Great idea. I always thought a 3JZ for modern times would be great. Maybe a turbo one and a non turbo one like they did with the old 2JZ-GE and 2JZ-GTE. If BMW can make an emissions compliant 3.0 I6 Toyota can too. The Ineos Genadier has a 3 Liter straight 6 so it would be good competition

These trucks, the 4Runners, and Tacomas are no longer the reliable monsters they were before. This 4 cylinder engines are under a lot of stress. You'll be lucky if you see 150-200k miles without issues. A mileage that was basically the breaking period on the old vehicles.

Every Land Cruiser engine is tested in Japan for 1M miles before it can be considered as a powertrain for placement into the Land Cruiser

My 2015 land cruiser really doesn't look that bloated when it's parked next to other full size trucks and suvs. Wouldn't trade it in for this new land cruiser.

$56k is wild for a turbo-charged inline 4. It's Toyota, so it'll probably be fine, but that's a lot of weight for a 4-banger to be hauling regularly.

@senseicorey9979 I agree, and with that said, neither are larger displacement engines. Auto manufacturers aren't utilizing smaller turbo-charged engines because they're better than their larger counterparts, they're doing this to earn emission credits (unfortunately, look what happened to dodge). The 4-banger will inevitably work harder, more overall stress with time, pulling more weight than a larger V6/V8, and the MPG with modern gearing and transmissions is roughly the same--so what is the benefit of a 4-banger in a truck for the consumer?

Time will tell on durability and reliability, but engine technology has come a long way, and consider that with high-pressure turbos a small four-cylinder can make more torque at every rpm than a big six- or eight-cylinder while still having lower combustion pressures than a diesel, which are known for lasting forever. So I wouldn't necessarily make any snap judgments.

Chevy Silverado with a turbo 4 cylinder seems to be doing fine and they've been out for a few years.

Will the Land Cruiser 250 be the next Toyota SUV to get the TRD Pro and Trailhunter treatment after the Tacoma pickup and 4Runner?

Its not slimmed down. It's just as big as before.

That is a Prado version of the Land Cruiser. But with no third row? No thanks.

I'll stick with my 1975 FJ40 I bought for $5500 at Frank Motors Toyota in San Diego.

I can't find any meaningful exterior dimensions that are meaningfully different from the old version (New: 1" shorter / same width / 2" Taller) - The new is 500lbs lighter.

Still feels like this is too close to the 4runner Space. Once you load up a 4runner the price is almost the same.

I've never seen a trim level completely change the headlights. Even the housing shape is different 0:37.

You’ll be spending more on fixing the overstressed new 4 cylinder turbos over its relatively short lifespan than you ever did on the gas to power your flawless V6 or V8 over its 300,000+ mile lifespan.

The base models front looks very cheap.

Turbo/hybrid? No thanks.

I’d probably get the new 4Runner over this Land Cruiser. Same engine for a lower price. I love the styling of the new Land Cruiser but not the powertrain or the price.

It's time to accept 4cylinder Turbo - hybrids are the wave of the future. They perform very effectively, are generally more fuel efficient, have great horsepower on high end vehicles like the Landcruiser, can tow 6k plus pounds, and if one company can perfect it.....Toyota is the one. And Toyota's luxury flagship Landcruiser is ideal.

No V6 option will prevent it’s popularity

They had me sold until I heard the words "2.4 litre I-Force Max Turbo Hybrid," and "all come with an 8-speed automatic transmission." Sad. Oh well, you can still get a Ford Bronco with a 2.3 litre Ecoboost twin turbo four, that although produces less power & torque (300 bhp, 325 lb-ft) you’ll get a 7-speed (6+creeper) manual or you can opt for the 2.7 litre Ecoboost twin turbo V6 if you want more power & torque (330/415) with a 10-speed dual-clutch automatic. And in 2-door (less expensive) and 4-door models, too! And Jeep still offer the Wrangler (JL) with both a 2.0 litre turbo I4 with less horsepower and torque (270/295) and the Pentastar 3.6 litre V6 (285/260), and the 2.0 turbo comes with a 6-speed manual or an optional 8 -speed automatic that comes with the V6. And again, you get a choice of a less expensive 2-door or 4-door model. I expected more choices and more value; especially since there's an all-new 4Runner coming. Add a less-expensive and more reliable, naturally aspirated four and at least an option for a 6-speed manual as a combination in the lower-priced versions (and with 2WD or 4WD versions) and you’ll most certainly have Ford and Jeep crying themselves to sleep nightly until they've made their own. Give us an ACTUAL fun to drive and affordable vehicle before you kill off the gas powered ones altogether! 🐰

Yes but if you compare spec sheets cheaper manufacturers (the big three, notably) have always been able to beat Toyota, but it's Toyota which has earned a reputation for extreme quality and durability.

@GlennC789 Evidently, you did not watch TFL Truck's test of the 2024 Tacoma they actually purchased. Although covered under warranty, they somehow broke the transfer case while doing a routine 4WD video. Most people wouldn't refer to that as "reliability" or "durability." They all (yes, every manufacturer there is) all have issues. If you won't buy electric and pay a fortune now, they'll make sure you pay a fortune now and continuously through ownership with that Turbo/Hybrid crap most call "technologically advanced."

I prefer the Land Cruiser over the other two, except I would have like to see an ICE version offered similar to what Toyota is going to offer on the 4Runner, or better yet the V6 on the Lexus. It seems the Land Cruiser was left in the middle, for good or bad.

@henrygraterol Well, good for you, because I don't prefer the Land Cruiser and I don't apologize for that. And I find Lexus vehicles (with the exception of the ES350) to be too ugly and too expensive for what's already an expensive Toyota.

Actually the Subaru Forester Wilderness has 9.2 inches of clearance. So half an inch more than the Land Cruiser.

We’ve got a 3 month old Lexus LX, along with a old V6 Sienna. I still dislike the new Land Cruiser, it’s iffy 4 cylinders and complain about both, thanks.

The old one was a pig that served hardly any off-road purpose. The only off-roading the majority of the old ones ever did was going into a grocery store parking lot. Making them smaller, more efficient, and slightly more powerful makes much more sense.

“Better than ever” is such BS.

This is classic SUV design. Good visibility, short approach and departure angles, efficient use of cargo space, tall ceilings for a lot of head room. All good things. Jelly beans are for crossovers.
