I hear you Lou, if our defense could have made a couple more stops, we would have been undefeated in the regular season. Also Lou how right is Vegas at the end of the regular season? Defense should be much improved with all the pieces we got and offense should be much improved if we can have a solid offensive line because we got some burners at receiver and depth at running back. I understand all the hate Oklahoma is getting and until we prove ourselves then that’s what we deserve.

The whole offense being poor and defense being good thing comes more from timely plays and play calling in general than it does stats. We all agree they had a good offense, and an average to above average defense. What OU fans (myself included) absolutely couldnt stand last year was Lebby calling 3 run plays that havent worked all game then punting 3, 4, 5 drives in a row. Couldnt put Kansas away for that exact reason. Lebby called a way too conservative game and it put the defense in poor positions where they eventually cracked. It doesnt matter where your offense ranks if you dont play well when it matters. Fans feel like the defense was consistent enough to win games but the offense play calling by Lebby left a lot to be desired. Nobody thinks he was a terrible OC, they just feel like he cost us games we definitely should have won.

Oklahoma fan here. Not really here to pick a fight but I do have to push back on some of your points. I can’t say I complete disagree with your assessment of our team last year but I have to say that on the games we lost our offense did severely underperform. The defense made plenty of stops and gave us plenty of chances to score and win those games and the offense failed. So that’s why you see OU fans complain about the offense even though statistically they ranked higher on the season than the defense. It’s fair to say the defense wasn’t great last year, but what you’re missing is that the defense improved significantly from 2022 to 2023 and can continue on that trajectory based on the talent they’ve retained and acquired. You say the secondary is their weakness, which I wouldn’t really say is right or wrong. The secondary underperformed last year, partially due to injuries. I would say the defensive line’s lack of a pass rush was a bigger weakness. I’m not worried about either this year. This is the deepest, most experienced, most talented defense we’ve had in a long time. They will continue along their trajectory of improvement and wind up being pretty darn good.

100% and I've said similar things on Lou's videos about OU. One of the biggest issues with the defense was how long it took for the players to grasp it and I think all of the fans of OU knew that but people like Lou don't have a clue about the inner workings of the team they just look at box scores and stat sheets. There was also the little issue of not having the type of defensive tackle that BV needs for his defense to work properly. That has been resolved for the most part for this upcoming season.

What most people don’t know, is that when Brent took over they had 18 scholarship players. It’s not like he was handed a loaded team to take over. He had to start from scratch. That’s why OU fans don’t fret about that first year. Yes, BV had some coaching pains with clock management and other things but that’s to be expected. The second year exceeded our expectations. That’s why we believe in BV.

Go ahead please remind the obtuse out here how many players left the team. we had 21 scholarship players total on the team in 2022, some went pro others transfered out and rileys coup had a db coach recruiting for usc while still under the employment of Oklahoma. still think Brent inherited a great ship? think again yet he made it work and fell only by mostly close games of 3 points or less. in 2022 it felt like 2005 but worse becuase we did not send 18 players to the NFL. That said Brent has the knowledge the passion the faith to get it back to where it belongs, not in the top 10 but top 3. WSith Seth Litrell we lnow what we are getting and he is going to be a hot commodity we need to ensure in 4 to 6 years someone has to pay a lot to OU to get him. Some will say that he had a great oppertunity at North Texas while true he took them to bowls and winning seasons thje university did not improve the facilities enough to be competitive. Look now what Texas State is doing, what Boise State is doing, what Northwestern is doing what Nebraska is doing. Denton is a cool town I have enjoyed the times I was there but there has to be a substantial commitment dont just hire a talented coach and think you can live off of just him. Brent will always have the dollars at Oklahoma becuase he fits that mold, Bob Stoops, One of if not the best cooach ever In Bill Snyder, why becusae he took the doormat and cleaned it up, rebuilt thje house and let that doormat read dont tread on me. Ksu was the losingest school in the entirety of College football a guranteed win year in and ourt for evedry big eight school. he took little and with his knowledge his discipline and his determination made in a national power. People try and compare Miami to0 that but there is a huge differance between Miami Fla. and Manhattan Ks. I love Bud Wolkinson and am a stauinch Sooner but we had Bennie Owens before him, we have never had a losing decade. But Coach V has mentors In Bill Snyder, Bob Stoops, and Dabho Sweeney and influences still In Barry Switzer who has close ties to OU and we love us Barry Switzer. This team will n0ot be ignored like it or not the disrepect you show Coach V will show up on gameday becuase Like Patti Gasso his team would run through a wall for him., not every coach can say that can they Mike White?

I am going to assume you didn’t actually watch OU games last year. Dillion is a good QB, but his inability to get the ball down field really hurt the offense, the majority of offense was line of scrimmage to mid distance, which allowed the defense to key off of that and they offense still did well. But the way Lebby called plays didn’t really make a lot of sense unless you understand what Dillions weakness were. The offense lost OU games, the defense kept them in games and actually allowed some game to be wins, aka Texas game.

Many people point at the Arizona game to show doubt about Arnold. They, like you, must not have seen the game. If you just look at the stats I’d agree with you. But if you break down the game, you come away with a different opinion. It’s crucial to consider the context leading up to the Arizona game. Between September and this game, Arnold had only played once, on 11/18, against BYU, and he didn’t start getting 1st team reps until two weeks before the Arizona game. Admittedly, he had a rough start in the Arizona game, going 2 of 9 for 24 yards and two interceptions in his first two possessions. However, if you look at the rest of the game, he went 24 of 36 for 337 yards and 2 TDs. The one interception during this stretch wasn’t his fault; he delivered a perfect pass; the receiver caught the ball, and the DB hit him as he turned upfield, dislodging the ball. But you’re right. Nothing to see here. Get some sleep and worry about the rest of the SEC. I’m pretty sure OU won’t be competitive this year. After all, it’s not like they have a winning record against SEC teams. And disrespected teams never rise to the occasion.

