2023 Nissan Frontier vs. Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, and Chevy Colorado: Which One is Right for You?

I think the Nissan is a far better value for the price of comparable vehicles. Granted Toyota has a better resale market but I plan to drive all of the value out of mine. I have had my Frontier since October and have thoroughly enjoyed the 11k miles driven.

Well sadly I just had to park my 2008 Crew Cab 4X4 Frontier as it's finally blown a head gasket that I don't think I'll be able to repair. I guess since it has 416,000 miles on it I'll give it a pass. It's a little sad because I really love the truck. But on the bright side I'm now looking for another one just like it to buy with maybe 100 thou or less and I'll try to get this next one to a million miles.

I’ve been a mechanic for over 20 years I worked service at Nissan and I’ve worked on Nissan and Toyota for many years before working at Nissan dealerships. Nissan has generally made a tougher engine and drive train, better paint quality and protection from rust than Toyota. So I really wish people would stop continuing the roomer that Toyota is so reliable and Nissan is questionable. Nissan makes some of the longest lasting vehicles on road. My current I’ve had 22 years a 2001 Xterra 3.3L v6 I have 436k miles on it. It’s never broken down on us. So stop the questions about Nissan reliability. People who’ve owned them know. I had many come into the shop with over 300k on original engine and transmission.

Love to hear this. I got my first Nissan back in 2003 and since then I've probably had 12 or 13 others and they've all be essentially bullet proof with very little if anything in the way of issues. That's part of why I stuck with the new Frontier over the other competitors is that they're keeping it simple and reliable.

The rims being premium are very Cheesy , Fake Beadlocks Ill pass on that I don't do Fake anything , I test drove it and its actually really solid I really liked it but I ended up going with a Canyon AT4X still waiting for it to come, I wanted more Tech and a front Locker along with more clearance. I find myself off road allot and the side steps are also a NO NO if you want to be more serious off road they interfere with clearance I would rather a slider , Its a nice truck until you actually think about it and do your homework unless your just branded Nissan , also the cutouts at the front tires are Painted opposed to the cutouts on the ZR2/Canyon they are black plastic not painted , I feel like your just asking for it with the Frontier with the cutouts being painted like that. I like the analog gauge cluster but the info screen in the middle is to small , I also prefer physical buttons, I did notice the steering was not normal to me but I didn't put to much thought into what was bothering me about it , I think you would get used to it I wouldn't say its horrible but that its just different. I think Nissan will have a tough time when the 24 Tacos, 24 Colorado/canyons, 24 Rangers are all out in force but for now you can go the a Nissan dealer and get one, they have 4 on the lot near me. It did seem to me that I had a feeling that the truck needed an update but then you realize its a new truck.

  • @AllThingsOverlanding

    @AllThingsOverlanding

    Жыл бұрын

Agreed on the fake beadlocks. Those are dumb. I definitely think that when the new Taco and Colorado come out, Nissan'll lose some market share. I bought the Nissan because it was about $5-7K less than a TRD Pro Tacoma and I'm sure the 2024's will be highly in demand, meaning mark ups and scarcity of availability. I've had a couple of Chevy's in my life and I think the new Colorado's are cool, but after all the serious issues I had with my Chevy's and all the people I know with Chevy's with serious engine, transmission, and other problems, I would lease one, but I wouldn't buy one. I bought the Nissan because I plan to keep it for 10-12 years with minimal maintenance. I knew from the start it would take a little suspension lift, some bigger tires, and some small mods to get it where I want it, but I favored the reliability over the OEM mods in exchange for some modification. But that's just me! Doesn't mean it's the only way.

We had started an Overland Flatbed Expedition Build on our F350 V10 right before covid. When gas prices rocketed we switched direction. We started looking at the mid size market. The used Nissan Frontier Pro-4x was our first choice based on bang for your buck. As much as our mechanic insisted we look at other options. We had never considered the Ford Ranger until spoke with an owner who loved his. Before I knew it I was on the hunt. We choose the Ranger (2019 FX4) over other trucks because it has the highest, towing, payload, mpg and head room (over all ergonomically more space). As a work truck/Overland Rig this was the best choice for our build. The 2.3 turbo engine is a complete blast to drive. Congratulations on the 2023 Frontier. Great to see you staying with a truck which definitely offers a lot more then the dated 2024 Toyota Tacoma. Like you said a simple but large V6 should be a safe and long term power house. If I could do it all again today and money was no object. 2024 Ford Ranger RAPTOR. 😊 Mark (& Teresa) Hampstead Maryland Ford Ranger - GFC Camper V2 #1919

