Cost of living in the Philippines varies greatly upon where you live and your lifestyle. Undoubtedly prices are rising quickly due to the influx of foreigners and world inflation. Tourist areas and densely populated areas like Manila and Cebu City can be more expensive than living in California. If you plan on living a mostly “western” lifestyle (food, travel, medical, housing, etc….) things can get very expensive quickly. If you live a mostly modest “Filipino” type lifestyle, you can easily live on $1k/month. I plan to do a mix. I will travel, but not like I’m always on vacation. I’ll eat western food, but also Filipino food. In Some of the provinces you can get some very fresh and very cheap seafood. I plan to have solar. My biggest concern is medical. Right now you can get decent coverage for less than $2k/year. Who knows what it will be going forward. Our plan is to have our house built and paid for, a car that’s paid for, and solar that’s paid for. We also plan to have an emergency fund. We already own land in a few different places so if prices go up we can sell some of it.

smart!!! paid housing, car, solar is the best move along with lands for investments… I did the exact same thing although I won’t be retiring for another 20 years or so lol you can never go wrong preparing early. the biggest expense will be medical insurance and by then, the budget should be more than enough 😊

I Googled cost of livings Philippines VS Thailand. I found the electricity is three times more expensive in the Philippines and condo rent is about double. Fast Internet is also cheaper in Thailand. Since rent and utilities are my main expenses. I decided that I am better off in Thailand.

Good day Gary and thank you for looking at ATP, viewing this video and providing your findings. Your pretty much spot on regarding electricity as I used to pay $35 in Thailand and now pay $83 in the Philippines. Regarding monthly rental rates, I used to pay $465 - $500 in Thailand for a one bedroom 42 sqm condo and now pay $225 and have a three-bedroom 65+ sqm townhome. And internet in Thailand I used to pay $16 and now pay $26. In America, rent would now cost me $800 - $1,700 monthly and one reason I have no desire to return there. Most of our time has been spent in Davao (that’s where the wife is from) but the prices are getting out of hand. Close but outside of Cebu has also been a consideration I just didn’t know what cities to look at. Thanks for sharing and take care. Jake

Good day Jake and thank you for looking at ATP, viewing this video and commenting. Its always good to be learning about other places and having options. I’ve heard many nice things about Davao and the beauty of that region. When I came here last year one main reason I shied away from Mindanao was the U.S. State Departments Level 2 Travel Advisory for that region and news of hostage taking and terrorist threats. It’s probably very safe in Davao but I like to get out and see the sights in the back country and I felt for me I just couldn’t do that and feel safe so I decided on the Visayas region. Living in Naga, you save an hours drive if you are going south to the tourist attractions compared to living in Cebu City. And from here you can get to the Moalboal, Kawasan Falls, Oslob, Osmena and Casino Peak, and other wonderful attractions in about a two-hour drive. I’ve also heard many good things about Dumaguete, Negros Oriental. Another good thing about being here in Cebu is that you can get to Bohol and Negros Occidental rather quickly and cheaply. And a one-hour flight to Manila so you really have a lot at your finger tip here in Cebu. I’m glad you found this video informative and you might want to also look at my latest 2024 Cost of living video and see the two-year comparisons. Your channel looks very nice and also informative and I hope after a few more years I’ll earn a fraction of the subscribers you have. 🙂🙂 If you have not already done so, please subscribe to ATP to receive future information like this. I totally agree about Davao. My first trip there I too noticed the threat level but "risked it all for love" lol. Actually in my research at that time it revealed most (not all) threats occurred outside of Davao City proper. I do feel safe in Davao and have been many times but I do feel "boxed" in. As the wife says I'm safest only going North and East out of Davao which doesn't leave me as much ground to explore. I've spent some time in Cebu as well, stayed at the Quest Hotel and really enjoyed Cebu. I do like Cebu for all of the points you made. I just have to find the right spot outside of the city as I am a country or province boy at heart (originally from Mississippi) But I like being close to the city for the times that we would want to go for a movie or a western style dining experience etc. Thanks for mentioning your updated budget video I will check that out. I keep watching these type vids to reinforce my idea of early retirement. Wife keeps telling me "as long as we have 2k USD passive lets just go" lol. We've lived there before on 1800-2k and felt just fine. We are completely over the culture here in the US, especially w/ young kids and what is accepted as normal. That said, we are slowly but surely prepping our life here for an exit to the PH. Thanks for the kind words about our channel. Hoping we can get back to regularly vlogging and cont to grow it. Your channel as well is putting out great info and should too grow exponentially! We did sub and like! Thanks again and take care, Jake

