2023 Volkswagen Amarok turbo petrol review (inc. 0-100 & braking)
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
This is the one we've been waiting to drive! The 2023 Volkswagen Amarok Aventura TSI452 is the turbocharged petrol version of the Amarok that shares a platform with the new Ford Ranger. Paul Maric gets behind the wheel to see if it's worth spending big to get this engine.

More petrol twincabs in the workhorse range are needed. Diesel motors have been suffocated by emissions laws. Petrol is the future for ICE.
@maxd4968
Жыл бұрын
I disagree. They would be less fuel efficient, run on premium fuels so it would cost more to run. The emissions are about the same nowadays there all bad.
@Robert-cu9bm

Diesels are far more efficient for work.
@tcmx712
Жыл бұрын
@Robert-cu9bm why does a diesel being more efficient for work make it better for a ute than a petrol??? You gunna be running a plow behind it or pushing up dirt with a blade on the front??? And don't say you need a diesel for towing a caravan as they aren't really that heavy compared to the tow vehicle unlike a roadtrain which needs a diesel to actually get moving, people have been towing with petrols for decades with no issue
@Robert-cu9bm
Жыл бұрын
@@tcmx712 What do you think a Ute is for? And towing diesel be petrol the diesel will be far more fuel efficient no matter the weight of the trailer.
@tcmx712
Жыл бұрын
@Robert-cu9bm modern utes are for driving around worksites and carrying tools or small equipment with some people using them as tow vehicles (which they aren't the best for either). Plus in all towing tests the petrol patrol uses the same fuel as the diesel 200 series??? Don't believe me research it. 20yrs ago no doubt diesel was the best option but these days the petrols have gotten so much more advanced that the advantages of diesel are negligible. Unless you're towing actual big loads (3.5t+ which these utes aren't designed for) petrol is better than diesel for the everyday driver
Awesome video. Can you do a comparison of the entry level models (not cheapest) but kindve entry like the Amarok life, ranger xls, hilux sr etc
My favorite channel Paul you are the best ❤️🇿🇦
Nice review. The 4-cylinder engine is great. Needs to be offered in Panamerican, or better still lower spec Amaroks. ie: Ones that have 18" ATs and Sports Bars as options so they can do some real work. To pay 89k on the road for it in Queensland is a lot! I'd have to spend another 10k to get it to compare with what my Amarok V6 Highline MY17.5 has. It came with sportsbars, and I bought roll'n'lock and Rhino Racks and ladder racks for another 10k. I doubt if you could even add some of these options to the Aventura. Ford really has got some better options in terms of capability across the range and configuration choices. Lots of QC issues with the rangers though. Lets hope VW don't have those ... Also why don't Ford offer this engine too?
Another wicked review, thank you 🙏

Just remember, every back up test is a great chance to do a J turn test too.
How do they stuff up something as basic as cupholders? The design team never sat in the buck and tested the ergonomics? The Chief engineer should be ashamed for signing that off.

I know it’s kind of off topic but my Mrs and her mother both have Kia sportages. The Mrs one is Diesel and her mothers is Petrol, and I’ve always been pro petrol for power smoothness and quick off the mark. But bloody hell the petrol version is a shit box compared to the diesel. The diesel is quicker off the mark and pulls like a 14 year old school boy, whereas the petrol dies in the arse. They are both the same model year and spec just ones petrol and the others diesel. And to add insult to injury the diesel is getting better fuel economy. Going back a bit I had a V6 petrol Hilux and was getting rounded up by the 3.0 diesel variants, which was bloody demoralising to say the least and to top that off I nearly had to tow a mini tanker around to keep the fuel up to it. That really sucked so I ditched that ute. I was shattered, my hopes for petrol being better were crushed!. There’s possibly plenty of other vehicles on the market where this is not the case but these are my personal experiances with them!
VW Ranger. Looks nice.
Drag race vs raptor?
Just need one of the double cab ute makers to bring out a punchy turbo petrol in a low spec model for around the 50-60k mark and watch them fly out the door. People are sick of the diesel Grenades costing them thousands and still being slow as shit. A base or low spec ranger with the raptor engine, 50mm lower suspension, some bright colours and trim… could even call it a xr6t… Watch them sell.
Rippin those 4 Motion stickers off !!!!
How much does it cost?
Fuel consumption is very bad on these new amaroks and rangers. My old model v6 amarok is a work Ute, ladders on roof 100% and Carry at least 500kg and uses 8.2l per 100km

I think the 4cyl option is great given all the DPF issues with Diesels. Great option for inner city families who want to explore over the weeks. I think VW need to offer this in lower spec. 21inch wheel is too large for a "ute" a vehicle thats designed to go off road at the end of the day. 17s or 18s with ATs would be more suitable. Styling is simple and refined. Not every ute has to scream rough and aggressive off roader

The best in my opinion, unfortunately Australia lives a asian cultura about cars , but for sure the driver handling sensation from Amarok is amazing.
It is a pity there are some fit and finish problems, this is what happens Vw when you let your main opposition build your cars.
The engine does not share its fundamentals with the Focus RS or FN Mustang, both of which have the Gen1 2.3L EcoBoost. The Amarok uses the Gen2 2.3L EcoBoost, which is also used in the SA Focus ST, and a 2.0L version is used in the current Escape

petrol FTW
This is $79,990 plus on road costs & the Ranger Raptor is $86,790 plus on road costs. The extra $7k for the Raptor is a no brainer! VW have priced the Amarok range far too high.
8:15 you would of course void your warranty "going to town" on mods.

I would love a petrol but not with 21 inch wheels. Useless for 4wdriving.
Whilst I thought it was your customary thorough review with no holding back, Paul, I'm not sure taking a brand new vehicle to somewhere with a laptop and a lot of attitude and little else to chip tune it is a good thing: firstly, if engine sound is important to me, I'll buy a car with that, not pay extra to have my warranty voided (does VAG have a lenient reputation regarding warranty claims?). Furthermore, I hardly expect a team of engineers who have worked for years developing the engine to have done such a bad job that a change of parts/programming will do anything other than hobble some other aspect of the engine. But to summarise: poor economy, poor quality of assembly, poor ergonomics in the cramped interior, poor suspension tune, fast in a straight line but without good enough brakes to stop it well. For $80k plus ORC plus the mandatory snorkel, bull-bar, winch, tow bar, driving lights, and suspension lift, it seems like rather poor value-for-money to me.