Man this video was a huge help. I did so so so so much research on what my next truck was going to be. Let me just say it's been a journey, my family and I have primarily always been Subaru and Toyota people. The Taco just doesn't seem like what I really want to be in. I currently drive a 2010 Tundra, (found out later way too big for my liking). Up to this point I had narrowed it down to Maverick and Frontier. Now that I know a bit more about the Ford engine issues this video just reinforces the idea the Frontier just looks like my next purchase. So thank you. The only thing that gives me pause is the fact that I probably will never go off-roading or overlanding. I mean I would love to, but not a reality. This is why I thought about the Maverick, plenty of truck for the day to day and the occasional tow and haul. At the end of the day it comes down to what I really like the look and feel of, I can't wait to test drive this Frontier. Hopefully I can get in one. Dealerships around me are offering them below MSRP, fingers crossed.

  • @AllThingsOverlanding

So glad it was helpful! I actually had a Maverick on order for over a year and by the time it finally came, I had read a lot of horror stories online and decided for a few bucks more, the Frontier was really what I wanted (plus I'm a Nissan person, so that made the most sense to me). I still think the Mavericks are great trucks and they'll definitely beat out the Frontier from a fuel efficiency standpoint, but my concern is spending this much money on something that I plan to keep for 10+ years. I've always had really good experiences with my Nissans and had and heard some not so great stories of Ford. Again, no knocks there as there are tons of people putting hundreds of thousands of miles on them, but in my opinion, you're more likely to get more miles out of a Nissan with less maintenance and/or issues. Whatever you end up with, I'm sure you'll love it. Good luck!

I think it's great looking and I like that manufacturers are moving more towards giving us pre-built out vehicles that you can buy and take overlanding without modification just from an ease and reliability stand point. I also really like the idea of a hybrid powertrain as it just gives us more range to get out and explore. I only see 3 downsides: the turbo 4 worries me from a reliability and maintenance standpoint, the price, and the fact that EVERYONE will buy one, haha.

I currently own a 2019 4Runner that is lifted and great off-road. I want a mid-size pickup for a daily commuter and weekend overlander. I was going to go with the Taco, then discovered the Frontier. Loved Nissans back in the 90's, but they turned to crap. Hearing good things about the 3rd gen Frontier, and would pick one over the Tacoma. But then the 2024 Tacoma was announced. I get 16 mpg with the 4Runner and not enough power on 33's. I mean, call me biased, but I've had an 05 Xterra, an 08 Frontier, and now the 2023 and they've all been pretty great to me. I've had some problems with my 08 but all the problems stem from the previous owner doing the timing chain guides wrong, which caused a number of problems with the cats, injectors, etc. Other than that though, they're pretty bullet proof and if buying used, you can get a steal on a Frontier versus a used Tacoma. I keep buying them and I'm pretty easy to piss off, regarding vehicle reliability so I'd say they're pretty good for the money.

But I'm going to get a new frontier because it's the only mid-size besides the gladiator that has the NA engine. All of the four-cylinder turbos are going to have problems, including the toyota. I've never liked the looks of the Toyota tacomas and the new one is no exception. In spite of a lot of the reviewers saying the frontier already looks dated, I think it's a great design. And the Tacoma may be cool, but availability will be slim, for at least 6 months, maybe even a year, judging by tundra availability. And same as Colorado, no discounts Available, I'm sure. But... I've heard a few people complain about the steering. I personally haven't had any trouble with it and my wife does have a Honda Pilot, so I dfeinitely know what you mean by the steering being a big heavier and less augmented, but never had any problems driving the truck or staying in a lane.

True. I probably only use half of the modern features on our pilot. Considering my last truck was a long bed no cab, f150 from 1995, the Frontier is going to feel like a truck from the future to me.

all the same reasons i had when i bought mine in feb. I seen all of these other trucks. even the new taco i seen some pre images of in march. the tacos are nice i drove one for a few weeks from the local rental place. It was not comfortable to me. the sticker is way over priced yea they hold there value i agree. But you get the same value in the nissan, for quite a bit less. So far i have towed a 16 foot flat bed loaded with steel close to cap of the trailer. I could not even tell it was behind me. This frontier tows as well as the 2018 chevy 1500 i traded in for it. The chevy was factory lifted procomp with over loads and magna ride in the front. it was a nice Truck. it spent more time in the shop then in my drive way.. at one point they dealer had it 9 months trying to get a rear bearing for it in 22 i put over 7k mileage on the loaner lol. Any ways if you have any considerations i would say do what i did go rent one and drive it a few days you will know soon after that if you like it. Cheers.

