2024 Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE Review | Too much of a good thing?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Triumph has updated its 'big' Scrambler 1200 range for 2024 and having already ridden the 1200 X it's now time to test the Big Daddy - the long-travel, off-road optimised XE. I've been interested to ride this for a while now having worked my way up through the Triumph Scrambler range from the 400 X through Scrambler 900 and Scrambler 1200 X. But is this XE too much of a good thing? Time to find out!

In my opinion this is the best modern retro bike! Very uni. Good for offroad and normal ride.

I feel the best Triumph Scrambler would be an updated Speed 400X with better suspension, spoked tubeless wheels, and easy height adjustment for short rider who usually miss on on the adventure style of riding. 40ps is more than enough for off-road use even when carrying luggage.

Many thanks for your critical and honest review. I'm seriously considering a 1200XE, 400x or Caballero 500 Rally to keep my Bonneville T120 company. May I ask how tall you are? I'm 6ft2" so knowing the reviewer's height helps me put ride height comments into context.

I'm a smidge under six foot and reasonably long in the leg so not short, but (as you'll have gathered) that bit of extra ride height over the 1200 X was enough to make it feel rather more intimidating at low speeds. Given you're a bit taller than me I'd wager you'd be more comfortable with it - is definitely a bike suited to bigger riders. Hope that helps!

I'm 6" 32" inseam and the xe was a bit tall. XC is 1" shorter and perfect. If I sit just right, in boots, I can flat foot. After having the XC for 6 months as my first bike, I want to add another 1200, probably an xe

I'm 5' 8" with 30" inseam. I only put one foot down at stops. I have no issues unless I go on off-road trails, then it gets tricky. I love my 1200XE.

@@PeturrD I'm sure it's something you get used to with longer on the bike and glad you can make it work for you. As I said in the vid, I'm still a little new and wobbly at the moment so I'm sure experience helps as well!

I think you’re certainly right when you say that this feels a lot different to ride compared with the X model. The X seemed very normal and I felt no challenge, but here with the XE everything turns out differently. The XE is the bike! I use it mainly as a road bike and I like that it’s a tall bike. You see everything over the traffic and it filters very well because it’s maneuverability is at the top. And the plus on top of that is that car drivers see you too very well and that’s a “feature “ that made my mind when I was hesitant in buying the bike. On the road is good to see well what you have in front of you but it’s also important to be seen by the other road users. Now that I have some thousand kms on the odometer I’m glad that I decided to conclude the business and I got it since April of this year. I also agree that the present suspensions are a bit firm on the road but that’s is a trade off between comfort and performance. I like this bike because it performs perfectly on the road and the cherry on the cake is the off road capability. In sum, the bike is awesome to ride. The prior set of suspensions was very similar. This Baja orange Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE made it fantastic for me in terms of styling, so with all the features that we know the bike has, it’s a peach of a bike! Thank you for the nice video and riding impressions! Be well ✌🏻✌🏻

Thanks! If I was doing long trips the Africa Twin would make much more sense but this is just as off-road capable, cooler and more fun for shorter blasts and fun days out. No wrong answers, just different ones!

I do like them for an off reader or adventure bike they are different to the bldy great 1290 Ktm and gs 1250/1300 bmw I’ve had 3 ktm’s 2 1290and 1190 adventure they are the dogs danglies but to high and heavy at my age and I’m thinking about this bike but wether it’s still to high I ride a 2023 rocket nice and low and smooth but don’t know if I want to go back to a high adv style bike again or get a speedmaster which I’ve had before a bobber or even a T120 bonnie decisions 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ hope you get to enjoy the scrambler ride safe mate

Certainly A LOT taller than a Rocket, that's for sure. If you're not riding off road and per the vid I'd say the 1200 X is a nicer combination of Scrambler style and more manageable seat height. Makes sense how they put a bigger difference between the X and XE than there was with the previous XC. And you could still dabble in some light off-road with an X - probably would have been fine with the track I did in the vid. Sounds like you need to get down to a Triumph dealer and try a few, which will be a fun day out in itself. Happy hunting!

Hi Dan, Thanks for the Review. I have a 1989 Honda Transalp. She is starting to misbehave after all these years. I am super ichy for the Ducati Multistrada but a divorce seriously changed my financial situation. And i am starting to look at other more cost-effective solutions than the dream bike Multistrada. I absolutely love the Multistrada (rented and test-drove a bunch) the scrambler grabs another part of my Psyche... what version of the scrambler would you point me towards. (I am 55 now, leaning more paved than off-road, live in the country, and looking for a bike to just do day trips with the girlfriend. 100 miles out tops. But it has enough torque to put a smile on my face. Thoughts?

Hi! Not sure if you've seen my Scrambler 1200 X review - kzread.info/dash/bejne/f4l6rqOiYsitpqQ.htmlsi=Ez9hqQXlRa2Uv9Ej - but for what you describe I think that would do the job nicely. The XE is a big old beast and sounds like you don't need the extra off-road ability and while the Transalp and Multistrada are both awesome (well, assuming the Ducati is - not ridden it yet but I know plenty who love it!) their real talents would probably be wasted on those shorter trips where you just want a blast to but grins on faces. Great if you have time and opportunity to go for longer tours or trips where the novelty of the Triumph would wear thin. See what you think but that would be my vote! Cheers!
