Electric vehicles might be gaining popularity in Australia, but the choice of relatively affordable go-fast options has been quite scarce - until now.
The 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance and Hyundai IONIQ 5 N are both at the forefront of performance and racetrack-ready tech, offering configurable dynamics, laugh-out-loud acceleration and even the ability to drift.
But as Sam Charlwood discovers on both the road and racetrack, one of these two EV powerhouses quickly stands tall when the going gets tough.

Hi all, lots of comments regarding the lack of Track Mode in the Tesla. We asked Tesla on multiple occasions and it was well aware of the track component of this test but it refused to unlock it for us. It was very unfortunate as no doubt it would've performed better. Hopefully the feedback on this test convinces it to change its mind!

If you're a staff of the company and the, so called, "Track Mode" can suddenly turn the already failed car into a track ready somehow, would you still block it for any reason at all? The reason they don't let it "unlocked" is because this wonderful mode is their only excuse for the car's miserable track performance no matter how, nothing else. It is actually 5 N that has some track related modes but you barely need to change any to race even one of the harshest tracks in the world such as Nurburgring and Pikes Peak. You don't honestly believe ANY current EV's other than 5 N can full attack Nordschleife for two laps in a row and more without any brake and battery fail, do you?

Most EV companies such as Tesla and Porsche do not want to provide a test car to the journalists for the track test. Just ask Sport Auto. They could not get a test car from any EV manufacturer for testing on Nurburgring until Hyundai showed up and provided an Ioniq 5N test car even before Sport Auto asked Hyundai. It just shows how much confidence Hyundai has in their product.

I can't believe some people think that the track capability doesn't mean much just because they wouldn't actually do a track driving. I only hope the wise customers know its meaning and the importance for the everyday uses as well, and try not to waste their money on the inferior ones. Besides, its two-stage inverter lets the car have 2 totally opposite characters unlike all the other typical performance vehicles which just aren't suitable for the daily drives. But then, even without any knowledge, you can also easily guess there must be some good reasons why it won 2024 World Performance Car Award against BMW, Porsche and Ferrari.

Thanks for the review. I have the M3P and will be taking it to Pheasant Wood next week. I’m coming from an i30N and I’ve driven the Ioniq 5N at SMSP - incredible car. I certainly agree about the Hyundai seats being better than the Teslas, which are quite soft in comparison. It’s a shame you didn’t have track mode on the Tesla, but from what I’ve seen on other YT review they’ll overheat along the the motors and battery pack so I find find out for myself! At Pheasant Wood and SMSP in the i30N I did get brake fade after around 3 to 4 hard laps, that’s with performance pads too. It was manageable though by braking a bit earlier. On the road and on back roads the Tesla is phenomenal and I’m loving the quiet and the sound system. Hyundai N cars are also incredibly well engineered and a heap of fun. The I5N was quite out of my budget so I went with the Tesla.

The comparison is a Joke, sorry for being plain honest. The M3P press car with a top speed of just 137kph and a track mode has been disable, thus using the throttle to adjust the turn cannot be done. The full potential of the M3P is not available. You may as well get a long range version of the M3 for testing. The N5 is a beautiful car and mimic a ICE vehicle is well done. The M3P greatest strength is it's efficiency on the road. If 95% is driven on the normal road them Tesla makes more sense with the added straight line spice for extra safety of course. I have been driving the MYP for about 1.5 years, I have hardly use the brakes for stopping. The 4wheels drive is amazing on wet/snow conditions. On a any given track days in a Tesla, the brakes pads and rotors must upgrade fitted, at least to a 400mm front rotors. The idea size would be about 450mm front and 400mm on the rear.

Personally I cannot understand why a car company would deny journalists the opportunity to ply their skill and knowledge and allow all of a cars features to be on hand. To disallow a motoring journalist the opportunity to totally demonstrate capacity an ability is something that baffles me. One trick pony is not an unfair call. True driving pleasure isn't always about driving at nine tenths , it's about finding a road you love and sinking in to a rhythm, it certainly has little to do with simple straight line performance. You need to keep in mind that the lack of Guage cluster, physical buttons, and even stalks, makes the car cheaper to produce making them more profitable to improve the car further. And you can really fix these problems with 3rd party mods. You can install your own 3rd Guage cluster, there are dials and buttons you can install for the vast majority of functions, and even a company called "enhance" is making steering wheel stalks. So you can really make up a lot of the interior drawbacks through 3rd party support, and it feels more unique to other tesla's on the road.
