2024 F1 AUSTRALIAN GP Qualifying by Peter Windsor

Спорт

Max Verstappen's astonishing skill was on full display in Melbourne on Saturday when he extracted the maximum from his Red Bull RB20-Honda in the dying moments of qualifying.To the backdrop of ultra-sticky, soft-compound Pirellis that required both management and finesse, Max uniquely broke the 1min 16sec barrier on his final run. A Ferrari SF-24 joins Max on the front row - but it won't be the Charles Leclerc car; on the contrary, it was Carlos Sainz who superbly qualified second, ahead of Red Bull's Sergio Perez, the McLaren-Mercedes of Lando Norris and Leclerc. For Mercedes and Aston Martin-Mercedes, qualifying was disappointing: Mercedes will start P7/P11 (George Russell/Lewis Hamilton) and Aston P9/P10 (Lance Stroll/Fernando Alonso). Note: after this video was posted, Sergio Perez received a three-place grid penalty for impeding Nico Hulkenberg.
Peter Windsor analyses the day's proceedings.

    It is always good to see that experts are taking good note of Yuki's strong streak of performance since beginning of last year. He still need to mature as a driver but people also forget he is still one of the youngest drivers on the grid (despite being in his 4th year given how early he started). Danny quite simply needed to “turn it around” before he lost the McLaren drive. “The car being difficult to drive” or “the car not suiting his driving style” are not valid excuses. The best drivers in the world adapt, re learn. Dani ric had his chance and he blew it when he left the one team that suited his mentality of driving. It appears he convinced himself that the car must suit him. Rather than driver suit car. Even post quali interview the way he talks he blames the car without blaming the car “the car is improving we’ve brought a few adjustments but they just weren’t…” and stops himself. He mentally blames the car and setup for his lack of feel and confidence more often than not and that’s why he will never dig himself out of the hole he created when he left Red Bull.

  • @tak8261

    @tak8261

    @@TANGYHATCHY Fully agree. Maybe you can get away with "the car not suiting you" if you are new to the team but he has had plenty of time to adjust now. I of course do not know how he truly feels about the situation but the interviews do give a sense that he doesn't fundamentally think the fault is on him, which in itself is the issue. If he can't acknowledge that he is the one that needs to adjust, he never will.

    Question. Is a driver like Max, who feels every little thing wrong with the car, get the best out of Adrian Newey who looks for looks for perfection?

  • @theGoogol

    @theGoogol

    2 ай бұрын

    I think it's the other way around. Max allows Newey to design a fast-as-possible car because Max can drive it. In the past, Newey was limited by driver preference but now he can design a car that is so ridiculously sharp to drive (which is the fastest configuration). All Max's feedback can do each weekend is give feedback about setup, something Newey has no influence over but is on the race engineers to figure out and adjust.

  • @stz024

    @stz024

    2 ай бұрын

    @theGoogol that's sort of what i mean, Newey knows Max is going to feel those little things that get in the way of unlocking the full performance. So he designs a car jnowing Max can drive it. Obviously, it goes both ways, and i think they feed into each other. When i think back to blown diffuser days, i think Adrian designed a car with a super strong back end because that's what Seb needed to be at his best. It would be interesting to hear what driving style Newey would favour designing a car for, if it even matters to him at all.

But it's kind of special what Max does. It's almost as if he integrated the "fearless" part of simracing into his car. I think at some point, years ago, he said that sim racers don't know how it feels to drive the actual car, because they don't have to fear injury or death. But when you look at some of his pole laps, it almost seems like he uses that same mentality. Of course, when there's a huge crash, he'll definitely feel it. It's just that. I don't see that fearlessness in other drivers, even though they are huge risk takers. Don't get me wrong there.

    There was a point on Saturday when max went out and put in 3 yellow sectors, and at this point the commentators were already dismissing the lap (after the first 2 were yellow), but the final lap time was actually max’s fastest yet (& the commentators had already moved on). I thought that was a really good example of how Max does his thing - letting up in areas where he could go faster, but doing so would hurt the lap as a whole.

    Carlos is the ideal teammate for Verstappen, from a Red Bull perspective. He's not quite as good/fast as Verstappen or Leclerc ability-wise, but he is as consistent as Verstappen is (where Leclerc is very inconsistent and prone to error). Sainz would push Verstappen all the way and be there to capitalise on any mistake, and would win some races and provide a challenge (which Max has said he wants), but would ultimately end up finishing behind over the course of the season. A Verstappen/Sainz partnership next season would not only be a very strong pairing from a Red Bull perspective, but would bring more excitement at the front of the grid which Perez can't provide, as he's neither quick nor consistent enough.

  • @Drrolfski
    @Drrolfski2 ай бұрын

    Leclerc declared in his interview that he put on too much wing in Q3 which caused the oversteer. And Williams didn't have a spare chassis because they've been implementing an ERP system to oversee all their resources and planning. It's something other teams have had for years now. However implementing it is widely regarded as undergoing open heart surgery while running a marathon. You're basically turning your whole organization upside down (who were before that using Excel to keep track of thousands of parts) and the cost of that is that key spare parts weren't ready for the season.

    Yeah Carlos is the long term best option. But I believe the dude who got Ronaldo to Juventus is the same guy who got Hamilton to Ferrari. He just wants settled names even if they’re past their prime instead of younger talents who might surpass them. It didn’t work at Juventus and it won’t work at Ferrari. The point is also Lewis is a driver who has a small motivational bandwidth in which he operates superbly, if he doesn’t feel right it will show on the track. If he is slower than Charles he will just collapse. If he is quicker than Charles you just destroyed a 27-year olds career in favor of a guy past his prime who will retire in a couple of years. Long-term it’s a lose-lose situation. But then again the guy who got Hamilton in there has proven he is all about the short term.

  • @e2rqey
    @e2rqey2 ай бұрын

    One you've driven this circut quite a bit, it does have some real character. I'd say if there's one thing this circuit demands, it's stability on quick series of direction changes. Parts of the track like turn 3-4-5, especially the 11-12 complex, and then 14-15-16. They are pretty technical sections with quick direction changes that require serious commitment and little margin for error. Things like getting on the power perfectly coming out of 4 and through five, the braking for 11 and exit of 12 is such a tricky section. Especially since your exiting on the curb and the rear really wants to step out on you. It's so easy to get wrong if you are really trying to get every last tenth through their and don't brake way too much on the way into 11 to play it safe. Max's skill on the brakes was probably a big factor in how he was able to pull out that extra time over Perez. He's able to get the car perfectly set up going into and out of those technical sections that have a series of quick multi-corner direction changes. If you watch the Mercedes its clear that they are still struggling with the rear through these sections. Lewis probably still lacks the confidence with the rear to fully commit in those corner complexes, while of course George is all about taking that risk and committing ever when he isnt 100% confident with the rear. Thats what I think made the difference between George and Lewis in Quali.
