2024 Ford Maverick Review: Little Truck, Big Respect

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

It’s time to test drive and review the 2024 Ford Maverick Hybrid AND EcoBoost!
Let’s test drive and review the 2024 Ford Maverick Hybrid AND EcoBoost trucks! We’re also going to compare them, so stick around for the full rankings at the end of the video.
The Maverick is a “small” work truck, slotting in under the Ford Ranger. (Stay tuned for some truck size comparisons in the video.) The Maverick is the cheapest new truck on the American market, and it has some fascinating mechanical components. It also gets great fuel mileage in hybrid form, and it takes regular gasoline - premium not necessary!
The Maverick comes in three trim levels, and each of those trims comes with the choice of a gas-powered EcoBoost engine or a hybrid. The 2.0-liter EcoBoost makes 250 horsepower, which goes through an 8-speed automatic transmission. The 2.5-liter hybrid is not a plug-in, and the truck makes 191 horsepower with the gas and electric motors. That goes through a PowerSplit electronic continuously variable transmission, and if you’re not a fan of regular CVTs, don’t worry! eCVTs are cool.
The base model XL trim starts at $23,920 for the EcoBoost and $25,420 for the hybrid. The mid-grade XLT trim starts at $26,420 for the EcoBoost and $27,920 for the hybrid. The top-tier Lariat is the big jump, and currently, it’s the only Maverick where the hybrid has a cheaper base price than the gas-only truck. The Lariat starts at $34,960 for the EcoBoost and $34,240 for the hybrid. Hybrids are only available in front-wheel drive, while EcoBoosts have front-, all-, and four-wheel-drive options. The lack of AWD is the big downside of the hybrid. (There’s also the Tremor off-road package, which is available on certain trucks.)
In this review, we’re comparing a FWD Lariat Hybrid truck (with the $1,700 Black Appearance Package) and an XLT EcoBoost, which powers all four wheels.
Overall, the Maverick is an enjoyable truck. It’s not the fastest, and I couldn’t get adaptive cruise control to work for the life of me. It also doesn’t have super comfortable seats - they’re flat, like a Barbie Jeep or an economy airline seat, making them tough on long road trips.
But the Maverick is so usable (and affordable, by modern new-car standards). The suspension is smooth and comfortable on the street, and the hybrid is ingenious for eco-conscious work-truck buyers. It’s hard to argue against as an economy work truck.
Thanks for watching my KZread channel. Enjoy the drive!

This is the first time I've seen the ECVT accurately portrayed as NOT being a CVT. THANK YOU ALANIS! Toyota started this bad name for their planetary gearset in the Prius. I don't have an alternate name in mind, but anything with CVT in it is BAD! I am a NON PICKUP person, but the Maverick has got me hooked! This may be my next vehicle in a couple years when the wife and I downsize to one car. I see it as a car with a truck bed, which greatly interests me! Definitely hybrid for us, and FWD is fine - we don't need AWD. I'm an old fart that kows what the Maverick originally was, and I think it is an AWESOME name for this car/truck!

The ECVT transmission Ford uses is the same design that Toyota uses in their hybrids. It should be very dependable unlike the belt style CVTs. (ie: snowmobile style transmission)

The first car I ever drove was my Dad’s two door Maverick! And my older brother bought our Grandparents Maverick, painted it from green to Jet Black and had the town mechanic drop a custom 289 High Performance engine in it and it was for a time the fastest car in the county, and a full on beast on the road. Loud and Fast like nothing I’ve ever experienced before or since. And that was in the early 1980’s. Thanks for a GREAT review of the this new Maverick with all the pluses and minuses and the full context to judge this great little vehicle in. Entertaining and Educational as always 😁

There has been a prototype 2025 driving around with awd hybrid badging on it. My only minor complaint about mine is the hyper seatbelt nanny. God forbid you stop at the mailbox and then don't put your seatbelt back on to go up the driveway. The truck completely flips out at you in a way that's beyond just the regular dinger.

I'm still watching the video but I just wanted to comment that I have a 2023 Maverick Lariat Hybrid and I couldn't be happier with it. I don't have a need for a full size pickup that's ridiculously priced and then I still get to shell out a boatload of money every month for gas. The Maverick Hybrid gets 40-50 mpg. If I'm easy on the gas I can usually push 50 mpg. It's not a perfect vehicle, the interior feels a little on the cheap side and the recalls have been a bit out of control but I am beyond happy with this truck.

