2023 Porsche 992 GT3 RS | First Track Impressions

Here are my initial track impressions on the 2023 992 Porsche GT3 RS.
I was able to chase one down at COTA using a GT4 RS and was surprised by its speed and computer selected wing settings (DRS).
Thanks for watching :)

To be honest, everything you said the 3RS “should” be able to do, it certainly can do. The car seemed to just be driven below its limit. I was a part of a MotorTrend article last year at Road America where we broke the production car lap record in a 992 3RS. I also drove my personal GT4RS back to back with the 3RS (both videos on my channel). The differences are frankly massive. Apart from the 4rs having higher top speeds on the straights, the 3RS destroys the 4rs everywhere else, while also being easier to drive at the limit. The lap times were about 4 seconds apart, both with the same driver (me) and both with brand new Cup 2 R tires. The 4rs is a better street car for obvious reasons and is more fun in my opinion, but there is no question that the 3RS is far more capable. I’ve driven all generations of cup cars including the 992, and the 3RS is the closest thing to that I’ve ever driven. Hope this helps.

Good to hear. I expected it to be way faster than the 4RS so I was disappointed to see its initial pace on the track. What is your take on the operation of the DRS system. Can it be set to default to closed and only open when the button is pushed?

@@ItsTrackTimeif both cars are being pushed to their limit, the 3RS is much faster. Regarding the DRS, there are two modes. Either you can leave it up to the car to decide when to open, or you can push the button. If you watch my lap, I opted to do it myself. However, once I get back on the brakes, the car closes the DRS, so all I had to do was tell it when to open. I believe the algorithm the car uses is more complicated than just open when floored and close when braking. The speed, level of steering input, and braking force in pretty sure is taken into account. That may be why you saw the 3RS braking but the DRS did not close. I’m pretty sure the Nurburgring lap time was set while leaving the DRS in “auto” mode, so however it works Porsche certainly trusts it.

@dimitridimakos7129 That makes more sense. Later in the weekend I was around two more of them and they always had the flap closed so it appeared to be in the other mode. If I was driving the car I would leave it closed and only push the button on the front and back straights at COTA. Thanks again for the great info and I'm now following your channel!

I've driven a 4rs and 3rs on the same track and it's not close. A pro driver at thermal North/South can do 2:15. In my 3rs I did 2:10s on street tires; pro driver in a 992 cup with slicks does 2:07. I also find it easier to drive stock for stock, as the 4rs is very nervous in heavy braking. it's just clear from your video you're much better than the 3rs driver.

I own one! In track mode you can override the computer! The computer doesn’t know where you are on the track so it will default to the open position and close when it senses brake pressure. If the guy was too easy on the brakes then that why the wing took a second to close. I don’t have any video of mine but I run mine manually. Basically I keep it closed all the time and I open it when I need it. It will close once the brakes are applied! Another technique that works great!! Example approaching the esses at VIR you want the wing open coming out of t5 when getting close to the esses you can tap The brakes and the wing will close or just press the DRS button. Great driving and great observation! 👍🏼👊🏼

That is exactly how I would want to use it. Push to open on the straights and when the brakes are applied "quickly" close it. Very cool you were able to acquire one and are actually using as intended!

You are a better driver. That the GT 3 RS was catchable says something about the other driver, not the car.

The GT3 RS is undoubtedly an awesome car but most weekend warriors can't even exploit 50% of it's potential.

This is kind of a odd review from the cockpit of another vehicle. I think it's more likely he's driving a 500k machine around and not confident in driving it to it's limits yet. The suspension dampening requires some laps as well to get it dialed in for each track.

I'm not sure what was going on the the green GT3 RS's wing, but here are two videos I made in my GT3 RS at COTA. The first video has the rear view larger so it's easier to see (but disorienting to watch): kzread.info/dash/bejne/n4ZnuMiBZs2pdcY.html The 2nd video is the same lap but the front view is larger so it's easier to watch (but harder to see the wing open and close): kzread.info/dash/bejne/iahqm4-uhtG3hZc.html You can see in these videos the wing is doing what it should pretty well. This is from the GT silver GT3 RS with red wheels that was also at Schnellfest in February 2024.

The algorithm exhibited on your car seems more sane. I still think I would prefer to have it always closed until I push the button on the back straight, and then immediately close when I hit the brake. Having it auto open below 100mph doesn't seem to make much sense given the drag is very low. I would rather have consistent downforce on a 911, and only when I'm going for top speed, open the wing.

The GT3 RS is not being driven in track mode, so the wing remains open unless being used for “heavy” braking. My guess the driver is either not familiar with with the track, still running the car in or has not got to grip with aero effect cars. It can be quite hard to recalibrate your mind that the faster you drive the more grip you get. At least they are driving it on the track and enjoying themself rather than being parked up in a garage!

That would explain what I was seeing and yes I always prefer to see these used on the track rather than parked at my local grocery store! In fact I die inside a little every time I see one of these driving around on the street - what a waste of an allocation.

not sure how you can judge the performance of such a car, when clearly the driver is driving at a intermediate pace at best. Put a better driver in it, and likely this car will be breaking some records on that track.

Agreed, but pinning the throttle on the back straight is not hard and this car clearly doesn't have the top speed of other $500K cars. I'm hoping Porsche breaks out the 4.2L for the next GT3 RS.

It is obvious that the GT3RS would not bring well driven. A good driver would be closing the DRS in all the corners and destroying the GT4RS in them. It shows that the driver skill matters. This one was not being driven anywhere near its capabilities.

First you have to get the DRS in the right setting - Which this car didn't. Then you have to trust the downforce will be there - Which this driver didn't

@@ItsTrackTime it was just pretty clear that the driver was not experienced with the car because they were there was no way you would be able to keep up with 992 GT3RS with an experienced very good driver as that car just has so much down force. More than a GT3 Cup car. But like anything else in driving, the driver is a big part of the equation. And you made the difference.