During COVID, I bought a 2019 PRO-4X in April of 2020 for around $30K - the truck deal of a lifetime! The Ford 4 cyl. eco-bost is only direct injected which leads to carbon build-up and poor engine design has led to head gasket problems. Ford also has had valve failures in their V6's. The best MPG from a Frontier was the 2020 model (spring of 2020) - the new power-train with the old, more aerodynamic body style. Toyota Tacoma frames have to be reinforced to put 35's on them and their rear differential isn't as stout as the Dana 44 on the Pro-4X. Rear disk brakes are another + for the Nissan. Speculation is that all these discrepancies will be addressed in the next gen Tacoma

@@onefastcyclist I'm leaning towards the RC Killa lift from All Dogs Offroad. With the newness of the truck and already having the Bilsteins on it, I feel kind of silly revamping/replacing the full suspension. Still don't want to go with a spacer lift, so I'm feeling like the RC Killa is a good middle ground that takes advantage of some of the good stuff I already have while getting me lifted a bit. Then in a few years when stuff starts to wear out, I'll look at their Fox, full replacement, long travel option probably as an upgrade/replacement.

@@AllThingsOverlanding A 2" lift is really the sweet spot in these trucks and even upgraded tires like 265/75r16 BFG KO2's or General Grabbers (E load rated) only weigh about 53lbs.(The stock Hankook's are good till you put a rock through them). I moved my spare to the bed for ease of access. Add a leafs very, but usually they last about a year with hard off-road use before the over-stressed stock springs begin to sag - hopefully, you'll have better luck. The factory 4600 shocks should last that long too.The next set should include a full rear spring pack. The new Colorado does not offer a diesel engine. You can only get it with crew cab (extended cab not available, which is a deal breaker for me). I'll also pick a NA V6 over a turbo engine any day of the week. My '97 S10 with the V6 has alot of torque low in the RPM band. Perfect truck engine, with decent fuel economy.

I will say one thing about Ford as a former motorsports engineer Ford knows how to make power and they know how to do it cheaply at the cost of rushing something to market that isn’t fully R&D Done and then they fix it with recalls however it surprises me that the bronco sport and the maverick are having any problems as they are based on the European focus Platform and drivetrain which is tried and true in Europe.

  • @AllThingsOverlanding

For sure. The Explorer ST, the Focus RS, lots of examples of their FI engines making power with tons of potential. I think they have some exciting options out there. I waited for over a year for my Maverick order to come to fruition and during that time, I was on all the FB groups for Maverick owners and saw a ton of problems with them. Of course, you get that in any of those groups so while there may have been numerous problems, there were also even more people who didn't experience them. The way I've always looked at it is a percentage game. I've just always had good luck with Nissans and, anecdotally, had bad luck with most of the domestics I've owned. Then there are friends and neighbors who've had euros and other domestics and you just see and hear of issues with those more often than you do with the Japanese makes and over time, that has created a definite influence on what I buy (especially to keep). Now, if I was leasing this vehicle, I'd probably have had a lot harder time choosing. :D

It was a se 2008 2wd already high mileage when i got it beaten up and i beat it up even more 😂 taking it off road with the boys and it lasted 3yrs because a car accident. It was my fault so can't avoid it then after that i got another frontier this time 2015 sv with 4wd and beat the hell out of it but i take care of it still, keeping it clean.

The only thing I have had to replace on it was a starter. It also has similar HP numbers to the outgoing generations of midsize trucks. With a cam and valve Springs it will be over The HP numbers of the newer gen trucks and close on torque. I know the interior is crap but it’s GM. The truck is paid for and gets 20mpg on the high way. As much as I love the new trucks coming out they are just not doable for me.

Xterras are great. If you look at an optioned out Tacoma (new) that is comparable to the Frontier, it's actually a few grand more expensive. Depends on what you consider "comparable" I suppose, but basically a TRD Pro in my opinion. If you went TRD Offroad without skids or LED headlights, you're right, it's around $37K but you're giving up quite a bit over the Frontier. If you go TRD Pro, they start at $47K. Mainly though, I'm just a Nissan person and I think the current gen Tacomas, while great trucks, are boring and outdated. The new 2024 looks interesting but by the time it's actually readily available, it'll be a couple of years and for a while, they'll be asking over MSRP. Who knows though, just depends on what you want!

Honestly, that's totally up to you. I didn't purchase one because I plan to modify the vehicle pretty heavily and figured they would use anything to get out of paying for potential warranty repairs. I'm also hopeful/somewhat confident that if anything is going to go wrong, it's going to happen within the first few years. Almost 11K miles now and no problems so far. If you aren't at all mechanically inclined and aren't planning to modify the vehicle, it might make sense to get the extended warranty, but I just plan to deal with anything that comes up on my own, if I ever even have any problems. These trucks are pretty basic and easy to work on.
