2024 Knitting Goals & Intentions // More focus, less WIPs and taking on new challenges

It's time to reflect back on 2023 and think about what knitting will bring me in 2024. Rather than measurable goals, I prefer to go into the year with intentions that can guide me to get the most out of the year.
I would love to know what goals & intentions you have set for 2024 so comment below and share 🩷

My intention could be choosing colours and patterns that can last time but also knit projects that sparkle joy for me and they don't have to be timeless 😂 it's the balance! Another thing, I managed to start excercising a bit more since November and that took away some of my knitting time, which was good and something that I had known I should do already for a long time. Balance here, too!

Those are wonderful intentions! Not all pieces can be timeless and fit with everything. You need a piece here and there that just get you excited to make and wear them. And the balance for finding time to work out is a really important intention and one I also need to make for myself. I find I am either working or knitting which isn’t necessarily taking care of my body or my mind. You still have to prioritize those things. Good luck with these!

OMG. I love the intentions. The setting of intentions and re-examining the balance in knitting, life, knittinglife 😂. I so appreciate the offer to help and be a resource. I get stuck in patterns because of not having the experience with knitting terms or I’m stretching my skills but it’s often a result of trial and failure. That’s not terrible but it would be great to have a place to ask to avoid some of the failures and diminish frustrations. Lovely.

You are always more than welcome to reach out to me! I sincerely mean it. I know what it’s like to feel stuck and having someone to guide you or talk things through with can really help to simplify the whole process.

My biggest intention is to stop at critical point in garment knitting, which is my favorite type of knit also, and TRY IT ON. In my treasured moments of knitting, which also serves as a source of calming therapy, i tend to want to "just keep going" instead of trying on that yoke or those sleeves to make sure the sizing is correct and, as a result, end up having to frog sometimes. It gets back to the old adage of doing a little work up front so as to avoid doing more work later. Looking forward to the survey.

That is a fantastic intention! Going on my list ✅ I usually am knitting in my PJ’s late at night and can never be bothered to take this step but it’s so important to save the headache later. Thanks for filling out the survey! 🩷

I think a design-it-yourself calculator app based on Barbara Walker’s Knitting from the Top could be really helpful for people who are learning to design and those who need more size options

Agree, that is a great idea! I personally have never even attempted to design anything because it just seems completely overwhelming in terms of all the things you need to know.

Your intention to trust when you are having doubts has struck a cord with me. I have already frogged the sweater I’m working on once when I decided it was too big. Now it is small and I keep telling myself it will be okay but I’ve decided to trust myself and frog again. What I need most is a good way to organize my patterns and be able to search them for specific things. Knitters mention some apps, I don’t want complicated or one that only works with one designer.

Nice to hear the trust one resonated! It’s a hard one to stick to but I am going to try! Pattern organization is definitely a struggle. I keep all of mine on my iCloud but as I add more it’s getting tough to keep track. Have you tried the new “make that” app? I think part of their value prop is managing and searching patterns but I can’t recall for sure. Could also use knit & note and add tags to be able to search by. It’s always so manual though

That's such a cool idea about brainstorming digital solutions for knitters! And it fits in perfectly with your resolution to connect with more knitters. Best of luck with your project - I'm going to fill out the survey, and hope you keep us updated on how it goes!

I love your intentions! My biggest intention this year is not to stress over deadlines. I put all these self-imposed deadlines on my knitting in 2023 and it really made me grumpy instead of feeling helpful. As a fellow product manager I’m so excited you’re going to dive into your ideas. I can’t wait to see what you come up with.

Thanks Sara! I totally agree on the deadlines. That is also why I don't do test knits anymore. I hate having a specific timeline to work on a piece. Not worth the stress And hopefully now that I've put out the intention to the world about the digital product I'll actually follow through. Will keep you posted ☺️

@@Goodknits_ agreed on the test knits. I did my first one last year and it was fun to knit along with others, but the timing did have me feeling very anxious. I’m very hesitant to do more.

I absolutely love your purple jumper! I don’t do intentions. I just knit the next thing that I fall in love with. I wish you the best of luck with your project. My biggest issue with knitting is actually choosing the right amount of ease.

It's my favourite jumper too! From COS so not handmade, but still beautiful Totally fine to not do intentions. I have never really done them specifically for knitting, but when I looked back at my personal ones from 2023 I realized just by setting them I did follow through so I figured I'd give it a shot. I feel better about things with some sort of end goal in mind. Interesting about the ease - what is the hardest part for you? Understanding the guidance from the designer and how it applies to you? Or determining how you personally like your ease to be regardless of what designer recommends? Or something else entirely 🙂

I think that is hard too! Until you have knitted a garment with X positive ease, you can't actually know whether that amount of positive ease is your taste or suits you, unless you happen to have same kind of construction store bought. Also my problem is that my swatch often betrays me and my tension is different in the actual garment, which also changes the fit 😅 and I'm relatively experienced knitter!

  • @Goodknits_

    @Goodknits_

@@annikak.837 interesting about the swatch! Do you do your swatches flat and then it’s your in the round tension that changes? I admit I am bad about doing my swatches in the round but I’ve never seemed to have a gauge issue myself And for ease I definitely compare to my store bought items as well to get a sense of what I might like. I know for example that hugely oversized (over 25cm) tends to not flatter my body

@@Goodknits_ it doesnt matter if i swatch flat or in the round, in a big garment my tension seems to differ from the swatch often. But often I manage to make very nice garments nevertheless 🤣

Love that you're offering to be a resource for other knitters. I also enjoy mentoring and that's something I think would be great to be more involved with! I also think there's a big potential for digital products for knitters so I'd be excited to hear what you come up with! I work in data analytics in product which has made me think about all the tools that would be helpful for knitters. I'd be happy to do an interview to help you with market research, though I will say I'm not a very tech heavy knitter 😂

Hello fellow product person! Thanks so much for offering to participate. Totally fine to not be using much tech right now - I imagine that is also something I'll uncover is many knitters still keep things old school, which is also fine 😄 I think you already filled out the Google form but in case not, here is the link! forms.gle/RWdntpRfPiAJbD1G6