The physical key is ridiculous, the seats are basic but I have done a few 14hr trips with no issue if the power seat didn't have the lumbar support it would be bad. Thank you very much Alanis King for explaining the difference between an “CVT” & a “ECVT” and showing them too. I absolutely love my Maverick Hybrid and the ECVT. My 2024 Lariat is my third Maverick. Started with a XLT Cactus Gray, sold it to my son. Then got an Area 51 XLT with the Luxury Package, (because my wife of 48 years likes the finer things in our vehicles.) My son did too so he sold his Cactus Gray and bought my XLT model so I moved up to the 2024 Azure Gray Lariat with all the bells and whistles. One final note, never get less than 40 MPG as average. The truck is phenomenal! One last thing, with the Tri-fold hard cover Tonneau cover it’s like having a huge trunk in the sedan…but the utility of opening it up hauling tall things. (Took an old refrigerator to the dump the other day.)

I'm aging myself here but a real key sold me on this truck. When I bought my current car my number one need was a CD player, very hard to find these days. Then the plug in apple car play told me no thanks. The feel of the seats would put me at a try for myself. I have always wanted a truck, but the sizes are crazy big these days. I’ve got a 2023 Maverick I ordered and took 9 months to get. It’s an xlt eco boost in Area 51 blue. So I’ve had it almost a year now and have about 17,000 miles on it. I only added two options. The copilot 360 and the trailer hitch. I thought I’d throw my two cents in to the conversation. Forgive me if I ramble a bit. 1. The keyed start. I like it to be honest. My wife has push to start on her car and I’m always looking for that key fob or a place to put it. I look as the key to start as a “key hanger/holder” 2. Mileage. I think ford is pretty conservative on their mileage numbers. I regularly (according to the truck) am getting 31 miles to the gallon with mostly highway driving. 3. Awd vs fwd. I chose not to option the awd. I live in Missouri and rarely need awd for anything. I figured, “I’m going for a cheap truck why option it out of being cheap for me for limited return?” I’ve always figured fwd is kind of a poor man’s 4x4 since it does so much better in snow than a rear wheel drive only truck. Awd is cool and everything but for me not worth anywhere near $2200. 3. Wired apple car play. I’ll admit that would be nice but I always plug my phone in when I get in my car no matter if it has wired, wireless or nothing at all. I figure why not keep it topped off if I can. What I don’t like is that, as you mentioned, sometimes it doesn’t connect after you plug your phone in. Other than that I’m fine with the wired car play. 4. Color. As you mentioned I’m glad it’s something other than white. I picked Area 51 blue because it’s different than white, silver or black and it was a no cost option. It’s not offered now as ford has deleted it in favor of Azure gray metallic which is a $600 upgrade. I get lots of compliments on the color. Kind of has a 1930’s vibe to it to me. All in all I love it so far. It’s exactly what I wanted in a little truck. I don’t want, need or honestly could afford a huge pickup. I like that I can actually reach in to the bed of the maverick and it gets good mileage. It would be an interesting video if you would dig in to why pickups are getting bigger and bigger. My understanding In Is that the government has tied mileage and wheel base together. The bigger the wheel base a vehicle has the lower mileage numbers it’s allowed to have. Hence car companies making trucks bigger and as a result more expensive to be able to get away with lower mileage numbers. Consumers are left with few options for reasonably sized and priced pickups. I’ve watched probably hundreds of maverick videos before and since I’ve had mine and I enjoyed your take on it very much. Thanks for the excellent review. Subbed.

My biggest gripe about the Maverick these days is that Ford seems to have followed market scalping trends and made the base model $5k more expensive than it was at launch, for basically the same exact vehicle. I remember being very excited about the $20k price point when these came out, and I was seriously planning on buying a Hybrid XLT before they became unobtanium. But now that Ford has jacked the price on them, it almost seems not fair, especially considering there are still people selling these trucks on the used market for more than they paid for them new. I don't know, maybe I'll wait for them to finally release an AWD plug-in hybrid, and I'll buy that.

