Nothing changed with Toyota it seems. I traveled to New York and my Uber had 410k miles on his 2020 Corolla SE. He claims only issues was engine coolant bypass valve (700$) and and windshield motor wipers (300$) no other issues.

Making 300-600$ a day. Running the vehicle all day since just before covid. He claimed all he did for regular maintenance is oil changes every 15 days and transmission drain and fill every 45 days since he ran the vehicle 13-16 hours a day 6 days a week.

That newly-standard 2.0 liter engine is a game-changer, especially for the base model. All that extra torque, better performance, AND better fuel economy, too. A real win-win.

  • @naveenthemachine

Game changer? 😂It’s slower than a comparably priced Honda civic with the 1.5T and we’re not even talking about the Si. Not to mention the base civic is as fast as a corolla while being bigger and just as if not more efficient And the civic does literally everything better than a corolla. Once the upcoming civic hybrid comes in it’s over for the corolla

@@naveenthemachine it’s no game changer, but AWD and the hybrid (for now) are a huge plus for this segment. Although I wonder if Honda plans on bringing the hybrid in Hatchback only form or give the option of sedan. I hope they do since there is likely some People including me who are not the biggest fan of the hatchback styling, though it’s forgivable.

Here in Georgia (country) the base model Corolla is a 6 speed manual with a 1.6L 4cyl engine. Costs around 16K$. Dirt cheap and a great value for people who don't mind driving a manual. 18K$ for a CVT version and a little over 20K$ for a hybrid e-CVT.

Glad to see Cassie (sp) involved and of course the kids - brings back memories of when my kids were small. Nice to see these types of reviews. Though I'm much older now and the kids are all in college, it's good to see uploads with the family perspective (without the magazines or car manufacturers behind the scenes). Reminds me of the vehicles we went through as a growing family - either because of budget or need of space. Hope you continue to do these types of reviews every once in a while - not every family can afford the 75K $ plus vehicle every few years. I know we couldn't.

My civic has the sport mode which I have never used in the last 6 years I have owned it. And many of the features on the vehicle is an over kill for me. That only make the price higher. I've owned 33 cars in my life so far and the last 20 have been Acura/Honda. I have to say - Honda is falling off the cliff while Toyota has been killing it lately. The new Corolla is awesome with the 2.0 engine, looks great, very affordable even XSE and aamzing space/mpg. They still have V6 in the Camry. New Prius is awesome. And what is Honda doing? Killing off V6, killing off 2.0T, killing off all manual, there are no more traditional automatics on any of their sedans, etc. Most power you can get is 200hp in the Accord and so on. I can totally see myself in Toyota next time I need a car.

The M20A-FKS 2.0L engine is definitely impressive. SE/XSE trims always had this engine from the start. If you know how to drive extremely efficiently and use your momentum wisely, it almost doesn't justify the need of getting the hybrid model at all, IMO, unless your doing city driving almost exclusively. I've done 46 MPG (all highway) in not one, but three different SE Corolla sedans with this engine (one 2020 and two 2022s). It quite honestly embarrasses my 6-speed manual Mazda MX-5 ND2 soft top, of which I can do a "mere" 38 to 40 MPG if I really try... in a car that weights nearly 900 pounds lighter. The good news is once you start to hit about 38 MPG and above, (mathematically speaking) the law of diminishing returns really starts to take effect, meaning that 40 MPG really isn't all that different and far off from 46 MPG for example in the real world and missing that difference 6 miles isn't a deal breaker lol.

What gets me watching these reviews is the 2.0 liter with 169 HP has existed the entire 12th generation of Corolla. It was exclusive for the SE and XSE trims only. The only difference for 2023 is now all the Corolla trim levels get them which is fine but if they were going to give the LE and Hybrid trims a boost the SE and XSE should have also gotten a power boost to at least 200 HP. This car looks too good to only have 169 HP. I currently own a 2021 Corolla XSE in Barcelona Red. It’s my favorite color, I had a 2020 SE with the same engine as well. I love almost everything about this car except for the lack of power. Not much changed for the refresh but I still very much love this generation of Corolla. The difference between this car and mine is the upgraded headlights, grille, start up chime/turn signal chime and new gauge cluster with now wireless Apple CarPlay.

I really wanted to buy this car. I drove it and the CVT transmission is absolutely terrible. I went with a Mazda 3 instead. Such a better driving car. Handles way better, a lot quieter, and it actually has some torque. Plus leather, heated seats, and the 12 speaker Bose stereo are very nice.

Mazda3. Don't get me wrong, recently corollas are looking sharp, what kills me is the fact that they are only reliable compact vehicles with nothing else to offer. I might consider the corolla hatchback someday with a turbo motor and better handling. By the way I'm not a 20 year old kid lol, I'm 48 I just need my vehicle to feel alive when I'm driving. I will never argue Toyotas excellent quality and reputation, the bad things that other Japanese and Korean companies are catching up to them.
