For the seed packets that don't have pictures, like Johnny Seeds, maybe add pics of the flowers? Nice haul otherwise. Thanks for sharing.

Great choices! I love the honeynut squash. Tastes SO good!! Exceptionally fungal resistant for me. Loved being thrown on the compost pile and ignored.

New subscriber! I'm not a homesteader , but admire those that do. I've been following Jess for years as well. I'm empowered by you doing this solo. I am going to be 65 this year so it's a little in life to have this life, but I can follow your journey. I am however, growing cut flowers on a farm and they are homestead farmers. So I get to experience life on a farm. I've been deep diving your videos listening to your journey. You are amazing, inspiring and I know you're inspiring other women to take the plunge too. Good luck on your journey.

I found 800 bell seeds for $5 on amazon and tons germinated. It was insane. Because at the time Johnnys and baker creek was out. I had bells volunteering in my garden in august and September and I’m in zone 10b hot and dry. It was wild. We have them year around here but the stems stay short in the dead of summer.

First time viewer - enjoyed your haul! I admire your tenacity with lisianthus. Growing them from seed takes so much patience! Something I've learned - with pelleted seed - germination significantly decreases after the first year, so buying fresh seed each year is important. I've had some luck with second year pelleted lettuce seed, but have found lisianthus especially finicky. Good luck!

I try to save as much seed as I can. Am able to save regular potatoes, sweet potatoes, Verbascum (Mullein), Fall Sweet winter squash, Lesya Peppers, Kholznitsa honey dew melons, etc. Might try that Chocolate Cosmos. I grew that Marina Di Choggia squash and the first year they were pretty good. The next year they had a thick rind and not too much good flesh.

Wonderful seed selection. I need to pick up the baby blue eucalyptus! I finally settled on my garden theme and am in planning mode. I picked up ornamental greases also. Interested in seeing how they grow. I’m looking forward to seeing your 2024 garden!

Hii, I'm starting my first 'proper' vegetable garden and found an awesome book last week! Grow for Flavour by James Wong It explains wonderfully how to give your produce a different flavour, more nutrients and which sorts have which flavour. And it is all based on scientific research! For example: pick salad greens in the morning just an hour after watering to have the softest and freshest crops It is an awesome and fun read for anyone who want to know more about nutrients and other little tips!

You should look into growing Piracicaba broccoli. It’s supposed to be a heat tolerant, non bitter sprouting broccoli from brazil. I’m not sure who sells the seeds in the US but I easily found some in Canada.

Great haul! Sorry if you have mentioned this and I missed it, so you start any seeds indoors, or do you start all seeds in the ground? Do you feel like at your current place you have changed how and when you start seeds?

  • @terranovaacres

I tend to start everything inside except for a couple things which I direct sow - like baby greens and carrots. Starting seeds inside helps me get a bigger head start on the season (and the pests) so I can harvest sooner and harvest longer, BUT it is a financial and time investment to do so. Soil and blockers and 1020 trays and shelving and electricity for the grow lights are not free! I would say that the growing season and first/last frost here are very similar if not identical to when I was gardening in Colorado, but having the ability to start seeds inside has definitely changed when I sow them. I start most seeds in late March/early April, but if I were direct sowing everything, I would be sowing them late April to mid May.
