Huge respect to the IIHS for testing out the safety of vehicles.

@@Fix_It_Again_Tony yea, if you look up IIHS dateline, you can see some older clips from the late 90's and early 2000's, showing how cars did back then back then auto makers hated the iihs and told them that their tests were too extreme but nowadays at one point or another, most automakers use them as a form of advertising

@titaniac30 Back when Dateline was good and interesting now, it's just about true crime all the time.
Shoot, that rear passenger seatbelt definitely is the reason for the Marginal grade for this test. The rear passenger seemed to be way too loose and floating around way too much.
Nice to see the next round of testing! Thanks for keeping us safe.
IIHS recently had a post/article about this, I think, in connection with some re-testing they did for small SUVs. It seems like some of the more advanced seatbelt technologies that manufacturers use for front-seat passengers aren't always implemented in the backseat likely for cost savings. So backseat passengers don't always have the pretensioners and force limiters for their seatbelts that front-seat passengers get. I'm not sure that's what happened here, but it looks like it given how much better the front seat passenger's seatbelt operated.

sir this is a large suv

@@Vanguard.I Sire, no one has said the Rivian isn't a large SUV. My liege, it is undoubtable that the Rivian was not among the small SUVs included in the specific test group IIHS was discussing in its post, because it is not a small SUV, forsooth, but the comments released by IIHS about *why* the small SUVs failed the re-testing with regard to cost cutting with regard to rear seat passengers' seatbelt systems and their absence of pretensioners and force limiters seems applicable to the Rivian's test results too, its elsewise largeness notwithstanding, m'Lord. Excellency, if it is clear that manufacturers engaged in cost cutting with regard to rear seatbelt systems with regard to their small SUVs because no one had hitherto been testing rear seat passenger dynamics in previous crash tests, I humbly offer that the manufacturers may have engaged in similar cost-cutting for their medium-sized and, I might dare say, their large SUVs alike.

@@alexbrown9351 nga i aint readin allat, why the fuck u talking about small suvs in a crash test of a *LARGE* suv
It looks like the pretensioners fire kinda late which probably contributes to the high chest injury measures.

@@directorjustinnot always bigger crumple zone is generally alot better the stopping quickly part kills you and in smaller lighter car the steering wheels and a pillar meeting you does that.
The car itself actually looked pretty solid , it would appear the rear passenger floating around a bit might have effected the score ?

That's what they're updating for the test. Previous version only looks at the driver.

If you look closely, you can see that dummy in the back moved Far too forward from the original position including the pelvis, Resulting in high risk of the head hitting the front seat, while also risking high the abdominal injuries because of the belt stucking in between the abdominal area of the dummy during the crash. Measurements also shows that there was high amount of force recorded to the chest part of the dummy in the back. So be sure you didn’t eat that much before sitting in the backseat 👍
Did the back seat belt rip out during?
It looked good. Interesting to see why the marginal rating.

What an unfortunate surprise!
Marginal rating because this New test looks for rear passenger injuries from “submarine effect” meaning that in a frontal crash the seatbelt slips from the hip to the abdominal area

Probably also to see if the seatbelt are as safe as the front seats too, many just lock or some are poorly calibrated like this one
rivian needs to improve the rear passenger seatbelts.

It's crazy that modern manufacturers, making very expensive, brand new, recently designed vehicles, having all of the requirements to achieve a "Good" score from the IIHS, can still fail so miserably like this.
