The newly redesigned Chevrolet Trax is almost a foot larger than the outgoing model and offers a tempting low price tag. We purchased the 2024 Chevrolet Trax 1LT for our test program, and discuss if the small price will compel buyers to look past the dull driving experience and uninspired cabin and overcome competitors including the Honda HR-V, Hyundai Venue, Kia Seltos, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, and Nissan Kicks.

I just purchased the exact same model with the exact same options as you reviewed. In fact even the same color. I just finished a 1000 mile trip with it. I think it is an absolutely fantastic car. In fact for the trip we averaged 38.3 mpg which was amazing. It rides nice, the seats were comfortable. Had no issues driving it on the highway. Very very pleased with my purchase.

What you guys (& some others) are missing is that the Trax is a small crossover -- front wheel drive is fine. you want AWD, get the TrailBlazer for a bt more; it's a mini-SUV. The Trax is lower, the TrailBlazer is taller w/ higher seating position. I think Chevy deserves credit for having BOTH of these cars.

I picked the FWD because I don't drive the little SUV in snow. Also it was cheaper and gets better gas mileage. I drive the RWD behemoth in snow. Buying with all bells and whistles? Better off leasing. Let somebody else keep up with or deal with the inconvenience of getting those things fixed or replaced when they fail..

Sigh. This could’ve been a more efficient, lighter, quicker, better-handling sedan or hatchback for similar or less money - a Sonic or Cruze. A nice design, but destined for Enterprise and low resale, like base soec Konas and Kicks.

CR has pointed out and proved a FWD vehicle equipped with winter tires is better in snow than AWD with all season tires....but people still rather drive AWD and that comes down to the difference in feel behind the wheel.

This. Price point. With used car prices still high, this makes so so much sense for a family to have this. Price-conscious buyers in a bind should go with this and enjoy driving under warranty. For many who are just in the market for a car to go from point A to B in an urban setting... this is a fantastic price point.

For those that complain about this not having AWD, Chevy offering this as a value proposition alongside the Trailblazer that has available AWD is no different than what Hyundai is doing by offering the FWD only Venue alongside the Kona. I think they also forgot to mention that the Trailblazer has more cargo room than the Trax as another difference between the two.

The money you save vs awd allows you to purchase true winter tires which will have a huge impact on winter whether traction. Trust me they make a huge difference, you will go in the snow, but don't forget you have to stop and go around turns and there as well they make a huge difference. I wish more people would try them and spread the word. We would all be better off as a result.

i own a 2024 Trax 2RS... have owned it for since May 3, 2023... the transmission discord that was discussed in this piece does kind of disappear at around the 2000 mile mark. Fuel economy hovers around 32-38mpg and I run premium fuel in mine (93 octane) as it is not only turbocharged, but direct injection. After 5800 miles here in the Adirondacks of New York and our superduper swell roads, the car still does not rattle or shake. I am, however, having trouble with the window switch for the left rear window. Dealer is addressing at the time of this posting. Other than that, I genuinely love this car and feel that it would've been a homerun with a manual transmission option. The car drives far sportier than it's market segment, especially on the 19" wheels and wide tires GM put at all four corners. The suspension issue that was discussed in the video I have never experienced. The car is super planted even on long sweeping on ramps. With long trips, i found that the lower seat cushion could've been a smidge longer, but that could just be me. I am 6ft 250lbs. Anyways...

That 93 octane gas is a TOTAL waste of money! That premium gas will DO NOTHING to help prevent carbon build up on the back of the intake valves! The better thing to do is use the LOWEST VOLATILITY oil to minimize the amount of crank case oil vapor the gets sucked past the intake valves. The best oil you can buy for a GDI engine is Pennzoil "ultra platinum" full synthetic (and no I don't sell the oil). I got this information from watching "Project Farm" YT channel. He tested ALL the leading oil, including Amsoil, and found that the Penzoil was BEST for DGI engines! Happy motoring in your new Trax!

It is only offered with FWD to keep the price down, to give it more interior room than the Blazer with a smaller size, and using older tech like a 6 speed automatic. Overall an interesting car and depending on sales it could be a winner (along with the Buick Envista which is its twin). My question to CR is what other car at this price is this good? Is the Nissan Kicks a better car or worse? I think they rank it lower. So I understand the complaints, but the price point makes it hard to hate this car.

I just bought a fully loaded Trax Activ and it's a great crossover - upgraded from a 2012 Equinox LTZ. Was looking at Blazer EV but current interest rates are terrible, even with great credit. Honestly, the fully loaded tech for 27k is a steal. This beats my old Equinox in every way, besides not having a rear cup holder and a part shortage which strangely resulted in the backup camera not giving warnings/beeps so try to snag one that does have rear park assist. Adaptive cruise control is amazing as is wireless android auto. In my phone settings I changed Android Auto to connect automatically and I've had 0 problems with connectivity. I also highly recommend the interior protection package, the mats fit snug and will protect your rugs in muddy climates.

