2023 Suzuki S-Cross Ultra Review: Good, Honest Value [Car Obsession]
In the UK we live in a time where everything is going up and value for money is becoming increasingly hard to find. So, surely getting a well-kitted out car for a sensible amount of cash is impossible? That’s not the case if you’re looking at this, the new 2023 Suzuki S-Cross, a crossover that won’t leave you cross over the price tag - see what I did there?
Now, seeing as I’m looking to demonstrate the value of this car, let’s start off with some numbers. The range of the new Suzuki S-Cross is refreshingly simple as there are just two trim levels to choose from, and one engine. You can either have the Motion trim level, which starts from £24,999, whilst the Ultra starts from £29,799. For comparison, a range-topping Nissan Qashqai is over £40,000.
Even though the Motion is technically a ‘base model’ there’s nothing basic about its features as it offers 17” alloys, LED headlights, smartphone connectivity, traffic sign recognition, blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alert, seven airbags, adaptive cruise control, keyless entry, heated front seats, dual zone climate control as well as front and rear parking sensors. That’s all as standard.
However, if this happens to be a bit…minimalistic for your liking, you can have the Ultra, which is what I’m testing here. This adds 17” polished alloy wheels, leather seats, navigation, panoramic roof, a 360 degree camera as well as Suzuki’s Allgrip Select all-wheel drive system.
A 6-speed manual comes as standard on both cars, but if you give Suzuki £1,350 extra you can get 6-speed automatic instead. One potential drawback of the S-Cross is that it does only come with the choice of one engine, which is actually the same one used in the Swift Sport. It’s a 1.4 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol offering 129hp and 235Nm of torque.
At this point I would normally tell you the performance stats, but I sense you’re more interested in how frugal it is. As standard, the 1.4 petrol engine is backed up by a 48V mild hybrid system, which makes the S-Cross more efficient as well as assisting with power when accelerating.
On a combined run Suzuki state that you can expect up to 53.2mpg, with CO2 emissions coming in at 120g/km. It is worth mentioning that if you go for this version the automatic all-wheel drive version the fuel economy falls to 46.3mpg and CO2 emissions of 139g/km. So far then, the S-Cross looks like it will be kind to your wallet, but is it pleasing to drive?

Recently changed to one of these from a Vitara for my wife’s daily. The extra boot space (Vitara is 375ltrs) and leg room is a welcome extra. It is definitely better on fuel despite both were the mild hybrid allgrip versions. Visibility is notably better in the S-cross as is the ride comfort, as mentioned handling not as direct as the Vitara but more than adequate. Great value for money as stated and with Suzukis robustness and down to earth approach is a great car. As ever enjoyed your review and take on this. Keep it up.

We found similar between Vitara and S-Cross too, so we choose the S-Cross, although the Vitara Sport was a lot of fun, but an overly harsh ride imho. The S-Cross feels a bit more grown up🤔🤔

I take it the Vitara was a non hybrid and the s cross is a hybrid? Outside of that there's no reason the s cross would be more efficient. It's the same drive train after all. Have a Vitara turbo myself. It's slightly more fun to drive than the s cross and I've yet to find myself wanting for the extra space. Both are great vehicles, just depends what your priorities are.

Many petrolheads are going the route of having a car like this for the daily commute and a fast modern classic for weekends. Thats where cars like this makes sense. It reminds me of my Peugeot 2008.

Since my first suzuki which was a ignis 2001. I have always had them ever since, they are honnest cars, i currently have suzuki liana estate 2004 now has nearly 185k miles and still runs amazing. I serviced it every 2 years and rescued many other cars with it, i bought it from a salvage yard 7 years ago for £230 with a failed m.o.t, i spent £130 on it inc price of m.o.t and it passed every single year there after, only ever asked me for is a thermostat and clutch. Now thinking of something a little more up to date for a change so might consider this next year. Thanks for helping me make my decision 👍.

Got this for an year now, 6 speed manual. Drives a little more better then the auto and it can do mild off roading, forrest road and snow. This has basically 2 rivals, the Dacia Duster and the Ford Puma. Dacia is not that refined, has worst interior materials and it poorly build and engineered (no mud protection for the back wheels, you can see the chassis, and drum brakes for the rear wheels on a 1.5 car, loaded, and I can go on ). And the Dacia was 25k, Suzuki, 21k so.... The Puma is smaller and hasn`t AllGrip at all, not even optional. And the engine is a 3 cylinder. The S Cross is a very honest car if you don`t option out on the sun roof or leather seats, premium sound system, this with the All Grip can go under the price of any rival.

Hi Arun, Do you think that the previous 1.4 Boosterjet S-Cross (all grip or 2WD) has better handling, more akin to a Swift? Or are they similar (being as this is a facelift but with tech and engine tweaks)? How was the auto box, I've not tried a Suzuki auto🤔🤔 We've got a Swift and bought the S-Cross, 1.0 Boosterjet (2019) on the back of your review (for that face lift version) and a good test drive, plus a cracking fun deal. Looks like Suzuki have crept up in price though, leaving the segment to Ssangyong and Dacia?

I'll be honest, it's been a VERY long time since I drove the previous S-Cross, so almost impossible to draw any definitive comparisons between the two. Reference price, all new cars are creeping up in price unfortunately. Thanks for watching.

I really liked this car, but for "only" 1600 € more I got the Mazda CX 30 instead. The Mazda CX30 may be less practicle than the Suzuki S-Cross, but it is way more confortable for the driver.

@@strangermaniacos686 Not if you compare with the same equipment. The numbers are right in front of me : - S-Cross fully equiped was 24.425 € - CX-30 SkyActive G Business was 26.600 € The difference is 2.175 € (roughly 1.800 € excluding VAT). The only equipment missing in this CX-30 is the leather seats, but it has the "head-on display".

Hi there, thanks for the questions, see below. Does the panoramic sunroof open ? Yes, please refer to 5:53 in the video. Does it have a 360 degree camera - should be mentioned under the the Pricing and Specification chapter, but yes it does. Does it have Apple & android play? should be mentioned under the the Pricing and Specification chapter, but yes it does. How easy is the touchscreen navigation to operate ? I did a separate video for the touchscreen, which can be watched here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/i4R6o86Kk9q2kbw.html What Size is the the touchscreen ? I must concede, I don't think that was mentioned, which is unlike me - it's nine inches. Is the speedometer dial or digi You should be able to see the speedo now and then on the video - it's analogue
