2024 F1 Chinese GP QUALIFYING by Peter Windsor

Спорт

The non-stop action continued in Shanghai with qualifying for Sunday's Chinese GP. Fresh from his victory in the sprint race, Max Verstappen seized the pole for Red Bull, ahead of team-mate, Sergio Pérez, and Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso. McLaren and Ferrari are in the mix but it was a dismal session for Sir Lewis Hamilton, who failed to make it out of Q1 in his Mercedes.

@@mjv97 I don't dislike Lewis - while it is our choice to like or dislike whomever we wish, most of the negative comments about any driver are naive: some drivers just do a better job playing to the cameras and keeping their mouths shut. My favorite drivers turned out, as I learned more over time from their peers, to be the dirtiest drivers out there: Senna, Schumy, etc. I do agree with you about the rain. It was beyond cool to have a moment that was more about the driver than the car.

Could you comment on Ferrari's current struggle with warm-up. I understand you don't listen to the commentary, but you've missed that. Ferrari, for about three Grand Prix now, has been talking about finding a new strategy for their warm-up in Quali because they have not been able to switch on the Pirelli Softs in Sector 1 and the car seems to come to them in Sectors 2, and 3. Charles has also mentioned this over the last three Grand Prix's.

Hi Peter I think liberty and FIA need to scrap these rules. It's killing racing these DRS Trains. Cars are too heavy and big, Tires last 1 lap and are done. Engines sound like grass mowers. Bring back real racing from before hybrid Era! Boring race incoming today ! !

Yeah cause in the old days we had much better racing.... The cars were almost never near each other in those old era's. There were overtakes only because of different strategies which made overtaking often easy.

I picked a *literal* random race from back in those glory days: 1987 French GP. Qualifying: Nigel Mansell on pole, more than +0.5 ahead of the #2. But the race is really next level: Mansell #1, 7 seconds ahead of Piquet in #2, 55 (!) seconds ahead of #3, 1 lap ahead of #4; #5 at 3 laps, #6 and #7 at 4 laps, #8 and #9 at 6 laps. Only 9 cars finished the race. Yeah such racing, many competitive, wow.

@@AkilahHussain169 Then how come Alonso wasn't able to keep up with Hamilton and overtake him for the first 5-6 laps when he wasn't being attacked by Sainz, and Hamilton only managed to pull away from him? In an arguably weaker car as well, we can all see the pace Aston Martin has over Mercedes. A lockup during quali is a huge mistake, and it can lead to what happened today, but you can't be serious and argue that he is not up there with the others. Sainz also made a mistake today and smashed the car in the wall, but you can't say that he can't perform, look what happened when he got his second chance. Same for Perez, which finished Q1 in 15th.
