berries and plums. Sweet tobacco, cedar, black tea and roast etc. Fine acids, excellent balance and medium finish. Don't be fooled by the circus of the new vintage that returns every year. Right, wait for the right moment and then make your move. As you indicate, excellent affordable wine is made in many places. Do not forget, within France, the southwest. Cahors, Buzet, Gaillac, Côtes de Saint-Mont, Madiran, Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh, Bergerac, Jurançon etc. Maybe not sexy and more difficult to obtain, but still affordable. And here too time has not stood still. Beautiful and quirky red, white and noble sweet. Thanks for this no nonsense video.

Spanish (and Portuguese) wines are slaying it for value. I can buy a superb Spanish wine for £25. A French equivalent is £100. There's excellent value in Italy too, once you stop buying the obvious stuff. Seriously, Spanish wine has quietly gone about transforming itself in the last twenty years. There's massive regional variety and the quality has skyrocketed. The price of good French wine is ridiculous these days and I don't miss it one bit. We don't have to wait for the price to come down and then go back to buying the same old stuff. There's loads of excellent wine out there for a fraction of the price.

I bought a lot of 2019 bordeaux en primeur at very good prices. A Lot cheaper than 2022 because of covid. I tasted them all. They are spectacular. Amazing buys.

Great insights as usual Tom. As to value, Spain just doesn’t get attention it deserves as to great value. Yes there’s Rioja and Ribera del Duero. There’s also Toro, Galicia, and Priorat regions. Incredible quality.

Yep, this UK based buyer is on strike at the moment. Pretty much avoided Bordeaux 2022 anyway with just a couple of exceptions. Will look at the 2019 Brunellos but looking at the 2016 prices in the secondary market and will avoid 2019 if it makes no sense.

Speaking of the untouchable Burgundy wines, Oregon is producing some incredible Pinot Noir. Really delicious

You're right about the hospitality business, that's what it's become.

I look at wine price from business/market view point. I often ask myself: who'd buy premium wines at restaurants? The wines there are marked up at least 2xfull retail price. For example, a full retail $200, I'd buy at discount for $150, the restaurant price = $400, adding tax & tip, you'd pay $500 easy for the bottle I pay $150 drinking at home. However, people still drink wines at restaurants. Does it tell us something? In wines, ultimately the drinkers (demand) decide the price, not the producers (supply) because of the abundance of all kinds of wines. Just as importance though, we have to look at the situation of drinkers in the spectrum of low, medium and high end market. In short, I agree that Bordeaux price has to be stagnant for a few years (except for the ultra premium) because of the volume and quality. But it should be a different story for premium Burgundy (top 1er & grand cru) in 2024, because I believe this year will be one of the best, if not the best, in finance in America & Japan. With 20-50% appreciation on investment, who cares about the price especially when the supplies are so limited. I bought a Chambertin grand cru @$225 a few yrs ago, now it's near $600, I'd expect it'll be $800 in the next couple of years because of the easy & quick $ for so many investors (drinkers as well).

I have several sources who participate in the secondary market including the auction scene and they inform me that the top end of Burgundy has basically froze. Nothing is moving at the top end. I have gone thru a market collapse in Bordeaux in the mid-seventies and don’t think it can’t happen because it hasn’t happened yet. I know two well heeled collectors of Burgundy who in the last 10 years have invested millions in top flight Burgundy. Both have stopped purchasing while one of them just auctioned over 250 cases of Grand Crus. Trees don’t grow to the sky. Past results are not necessarily indicative of future results. Beware!

@winemoneysong I get it! My guess is that, with $10-50mil invested in stocks, if the market goes up 20-40% in 2024 (I tend to be conservative), it translates to $2-10 mil in return. Do I care to spend $2000 for my favorite bottles when they were priced $500 less. I know my answer. Again, I appreciate your insight, and totally agree with your approach of buying wines. Cheers!

Everything else is going up price wise …. Why can’t these wine prices keep going up. There are more rich people than ever For someone like me. I feel I will never be able to experience these wines

There more rich people than ever but the market who buys the luxury wines are dying off with no one replacing them. Just because you have money doesn’t mean you purchase expensive wine. The 60 and over market buy the lion’s share of luxury wines and they are passing on and the younger segments don’t care about wine.
