I have had my RAV4 PHEV for 2 years / 51000 km in Denmark with a lot of daily local driving and then some road trips to Norway, Sweden and Germany. It is really the best of both worlds (EV / ICE). EV only with lots of EV power in the daily city driving and sufficient EV power on motorways. Hybrid without range limitations or waiting time to charge on road trips with more than enough power in all conditions. My wife and I are wild life photographers (amateurs) so we appreciate the rather compact and very roomy car with light trail capabilities. No regrets and no problems. However, it has become more expensive and EV's have become less expensive since we bought it. We can't see us in a pure EV with the EV limitations. Sorry you can't get it - yet - in Australia as I assume it will fit nice for many of you.

Sounds like the PHEV is a good fit for you. In Australia we just don't have the sales volumes to get production to allocate numbers to us, so we're way behind the times (in many ways). I'm going back to Japan later in the year and hopefully the 2025 RAV4 new shape is available to see (PHEV I hope as well) and I'll just buy one there and import it back here. Quicker than waiting for Toyota here to decide.

I have a Rav4 Cruiser Hybrid in Australia and I'm impressed with it in terms of economy and driving performance and comfort. If the plug in Hybrid was available here I think it would sell very well as the road test demonstrates it's another level over the normal Hybrid. Having more electric range for local driving would be an advantage along with no range anxieties when on a road trip similar to the normal Hybrid. I waited 18 months for the present Rav4, so waiting wouldn't be a problem for me if I was in the market.

I have a 2020 RAV4 Hybrid and love it. I think the Prime is a perfect car for Australia to transition to full EV. The EV range would cover 90% of our driving and that's what I wish our current RAV had, a bigger battery. I've driven the Outlander PHEV but it feels so much bigger than the RAV.

Back is kitted out for overnight camping (induction cooker, sandwich toaster, coffee pod machine etc) and you can lie down full length with the rear seats folded down. Pootle around town in EV mode for zero fuel use, switch to Tarmac mode and it's seriously quick, long road trips get you 700-900km to a full tank and battery - acts as a stand-alone powerstation in camp or at home in a blackout.

It doesn’t make sense to the Toyota dealers. It will steal sales from other more profitable models. Like the RAV4 hybrid and the Kluger hybrid. They aren’t bringing it in because there will be less profit. Especially less profit from servicing

Dealers do not make the final decisions what models are coming into the country. Only Australia Toyota HQ does. Toyota dealer works like a retailer. They too buys cars from Toyota HQ then sale it using a guide line set out by Toyota. Any mark up in pricing like paint protection is direct profit to the retailer. So servicing any vehicle is done by the manufacturer diagnostic computers. All diagnostic data will be recorded. Toyota HQ will know how much is being charged to the customer. Of course the dealer buying power is much cheaper and there are bonuses from HQ.

Actually the Australian car market is awash with many different models and brands of cars. Cars are sold here people in other countries wish were sold there. What is sold here is based on what car sellers think they will make money on. Yes certain models and brands are not sold here but you’d be hard pressed to say Australian car buyers are not spoiled for choice.

These numbers come from Toyota's US website. The Australian website lists 542 liters. Nice job Paul. Just to add a note about the batteries, plural, for those who want to know how that works. When you use up the juice in the18kWh plug-in lithium-ion battery, you still have the regular standard big iron hybrid battery fresh and ready to go. That extra lithium battery is the big reason for the big price. Is it worth it? Depends on individual needs and use maybe. You may never recover the savings in reduced gas usage since electric is not free either, but a large number of people will do most of their daily driving within the lithium battery range, and then recharge overnight for lower cost than gasoline, and have a true electric experience with the option when needed to drive farther on the gas engine than any all-electric yet conceived. Cheers from Costa Rica.

We've been waiting for our Rav 4 Hybrid Cruiser for almost 2 years now and we pick it up in a week or two. Can't wait to get it. If the Prime were available here, I would seriously consider swapping over. However, the extra cash involved would buy quite a bit of petrol and you may never get even. Official answer from Sean and Tim at Toyota (Paul - you know who these guys are) is as follows; "You also raise an interesting point about PHEVs. Market feedback tells us that very few people charge their PHEVs overnight; they simply drive them like a regular hybrid, which defeats the very purpose for installing a bigger, heavier battery. We think that’s because of the relatively limited EV-only range available for PHEVs with today’s battery technology. However, the technology is moving quickly with Toyota and others spending billions of dollars to develop smaller, lighter yet more powerful batteries, including sold-state technology. Our view is that, when these improved batteries are available, PHEVs may be able to offer a range of around 200km, which would make them far more practical. In short, it’s quite possible that you will see Toyota PHEVs available in Australia within a few years".

That’s a pretty good response and it makes sense. Feel like an EV with a range extender is the best option for the moment. Say 400km EV range and get another couple 100 from the range extender to eliminate range anxiety.

I wish Toyota will stop trying to tell us what kind of car we should drive. It’s so patronising. They should provide good options for BEV, PHEV and HEV and let us decide what we want to drive, that’s how it’s supposed to work.

Plugging in my Outlander PHEV at home everyday is a no-brainer. Waking up with a full 70 or so kms of EV range every morning (and I usually charge via our solar during the day) sure beats regular visits to the servo. I only fill up once every two months if I've been on a bit of a long road-trip or overnight camp.

In theory you can get this car in Australia already as the Lexus NX450H+. Guy at work has one. Same car, different body and nice interior. However they're just over the LCT so no lease tax break, which makes it massively more expensive. And you really can't get hold of one, and I understand orders are currently closed. Maybe if NEVS comes in Toyota will get on with it. But until then...nope.

It's a pity there's no DC charging available for this PHEV, as you could recharge a 20kWh battery at 125kW in about 10 minutes. That'd be great for driving longer distances, and getting a bit of a 80km EV only boost every now and then.
