2023 PSE Dominator duo 40 M2 compound bow review

Спорт

PSE Dominator Duo 40 M2 is 5.2# mass weight, draw length 27-31", IBO 340, Axle to Axle 40", Brace Height 7 1/4"
We shoot the Dominator Duo over a Chronograph, we then shoot the Dominator at 18m. We discuss how the Dominator compares and feels to other PSE Bows and we compare the Dominator with other Manufacturer bows.

Would it not make sense to try the bow yourself to see how you feel? I'm not sure how one can decide on a purchase based on what someone else says. A teaspoon of sugar maybe too sweet for one person and not sweet enough for another. If you're able to, test it yourself and make up your own mind

Don't forget the S2 cam in the middle. The pattern is definitely that you shoot high let off bows that have a neutral bare balance better when testing them as bare bows. You consistently shoot low let off bows worse, but this isn't surprising. With the extra holding weight, they very much need additional mass on the bow to sit still and for the shots to break smoothly. Without that mass, the additional force required to pull into the wall makes them twitchy and opens the groups up a lot. It's the same for me too, but low let off bows allow more weight on the stabs as you are pulling harder and so can hold that mass up. Assuming one is conditioned for it, low let off bows often shoot more accurately and in a more forgiving way for seasoned archers. High holding weight and low mass really is a bad combo and so I am not surprised to see these bows underperforming for you at 18m. I get the impression that many people are a bit underwhelmed by the Dominator Duo. Its knocking on Hoyt prices, but doesn't give anywhere near the same impression when it comes to build and finish. The PSE is rather utilitarian in comparison and offers fewer features for only a slightly lower price. All the top archers that PSE has signed in the last few years has completely changed the price point of most of their bows. It's a shame. But if they want to charge these prices, IMO they need to step up their game and produce bows that have more of a high end build and finish.

Sorry but that's not what's happening. Steve clearly has his pointer finger touching the riser at all times, a sling will do nothing and are used by beginners so they don't drop a bow due to not knowing the correct hand grip. Yes he may be grabbing the riser after the shot occasionally but that is likely due to the bow trying to jump forward due to a lack of stabilisers.

If you look at my hand before the release you will notice my hand is moving. I just was not as steady. Some of it is body position. I did not feel very comfortable with it. I felt my should not in the right position. The draw felt a tad short. When the bow hits the valley is shakes my aim. Saying that I think I shot good with the Full Throttle but I am not as comfortable shooting it. The PSE Inertia was the same. I would shoot the Inertia well but I did have some bad shots with it. If you find the 75% setting very aggressive, the 70% and 65% are going to be much more so. I tried 65% mods on the Supra Focus XL and it was (IMO) horrendous (I really liked the 75% mods, but wanted more holding weight). The 65s were *much* more aggressive than Mathews 70V or the Hoyt SVX. It wasn't the holding weight as such - that was fine - it was the way it came in and out of the valley. It was kinda binary: 'on' or 'off'. Either in the valley or not. And the valley was about 1mm wide - a super narrow 'notch'. So if you relaxed a hair - breathed even - the bow would go from 19/20lb holding weight to 60 in a nanometre. Both the 70V and SVX start pulling and let you know you're coming off the wall (albeit in very different ways). I have a feeling the 70% and 65% settings on the M2 cam are going to be somewhat similar to the EM 65% mod. i.e. unusable for most people. You saying that the bow clearly 'drops' into the valley at 75% isn't a good sign. This cliff edge profile is what makes it a handful and what makes reducing the let off especially problematic.

@@NPC-fl3gq Steven is a 75% guy, preferring bows with a decent valley. 65-70% isn't for everyone and certainly if you don't shoot them a lot, its going to be a really handful and punish you on the scorecard. Shoot a lot, with lots of weight stacked on your long rod, low let off really can be an amazing experience assuming you have a vey strong and active shot style. However, archers who shoot 75-80% and have a relaxed, low-tension shot will find such bows a bit of a nightmare. This does not make Hoyts bad. It just means that the SVX cam has always been pitched at a certain kind of archer. The DCX was much easier to draw, softer wall etc, but either 65% or 75%. I think Steven shot the 65% DCX on the Invicta. Most Hoyt pros chose the SVX (or 65-70% setting on the HBT cam) and Mathews pros the 70V for a reason.

At the time of this review I kind of thought maybe I might try a shoot through riser. This bow had so many options, but not one option was a nice anodized finish like the past. This one is just blah paint. The absolute biggest reason it turned me away. Then came the word of a new Shootdown Pro to release in Vegas. Oh so excited, love my Shootdown. Thought no matter what I’ll buy it. Listed as a target bow, but with hunting features and marketed as a dual purpose bow. Okay whatever, I don’t want or need that front Picatinny rail and the unsightly holes for it, but I can deal. Come to find out it comes in same blah colors including camo. Oh such a disappointment. So the dealer calls PSE to see if the custom shop would do a nice custom anodized finish kind of like your Full Throttle Steven. The answer was “absolutely no, we don’t do that anymore”. So I talked to the dealer again after the official release. Hey I really like this bow can they do one of their std anodized finishes maybe? No word yet. I even thought screw PSE and the warranty, I’ll just have a 3rd part do it. But seen your reviews on the Mybo Revaluation and bows like the Elite Verdict and thought they looked nice. Maybe drop PSE all together and try something else after decades of being brand loyal. That is where I’m at now. Waiting in limbo wondering if PSE is willing to do anything or should switch.

Understand comments re long riser/short parallel limb bows being "dead in hand"; like Mathews, Prime, the new Elite Verdict etc, but there are many well experienced pro archers influencing bow design preferring these forward mounted limbs that offer some shot feedback for target bows; such as Hoyt, Mybo, PSE, Bowtech etc.etc. Nice to now have choices. Same goes with 40" target bow ATA. I for one prefer shorter target bows. Just how much of an improvement is this new PSE is over previous models ? Hmmmm.

I think forward facing vs. parallel just comes down to personal preference on feel. Some prefer apples and some oranges. I think it will remain so, so manufacturers will probably continue to offer both. Both Hoyt (with Stratos) and Mybo (Revolution) appear to be trying to strike a compromise. What I did notice is that after long sessions with my SF XL, I could feel it more in my bow elbow, as the bow as some hand shock. Don't get that with my TRXs.

Shot feedback is important and a very target (proper target not just indoor shooting) thing to retain. I was just shooting a state championship on Sunday and because my Citation has proper feedback I knew to the millisecond I was going to hit a low 8/9 liner. Elite is a more 3D orientated company and that reflects their bow design. If you have a shooter like David Cousins on your staff, you're going to get a very classic design, in the same way Jesse Broadwater turned the Invicta into a more classic target bow.

It depends on the Engineers and the feedback they get from pro shooters. But I think sales will drive bow design. Back a few years ago everyone was the bow should be made for the exact draw length to maximize performance. But that is not very flexible. I think the trend right now is shorter limbs, longer risers and more adjustability. I use to like PSE 2 piece quiver. Certainly interesting the Hoyt Stratos has rollers on the cable slide.

I must be the only one that prefers a deflex riser. I see most of the hunting and some target bows with their reflex designs and just dislike most of them.

PSE paint jobs are horrible! Bowtech paint jobs are just as bad! Both start to wear around the grips first! And whatever you do don’t bump them into something!
