Doug, glad to have you review and test drive the VinFast VF8. I am one of the early adopters of the first model, the 2023 VF8 Plus City Edition. Drove everyday with more than 22,000 miles for more than 13 months before I upgraded to the 2024 model. Never had big issues with the 2023 City Edition, other than a few software updates. Love driving it, especially the ADAS on Sacramento freeways during commute, and never look back to ICE cars. Still get positive compliments from other drivers on regular basis. Many people liked the design because it looks more like a normal SUV, and they particularly loved the luxurious and spacious interior. For those interested in learning about my user/owner experience with the VF8, I shared many videos on my channel.

A lot of people forget that Pininfarina didn't only work for high-end sportscar manufacturers. They were a design studio devoted to many other vehicles that are similarly anonymous such as the Hyundai Matrix, Daewoo Lacetti, the newest Mitsubishi Lancer, and several Peugeot sedans, so seeing them do a more high production model isn't that unusual. I also had to laugh when Doug was complaining about the anonymous styling both inside and out. It sounds like his big complaint is that there are almost no "quirks and features" for him to point out.

Honestly, I am very impressed with VinFast's electric car models. When I was in Vietnam, I used many public transportation services, including the taxi service with VinFast electric cars. Even though I was only in the back passenger seat or the front passenger seat, I could feel the excellent quality of the car, with smooth, reliable, and solid performance. I have used cars like the S450, Macan Turbo S, GLC250, and 4Runner, and I'm pretty sure that if I have the opportunity, I will try to own my first electric car, either the VF8 or VF9. People in Canada will definitely find the VF8 and VF9 intriguing.

In Vietnam, Japanese and Korean cars were once revered, and Vinfast cars were disliked more than anywhere else in the world. However, Vinfast now has a larger market share than any other car brand in Vietnam. When buying my car, I was sure I would choose a brand like Toyota, Ford, Kia, or Hyundai. Vinfast was somewhere at the bottom of my priority list. However, after test driving it twice, I decided to buy a Vinfast. What I like most about Vinfast is the comfortable, solid, and safe driving experience. In Vietnam, many people jokingly call Vinfast a tank because of its sturdiness and its ability to protect the driver in serious accidents

For example, test vehicles having Vietnamese navigation maps and other weird stuff like that. Doesn't inspire confidence.

@cbotten106 not when i did my drive test. Everything was good. The thing is these "reviewers" deliberately look for one thats in the worst condition and review it and another like donut. Crying about headache. I got 2 kids riding this thing all day and my wife gets car sickness sometimes but no one ever complaint about that since we got this vehicle. Other crying issues about the vehicle that i have not experienced. The problem is these guys dont own the vehicle. Theres a difference in having it as your personal vehicle and just sitting in it for 20 minutes. The vehicle has a 10 year warranty. Since i got this vehicle they havent failed to deliver their support or concerns everytime i contact them.

I like Vinfast VF8. Why? It's because I am driving one. I used to spend $100 on filling up the gas tank of the same size gas-powered SUV, but I now pay only about $40 to charge from 12% to 90% ($0.58/kWh for non-member if you're a member, you pay only $0.40/kWh, and you would pay about $33, stead of $40) at a supercharging Electrify America. With a 65% battery from 80% down to 15% on a single charge, my VF8 Plus can go roughly 170 miles during the normal weather condition in California! The best thing is now that I don't have to nervously look at the gasoline prices whenever driving past a gas station! Also, I no longer smell or see any oil leaks on my garage floor. YESSSS!

Their previous carmaking experience was essentially 4-5 years of making rebodied BMWs and Chevys, and they've never designed an entire car themselves. Thankfully EVs aren't TOO complicated to make. Hire the Italians to draw the body and interiors. Hire the Chinese to source the battery and drivetrain systems. Hire some Indians to write some of the software. Hire some Germans to consult on building a modern(ish) car factory. Slap all those things together. Hence you get a working car, but not well integrated car, since all the different major components were farmed out and quickly slapped together.

Hyundai started selling the Excel 38 years ago for under $5k when the average car sales price was over $9k. I bought a new Elantra in 2006 for $15,500 when the average car sales price was $23,600. If Vinfast was undercutting the competition by 35-50%, then you might have a point.

There are still issues. On a 2024 VF8 test drive, they couldn't open the hood - the latch was broken. Highway driving is still questionably noisy and a bit rough. All the "leather" is faux/vegan. The calibrate button for the sunroof is actually a good thing. Sometimes these are buried in a service menu or you have to use arcane button commands. Doug forgot to mention that the rear seats can recline. I did my review back on January 2nd.

Funny about all Doug's talk comparing the VF8 vs the Model Y, and yet it was excluded from the comparison chart.

Vinfast is mainly focussing on the Vietnamese and Asian car market, which is growing fast! And they do pretty well there, specially cause no import tax, and oh boy, Vietnam got high import tax on such luxury items like cars!
