So my first luxury vehicle was a Lexus GS 300 in 2001 and it was a brand new one at that. Yet my first entry to the German luxury vehicle class has been a 2011 Mercedes-Benz E350 4matic. At which point I learned that there is a stark difference between Japanese and German vehicles. I obviously graduated to a BMW in 2016 535i, and then my glorious 2021 M550i. I am currently in a 2024 X5 50e PHEV. If Mercedes continues this glorious trend in design, I might have to return to Stuttgart! Beautiful vehicle! I would like a chance at the E53 wagon here in the states though…

Looks much better than the new 5 series imo, however there are some interior design gimmicks that cause disparity with the hardware such as the super screen. The instrument cluster has a beautiful design but the bezels needed more work, those two screens were supposed to be one unit that follows the silhouette of the super screen, no need for OLED screens yet, but at least they could have implemented an anti-glare display that maybe could improve contrast, that would have been really cool

Always love your high quality reviews!! I drive a A250 4MATIC for several years now. Great car, pretty good quality. What I would rather see instead of more AI/ML is a more sophisticated adaptive cruise control. It seems like they still program this in a sort-of "hard constraint problem", where as soon as a car appears in front the brakes are utilized. Instead, Mercedes would be so much better to use a "soft constraint problem", where you have some slack in distance control with the car in front. Instead of using the brakes, just let go of the gas if possible. Also, be smarter in traffic jams by keeping track of the speed variability and compute a speed at which you can pretty much coast at a constant speed. I always seem to turn off the adaptive cruise control in these situations to give myself and passengers a smoother experience. However, where AI could really be beneficial is at the automatic high beam. I frequently have many False Negatives (the system doesn't spot an oncoming car and therefore doesn't turn off the high beam). From what I can tell this headlight detection seems to be a "solved problem" in AI. I wonder: does Mercedes have different chipsets (cheaper in cheaper models, more expensive in E/S class) for this headlight detection leading to different performance and hence experience? Questions, questions everywhere! Would love to have an in-depth video about these topics, perhaps with Mercedes engineer interview, to see how they approach this.

Great review as always. Why doesn’t Mercedes include port fuel injection along with its direct injection to help prevent the dreaded carbon build up on the back of the intake valves? Other manufacturers have successfully done this and it sure has saved owners a fortune in unplanned and unexpected repairs once the engine gets a decent amount of miles on it. Is it because they know that most of the customers lease their Mercedes vehicles and the carbon related repairs would likely occur after the lease term and factory warranty expires? Although, I’m not sure if a manufacturer warranty would actually cover repair costs for excessive carbon build up in the engine….

You mention the base price rising, however I will point out that E Class of five years ago that started $8,000 cheaper was also missing a TON of equipment that this car has standard. This E Class, maybe aside from ventillated seats, a heated steering wheel, and the drivers assist tech, comes standard with everything you need. You can go crazy like this test car has done, and a lot of the options are wonderful, but they're not striclty necessary in my opinion like they used to be. I'm talking about a base 2018 E300 missing blind spot, auto high beams, passive entry, and even heated front seats! 2017s didn't have a backup camera standard and 2016s didn't have navigation or LED headlights. We've come a long way.

But $32k in Bogle's S&P index fund then is worth $200k today, or $300k if you chose Berkshire. That's the real cost of such a car. Actually much more if you traded for a new one every three years.

Sedans are inherently more attractive than SUVs. Time will tell if this is a trend for MB or the exception. The conversion of the vast majority of luxury vehicles to four cylinders is disappointing. Why somebody hasn't had the forethought to make a nice modern inline two-liter six and use that as a nucleus of a luxury brand I don't understand. With the addition of turbocharging and 48V booster motor it would have plenty of power for most luxury drivers, imo. It should get good mpg too. I'm not sure the $80k four cylinder business is sustainable for MB (or BMW or even Lexus for that matter ) because luxury buyers are used to better.

  • @MotoManTV

I'm afraid to answer that last question . . . but here goes: Depends. On what? What the caretakers of any given OEM want? Most want to go on that race to the tech bottom, however I believe there is a path forward to attain what we both want. Have models like this that all the rage. Then, cars like the Maybach or other low volume products, steer FAR clear of screens. Folks that buy vehicles like that are not moved by the latest app or the number of screens. Who knows, it could even become aspirational for current screen junkies and may become in vogue again . . . but one can only dream.

As an owner of a current e-coupe, I am extremely disappointed in all of the new-gen MB cars. The fact that the CLE has the C-class's trash interior is a huge problem for me. Based on what I have seen and heard, this is the one car that actually improved in interior build quality and materials. I think every passenger display is a dumb gimmick so I'm glad you can exchange it for the yacht-like trim (and skip the awful selfie cam). This car gives me some hope for the next generation of MB. That said, there are things I don't like. On the exterior, I don't like the black plastic around the grille, the MB star taillights and the star-pattern grille. I think these are too reminiscent of faux luxury in low-end LV and Gucci. Gorden Wagener's fascination with this stuff is beyond me. On the interior, I think this retains some of the architecture of the w213 in non-superscreen spec. Though, it still suffers the same issues as all new MB: (i) capacitive touch; (ii) lack of nice, metallic, tactile buttons; and (iii) piano black module on the doors around the seat controls. All of these are things that could be improved in the facelift (grille, taillights, piano black). In that case, I think I might be interested in purchasing one as my 4-door car. I would totally get the 6cyl with brown extended leather + maple flowing lines wood + no hyperscreen!! I guess it's wait and see. The final things on the wishlist are the stunning rotating tweeters on the A-pillars ;)

I ordered the E450 4Matic with the regular 14” infotainment screen and the open pore maple/aluminum strip dash and center console - costs more than the super screen option, but well worth it. Got the macchiato beige/black leather interior and beige headliner, in part because the brown leather only comes with a black headliner, which I don’t like. Ordered the AirMatic suspension package (w/4wheel steering) and 20 inch light alloy/gray wheels. It’s scheduled to arrive at the dealership in about 5 weeks.

I sugggest you see, touch and feel personally cars interior materials and build quality. In my point of view it looks posh, but only looks so. All used materials are fake and gone cheaper as well interior build quality. Squeeking interior, plastics and fake leather-like materials. And smell of new car - it smells like cheap asian crap instead of mature premium brand’s interior

@@vodkatron my brother works as a Mercedes mechanic so I will get over there and spend some time with it when I get a chance! He has been sending me Snapchats of him pushing and banging on all the trim to see how it is screwed together. So far, I think its great - but only if you go for the extended leather.

Interior is a disaster. When did not using your cell phone when you're driving devolve into 4 large distracting screens with few hard buttons?

That dash is horrendous. And putting a 124 next to this did it no favors overall. Mercedes will never again be as good as the 116/123/124/126 and 140 Chassis' were. You owned those forever. This you lease and give back before the 4/50 expires. A friend is a Mercedes wholesale parts manager. Over the last 18 months, his shop has averaged one battery pack replacement per month across the "EQ" line. The first EQS having to be pushed off the transporter and into the shop....

Eliminating the "luxury" trim option for E-Class in N. America, was a horrible decision. Thanks for the tacky 2024 grills, Merc.! BOOOOOOOOO! And that illuminated grill thing REALLY SUCKS TOO!