We need to improve on the Oline, we need to finish tackles on D, and we need to get the defensive mindset that we want to keep teams UNDER 20 PPG, and those things will all be huge factors. I think a lot of our fans that have watched our D the last 2 years verses the previous 7, have seen what they are hoping a trend in the right direction. The stats may not 100% back things up yet, but watching BV retool things completely (and trying to work with what he had to start), has taken a minute. But I think we are more hopeful than anything. A lot of what if’s right now, with a difficult schedule. I do think Arnold could be a gamer, but he has to prove it. I will say, each time our Oline is questioned, Bill Bedenbaugh really works his guys into a place of being tough and not playing weak. That and the return our our old S&C coach from under Stoops, I believe will help the team get to where they need to be for SEC, because the previous regime allowed a lot of bad attitudes that hurt team moral, to dictate how the team operated and I think it hurt the overall S&C. Lincoln is a hell of an offensive mind, but he is not the best CEO or HC of a big time program. He inherited a lot from Stoops, but I cannot say BV inherited the same from Lincoln.

Ou fan here. This analogy was spot on. Defensive: what hurt us last year was lack of depth. Once, injuries started piling up we had a hard time staying consistent in the secondary. If we stay healthy, I honestly think we could field a top 3 SEC defense. Offense: The coaching complaints of lebby have to do more with situational awareness. Not taking time off the clock and closing games out was a major issue. Will that change? Litrell has an air raid background- so I don’t know but BV has mentioned many times how important complementary football is. I think it all comes down to the offensive line. I think we’ll see sparks but it’ll be inconsistent. Then lack of depth will cost us games down the stretch. I see 8-4.

I've got no issue with your opinion on this and don't disagree with a lot but I would like to point out the reason why everyone hated Jeff Lebby was because his offense is so fast tempoed that he either went three and out, or scored a touchdown in 30 seconds. The defense was always on the field and never got a break and Lebbys offense just was not compatible with vinable's defensive system and he wouldn't run the ball to slow down the pace whatsoever. Bringing in Seth slows down the pace and allows both sides of the ball to get the proper rest and play time. You should look up the amount of time that the defense was on the field all last year compared to the offense. It's pretty staggering.

They didn’t throw the ball at for almost 3 quarters in the Kansas game because of what, an interception? And having 6 turnovers against AZ it’s a miracle we only lost be 2 touchdowns. The defense can obviously improve still but to suggest it hasn’t improved drastically since LR is wild.

In the Bowl Game loss to Arizona, the offense had 6 turnovers and 8 penalties for 76 yards.

20 points is good defense now days. Just look at the average. If you average 25 points or less as a defense you are doing really good with this new age of offense.

Oklahoma logic is the defense played right at or slightly better than expected last season, so assuming things progress on that side of the ball were right we’re we want to be… DG for all the great things he’s done for us, there was just some things he couldn’t do and our offense was kinda hindered. We’re one of the winningest programs in history and just because we haven’t been in the SEC doesn’t mean we don’t know football. As the saying goes”Oklahoma invented winning”🤷🏾‍♂️ been stuck in VOL country for 14 years and can’t wait for us to officially be in the SEC😂

I am a Sooner, I think what your prediction is pretty good. We could have a hecka of a year IF things go are way. (9 wins) But are O-line is the biggest problem, the QB is going to be ok I think, IF the boys up front are better than I think their going to be. I think the D will be much improved and be very solid. With a very tough schedule and a not so good O-line = 7-8 wins. Like you said there are to many IF's this year. I'm out. Boomer Sooner!

I have to agree with you, @crazyunclelou, this season for Oklahoma is going to depend on the play of Jaxon Arnold, the defense, and whether the o-line can protect Jaxon Arnold where he can complete his passes without getting sacked or having to hurry his throws. If those 3 areas of this team are successful and can play to their best ability, then I definitely see Oklahoma going 11-1, or 10-2 at the least. But, if Jaxon Arnold totally bombs and the defense and o-line are off their game a lot this season, then I don't look for them to have winning season. I think the best they will do is 7-5, or 6-6, like they had in 2022 and most likely will wind up either getting into a low tiered bowl game or not even getting a bowl bid, period. It all depends on those 3 areas and how well or poorly they play, this year.

The downside to a back loaded schedule would be that there will be injuries and so the team more than likely won't be 100%.

Hey Lou, give me your honest opinion on the schedule that eSECpn gave texsa verses Oklahoma's in conference in their first season? texsa plays the four projected bottom feeders. None of which are on Oklahoma's schedule. Seems like the eSECpn is already giving preferential treatment. Btw, have you ever been to the RRS? Those in the know, who have been to all the great CFB rivalry games will tell you that the RRS takes a back seat to no other rivalry game. Lastly, everyone going on about the O-line without acknowledging the fact that the Sooners have arguably the best O-line coach in the country? Bill Bedenbaugh and Oklahoma have put both starting tackles in the NFL's the past 2 drafts. That's with a first round selection each draft. It doesn't matter if it's a 4 year program guy or a one year transfer, BB and OU get it figured out and put dudes in The League. I don't think we lose to tennessee, texsa, midzOU or Bama. But i do see losses coming at some of the tougher road environments. eSECpn fans will learn how hard it is to get a win in Norman. Better home win percentage than nearly all those considered so tough to play at.