Hi Jake and thanks for subscribing to ATP. Yes, I’ve heard from many and also read that Davao City proper is relatively safe and I think that stems from Rodrigo Duterte serving as mayor for more than 22 years (seven terms) and establishing a firm grip on the rule of law. And now following in his footsteps is son Sebastian Duterte to maintain that level of peace and safety. With Marawi only 175 - 200 km away, it seems your wife’s advice to travel north or east is good guidance. I believe you will be able to live fine here on your stated 1,800 - 2,000 budget and not feel pinched and I wish you the best in your retirement planning as it sounds like you are on a good glide path. I’ll be starting a new real estate series in the near future that you might find informative and give you some ideas of the surrounding Cebu areas. Stay tuned. Thanks again for subscribing Jake! Very interesting, I was stationed at Clark Air Base, Philippines 🇵🇭 back in 1991. The American dollar to Philippines 🇵🇭 Pesos rate is the best as compared to Canada 🇨🇦 and Australia 🇦🇺 living in the Philippines 🇵🇭 . To apply for American military 🪖 Philippines 🇵🇭 sponsored SRRV program. You need $1,000 American dollars 💸 per month . The Philippines 🇵🇭 average is $350 dollars per month. Most Americans who retire in the Philippines 🇵🇭 with $1,509 dollars 💸 or more can live a good life in the Philippines 🇵🇭. About over 100,000 Americans live in the Philippines 🇵🇭. About 19,000 are retired there. I am age 61 and a widower. My children are grown and have children too. I hope to live again in the Philippines 🇵🇭 and retire there. Thank you for this information video.

Good day David and thank you for looking at ATP, viewing this video and providing a very informative comment for our viewers. Since your assignment at Clark in 1991 The Clark Freeport and Special Economic Zone (CFEZ) was implemented which has transformed the city of Angeles and the provinces of Pampanga and Tarlac. The Special Resident Retirement Visa (SRRV) Expanded Courtesy program is a fantastic Philippine visa option for foreign nationals 50 years old and above, who are retired Armed Force officers of foreign countries with existing military ties and/or agreements with the Philippine Government. A monthly pension of at least US $1K and an SRR Visa deposit of US $1.5K are required. I agree with you and do believe you can live comfortably here for $1.5K to $2K a month. You should plan a trip back here and see if it is enough to help you decide to retire here. I spent five years in Thailand and now consider Philippines my retirement residence. It’s hard to explain but I feel at peace here and have no desire to return to the US. I thank you for subscribing to ATP and appreciate your viewership and time. Thank you for your service to country and I wish you a wonderful retirement. 🙂🙂

Good day Michael and thank you for looking at ATP, viewing this video and commenting and I’m glad you have found it informative. Those living on $3K a month are living the high life (IMHO) as I’m doing quite comfortably here at less than $1.7K monthly. You ask a tough question as there are so many variables to this equation. Not knowing your age or present health status are key elements to self-insuring. I would certainly think that 100K Canadian dollars would cover any minor/major health issues that required medical attention. I have taken the position that should I end up in the hospital for what ever reason, I’d expect to pay out of pocket $3K - $10. After paying health insurance premiums for five years in Thailand that exceeded $12K and never going to the hospital one time, I made the decision to self-insure last September. I just uploaded my 2024 Philippine Cost of Living video today that you might find helpful. If you have not already done so, please subscribe to ATP to receive future information like this. Good day “Fighter for Justice” and thank you for looking at ATP, viewing this video and commenting. Sounds like you have a good plan. I can tell you from firsthand experience my monthly rent is about $235 for a 60+ sqm two story townhome 45 minutes south of Cebu. Out of the city but not that far out. Looking at the latest data for Manila, you can rent an 85 sqm furnished accommodation in expensive area for 90,000 peso and a 85 sqm furnished accommodation in a normal area for 44,000 peso. Obviously the sky’s the limit and higher price points may be found in Makati and Quezon City. I put a link in the description box with this and more information on Manila for your review. They studied with the help of financial assistance and loans. They are all very focused in on their dreams , and we’re so thankful about that. America is really a land of opportunity especially for young people, but Philippines is haven for retirement. Just my opinion. Thanks for promoting our country, inspite of the many flaws , especially people running our government. Though you mention the 3 regions, your average pricing appears to be only where you are living. Everywhere else is much higher for housing, utilities and wifi. And im not talk about living extreme. IMO, your comment saying the Philippines is 70% cheaper is not correct. Just in the last 2 years, prices have risen dramatically across the board. Evey day the exchange rate changes making it more expensive when the peso is stronger against the dollar. Gas you show is about P10-P15 pesos more in Metro-Manila. Again, pointing towards what it probably costs where you live, not in the other regions you mention. I would warn readers that its vital to do your own research to get a more accurate cost analysis of the area you intend to live so that your not shocked when you come. A good budget is vital both for current and future living. Dont fall back on credit cards, rely on cash you have.