What is crazy is that the maverick is still larger than our 1992 Chevy s-10. Same principle. Small, cheap, practical. The seats in the s-10 are cloth but have very nice stitching and are very comfortable (Tahoe edition). I absolutely love our s-10 and for the same reasons I love the maverick. Also, I love hybrids!

As for the seats... I guess I don't think they're uncomfortable at all? I drove my XLT Hybrid on a 2000 mile round trip over Easter weekend to see my sister, and I was perfectly comfortable. (Also -- Lane CENTERING is only available on the Lariat when the active cruise control is on, but lane keep assist is available on all trims if you get the 360 package. I have it, and it's never had a problem for me in the year and a half I've had the truck). But I'm also 6'3", so maybe things are just hitting me differently. The stereo software issues with the infotainment system that affects Carplay are well known. I've only had it happen once, but there's a reason most Maverick owners know the shortcut to reboot the radio to fix it (Hold down the Radio Power button and the Skip Forward button together for like thirty seconds).

The Ford Maverick was #1 on my list of potential vehicles to replace my 16 year old Honda CR-V whenever it conks out, but your review has me reconsidering it now. No other review that I've seen really mentioned the seat comfort and the glitchy wired Apple CarPlay and Lane Keeping Assist/Forward Collision Warning is concerning. Also the lack of AWD on the hybrid model is puzzling. Now I think #1 on my list is being occupied by the new Toyota Crown Insignia despite it being a total different vehicle from the Maverick and still brand new with only early prototype reviews out now.

You can keep on the air, and the car will only start if the battery needs charging, and then the engine will shut off. Since my X3 isn't a hybrid, it just burns fuel. This is great when I need to sleep in my vehicle: ie - going camping and pouring rain outside and I don't want to sleep in the tent, or driving 12 hrs and need a quick nap.

8:30 I think I understand how eCVTs work. The gas engine is given one overdrive gear, with the electric motors connected at a shorter gearing. At low speeds the motors handle your low gear and torque needs while the engine is your highway power. They should really call this the OVERDRIVE transmission, or "One-Range" transmission, some form of catchy exaggerated title lol

I bought a 2024 Maverick XLT 2WD 2.0 Ecoboost less than 1 month ago. This machine will outrun my old Chevy Silverado 350. Maybe not top end but certainly in a mile race. I'm 6' 2.5" tall and my left knee rest against the door and after a short time it does become uncomfortable. I've looked for an aftermarket pad that would go on the door but I haven't found one so far. I may have to buy a knee pad when my wife and I take it for a run longer than a couple of hours. You're right about the seats. They don't hurt me but they are like airplane seats. Getting out is a bit of a challenge. I move the steering wheel all the way in and in the highest position to make it easier to exit. Getting in isn't much of a problem. When I decided to make the deal I had two color choices, Cactus Grey or Cactus Grey. I don't like the blue or the red and the Maverick just don't look right in white. This is my 3rd new vehicle in my 71 years. My Chevy Silverado was my 2nd ever vehicle and it was 3 months shy of being 30 years old. My experience with my Maverick Lariat on a road trip are way different than yours and I traded my 2019 F150 Lariat for a Maverick. The seats are not as large and palatial as the ones in the F150 but it is a much smaller vehicles so Lazy Boy seats don't fit. Although smaller I found the seats to be very comfortable and supportive on a long trip and in short driving. Much better than seats in any older model of Toyota. I wonder what you think a small turbo charged four cylinder engine should sound like. I have owned a lot of four cylinder vehicles and you can't expect Cadillac smoothness or Hemi growl from any four cylinder engine. My Ecoboost Maverick sound great to me unless I am doing pedal to the metal acceleration. Even then it is not unpleasant to me. The Maverick is an economy vehicle in any trim so don't expect Rolls Royce appointments and sound levels. Some subjectives I can’t quantify in the review but not too bad. Some subjectives are fine but others aren’t since perceptions vary. Just because your short frame fits in the back seat fine doesn’t mean an average man or tall women will enjoy the experience. I fly a lot. The seats feel nothing like economy seats. They beat aircraft seats for comfort and support. Also, complaining about optional equipment makes limited sense being that this is a cheap vehicle (by current standards) and you can get it if you want it.