With the Trax, GM has re-focused the purpose (existence) of Chevrolet: Provide a value, entry level vehicle (could be a first-time car buyer), who will eventually move to a Buick, then a Cadillac. In the late 60s after my parents married, their first car was a Bel Air. A few years later they bought a 77 Olds Cutlass, then a 1984 Buick Riviera, (mom got a 1990 Reatta) and then a 1994 de Ville. They (and many others) wouldn't have stayed in the GM family if their familiarity with the brand didn't start at the value purchase of a Chevrolet.

I drive a 2021 Spark, which is surprisingly good for what it is. I've used it for three long trips including recently from Phoenix to Los Angeles where it did great. (48mpg at one point and even saw three digit speed briefly) Consequently I don't care one bit about "driving dynamics" and pretending I"m a racing driver on the Nurburg Ring. The only things that matter when you are no longer 12 years old are comfort, reliability and can you afford it. The dealership has been pestering me constantly to "upgrade" to one of these ever since they came out. There are many things about it I like. I don't care about lack of AWD. AWD is a complete waste of money unless you live in Canada, Upstate, New York, Vermont, Alaska, etc where snow and ice are a real issue. Other than that it's just an expensive marketing gimmick. I note that this car seems to have the same issue my Spark has with wireless connectivity. I'm also Android and bluetooth will not maintain connectivity with the car. I have to re-connect almost every time I start the vehicle and it will sometimes disconnect while driving. Looks like it might be a GM thing. We have a Ford van at work which has never lost connection to my phone since the got it a year ago so It's a vehicle thing, not my phone. So I guess I'd be plugging in with the cable as well. The only thing that would really concern me about this vehicle is the inadequately sized engine utilizing a Turbo to try and compensate along with the wet timing belt. That alone makes me think of this vehicle as something you lease and dump before the warranty is up rather than own long term. i guess time will tell.

Many have said it- there is no such thing as a bad new cars. Yes, some are better than others, often in different areas, but overall, all cars are decent. Hybrids have higher fuel economy and better start/stop but have a CVT and higher starting price along with a battery replacement in 10-15 years. KIA’s are great cars to lease, Toyotas and Hondas are great for keeping it 10+ years (Toyota less with the subscriptions required). Some cars have higher safety than others. As a car… any modern new vehicle is going to get you from A-B for the most part. That is why vehicles are considerably more expensive now. Automakers have forced us to think we need expensive vehicles, AWD, high vehicles, big engines, 3 rows, beds, hitches, towing capacity, etc. We don’t. The automakers can suffer now- people who won’t buy it because it is not AWD.

VERY HAPPY WITH MY 1RS SO FAR. MY ONLY GRIPE IS THE INFOTAINMENT SYSTEM. MY PHONE SHOULD BE RECOGNIZED IMMEDIATELY UPON STARTING THE CAR WHICH SONETIMES IT DOES. BUT WITHIN 2 MINUTES, IT DISCONNECTS MY PHONE AND YOU MUST MANUALLY GO INTO THE INFOTAINMENT SYSTEM AND START IT AGAIN. ALSO, I ONLY GET MY SMS MESSAGES WHEN MY SCREEN IS IN THE NAVIGATION MODE. IT WILL NOT SHOW MESSAGES WHEN IN RADIO SCREEN. THAT NEEDS IMPROVEMENT

I like the design but I'm really against turbo engines. I wish they used a na 2 liter engine.

If this car had a Japanese, Korean or European logo on it, you guys would be gushing over everything about it. The fact that this comes from an American brand, you guys have to be overly critical. I'm totally fine with reviewers actually reviewing cars objectively, but there is a concerning trend over the years from car journalists to give foreign brands a free-pass on issues, while being absurdly nitpicky with American cars.

It's KOREAN built by GM KOREA! AND, CR is not a "car journalist" publication! CR gets paid by subscribers!

those two yong man saing wrong description of that car. this car is realy good!!! i used to drive european, asian, american cars. This is masterpiece for the price. Turbocharged 3 cyl 1.2l plus dashboard like from space x dragon lol. And i rader have nice durable plastic than fake wood vinyl. Its quiet! very nice dont hear engine when you drive. For small car likethat front weheel drive is perfect choice for safety as well. You only need to buy two winter tires in stead of four if you want. Thats what america needs simple, beautiful in both mechanical and visual design made in usa cheap cars. Perfect cant go wrong

Sadly, typical GM nonsense like not having any spare parts, literally, in stock and electronic gremlins like window motors failing VERY quickly, safety features not working well, etc. So far the drivetrain has been ok based on the forums that talk about this vehicle, so at least they did that well enough. With a turbo motor, I want a loooong warranty, you also don't get that with GM out of the gate, you'll pay quite a bit for a factory extended warranty, and this needs to be factored into the buying price, it could reach several thousands of dollars. I always wait and watch, especially on a first model year vehicle, and see how good or bad it is. For the money, this might be worth trying out if you add a good warranty on it.

I understand what they're saying, but I'm a teacher with my first kid on the way, and we're now a single income household. This is the only option for us, and I was impressed with what it came with for the price. Just wish I had more options

CR, your review is spot on. I have a '23 Equinox with the same 6 speed. It has the exact same hesitation issues you describe, kinda annoying. It also has wireless car play/Android Auto that has the same hiccups, also very annoying.