Regarding the “70% cheaper” statement, from my humble experience I do find this to be true and accurate as I used to pay $450 - $500 US in Thailand for rent where as here I’m paying about $230 US, 50% less. My water bill here is 60% less than Thailand. A new 2023 Honda ADV 160 in America is $4,349 where as I bought my new Honda ADV 160 in June for $2,896, a 35% cost savings. I could go on and on but let’s just agree to disagree. 🙂🙂 And as you point out it is very important for someone to do their due diligence and fact finding before committing to an overseas retirement. As well as stay away from the credit cards. Cash is King!! Please subscribe to ATP if you have not already for future information like this. Your comment is much appreciated and insightful. Thanks and have a great day. 🙂🙂

I'll be 66 1/2 when I "semi-retire" in Davao City 4/2024, and my 13,000,000 Pesos in savings, no debt and 280,000 Pesos in monthly income will allow me to live VERY nicely on a 100,000 Pesos monthly budget and still save 180,000 Pesos every month. I priced a top tier Pacific Cross private health plan, with $250,000 U.S. coverage, no deductibles and pays 90% of cost for only $2,380 U.S. yearly, and though I have no health problems, I like to be prepared for if/when they might occur. I'll rent a nice, high rise condo, I won't drive (just use taxis), and as I don't drink, eat much, or do anything else foolish, wasteful or unhealthy I'll enjoy my life in P.I. in freedom and prosperity. I'm not going to P.I. to "find a Filipina", but If I come across one who has "potential" I might give it a go.

It's quite simple. Come here with money. Buy property. Invest. My Filipina wife and I own three residential and three commercial properties - obviously, as a foreigner I cannot own land, but we have been together for 8 years and have a family so I doubt if she's going to shaft me. All of our properties have increased significantly in value, primarily due to location (Covid led to an exodus from Manila, with many people relocating to our locale, around 90 minutes from the capital). In addition we get a very decent passive income through rentals and commercial interests and investments. We came here from Hong Kong four years ago, where the cost of living is at least five times that it is here. My wife persuaded me to retire early. I did and do not regret it.

Good day Orangeguy and thanks for looking at ATP, viewing this video, and providing your comment. Health care might be one of the most important factors for a retiree to consider when thinking about moving over seas. The older we get it seems the Health Insurance companies think we get richer as we get older as the premiums increase to a point for some that is unafforadble and for others who are no longer insurable. For some who are fortunate enough, self insurance is an option. In my opinion, we should never "regret" a decision that we dreamed about for many years of our adult life living in a foreign land and enjoy the memories we created and accept the new challenges of how to deal with aging. Please subscribe to ATP to receive more information like this in the future. Again, thanks for your comment and hope this finds you well. Have a great day. 🙂🙂

You can live well on that budget. I’ve never spent more than $2k a month in Cebu and that includes domestic travel, eating out 3 nights a week, health insurance, storage unit in US, and all food, housing, entertainment, and transportation costs. Now there are startup costs when you arrive and that can be US$10-20k and I would have an emergency fund of $20k US.

CAN FOREIGNERS BECOME CITIZENS OF THE PHILIPPINES? - ALBURO LAW Many foreigners do purchase "properties" in the Philippines such as condos or townhomes and have their names on the real estate contracts. What is not allowed is their name on real estate titles or real estate deeds or owning the physical land.
